I grew up in Brunei and went to a few car auctions in the early-mid 2000's. There had been various auctions, not just of cars, but other goods too,. There were cars that had been left out exposed to the elements for years in a large lot, including various models of super cars. I recall seeing a Ferrari F40 that was in really poor condition with sun-bleached paint, cracked dashboard and mold in the interior. Some had been at least stored under cover, so weren't too badly damaged. When walking around one lot I came across a rotting hovercraft and what appeared to be a replica of the car from Knight Rider, complete with matching interior. I know a few people that bought cars, including a basically unused Jaguar XJS and a 1990's Range Rover that was extremely high-spec and must've been part of a custom order. The latter had incredibly low mileage, but was dirty and filled with sand inside. According to the people at the auction, it had been taken out to a beach and used like a dune-buggy for an afternoon one day and then just abandoned until retrieved by the staff. The cars were sold on the condition that they couldn't be exported from Brunei, but most expatriates that bought cars simply drove over the border into Malaysia and arranged export from either Miri or Kota Kinabalu.

My uncle worked as Prince Jefri’s London fixer. He managed his house and the staff there. Just in case he decided he wanted to visit London for a few days. The furniture in the house was renewed every so often. My uncle would occasionally give us some of the furniture that was being disposed of. So my working class family home in North England was just filled with ridiculously valuable rich dude furniture all the time. £20000 chairs and desks would just be rotated out for new ones. I mean, I've done way too much research on this collection and it's literally unfathomable. Buying one of those cars for the average person is an enormous sum of money, and they just bought them like hot cakes. The fact that they were literally able to have manufacturers design and develop cars specifically for them that didn't exist yet is unreal, especially with companies like Ferrari. They had a Bentley SUV decades before Bentley technically even made an SUV. The fact that they bought over fifty of the exact same car is nuts. I'd give so much to be able to spend even such a short amount of time in those garages and it's sad that they are decaying and just simply abandoned like that. Not that I condone this spending. I love cars and if I had crazy money I'd probably buy more cars than I technically need, but buying 75 of the exact same Rolls-Royce is ludicrous. There are people in economic crisis and you just keep buying millions of dollars worth of cars like mad. Sad to see. Disappointing that incredible and rare cars like the F1 and the EB110 and especially those special editions made exclusively for them are never shown to the public and shared with the people who dream of owning cars like that someday, and especially that they are now just rotting in some warehouses.
@exoticsontheroad33913 жыл бұрын
Completely agree with you. Saw an F50 few years ago and it was awesome and the fact that this guy has so many duplicates of extremely rare cars is sad like if hes never going to drive them should at least let people see these cars. Because he has 50+ of the same model for some cars it shows hes not a car enthusiast but more like a hoarder. like If hes never going to drive them whats the point in having them he isn't keeping them for investments because some are beyond repair.

They singlehandedly kept Rolls Royce and Bentley (and i believe Lambo too) afloat during the 90s. Their story is fascinating (for the wrong reasons). For someone who loves cars, a lot of it reads like a horror story. Jeffri was done in for corruption charges or something along the lines so that is why his collection was allowed to be viewed by outsiders. Due to those charges he also is no longer allowed to purchase the latest cars and half of them are literally rotting away in that storage facility (some high (low?)lights include turning 300 S600s into a reef). That's why his collection appears to have stopped at 90's Need For Speed Nirvana. The Sultan himself apparently is still adding to his collection and his collection has rarely been seen by outsiders. So if he's still doing it, I wonder how many secret Chirons, Koenigseggs and Paganis he has. And apparently, they are so inbred that you could add up all their IQ together (according to a diplomat who had frequent dealings with them) and it still wouldn't equal a normal person. Edit: I read a ton of articles (and a few books) and spoke to a few people about 7 years ago regarding the duo (and their spawn), their story is a cautionary tale in wanton excess. Some cars did escape from prison however; one of, to explain their "awesome" taste, would be a grey F40 which was finished with a full Testarossa interior. So all that weight reduction, completely wasted. And IIRC Hakeem hates driving manual or something like that, so that's why they got Prodrive (I thought it was Williams too...) to develop the semi-manual shift. 🥴

Amazing what money does to a man that has more of it than what he knows what to do with it. Something suffers at the end of the day and these cars were that. Makes me glad that my almost 200k dodge truck has seen a good life to this point and will have always done more vehicle things than some cars with a million times more.

If you think these cars suffered, you are severely overlooking the people of Brunei, who were undoubtedly oppressed and neglected, and are just as materialistic. Yeah, I know this is a video centric on the car collection, but I can assure you, "at the end of the day", the cars did not suffer.

It was actually his brother who owned a lot of the outrageous things including the Luxury Yacht named "Tits" . The sultan's brother Prince Jefri once allegedly kept a paid harem of up to 40 women, and was accused of embezzling $14.8 billion. He entertained women on his luxury yacht called “Tits” which had lifeboat tenders named “Nipple 1” and “Nipple 2”.

I'm from Brunei and even I'm sad they just keep them there and they don't even drive them. The sultan of Brunei always drives his G-Wagon but if I were him I'd drive all of them.

@@raehilangI guess potholes are a common thing in Brunei too? In Malaysia, if a minister crashes his bike because of a pothole & gets minor injury, they'll fix it the day after. If a school kid crashes his bike because of a pothole & gets serious head injury, they'll probably never fix it.

I worked and lived in Brunei Darussalam for 2 years (2011-2013) and got to meet him and his brother during Hari Raya, at the Palace. These cars were just a scratch on the shit he had. His Palace "Istana" is over 1,700 rooms and he also has multiple Jets including a 747, that he Pilot's, plus a couple of Blackhawks, the list goes on, keeps a tight leash on the Bruneians though.
