Hi Rachel, Doug and Dorry Eldon here. We're the ones who wrote and produced Lyrical Life Science and Lyrical Earth Science. I'm so glad to see you smile and laugh when you mention it cause that's what we did as we wrote them! Bobby Horton, was the master musician (PBS musician, historical music, etc.) who made it so fun--and good-- that it won awards. He laughed all the way too. We'd write a song, send it to him, then he'd call and we'd laugh about his production ideas. Yep, make them silly and get rid of all that fear towards learning scientific vocabulary. It still tickles us and we continue to be amazed at the joy we experienced in making these. Thank you for enjoying them too! You get the essence of what they are all about! Thank you joyfully, Dorry Eldon

The "How to Behave and Why" Gotta love it! I need to get the Book of Virtues. Crazy that I don't have that one. Those are great history books. We have a book of poetry, but don't read it enough. Love Robert Louis Stevenson. His cottage is near where I live.

I think starting out by just reading poetry and taking a few moment to chat about...hmmm, what does that mean? What was that about? Is a great start with poetry with young kids. I actually love Shel Silverstein poems for young kids. :)

I'll have to look into Lyrical Life Science! LOL. When you said protozoa I just thought of Zenon Girl of the 21st Century. These are really great recommendations. I think every home should have a Treasury of Classic Children's Stories, whether fairy tales or Aesop's fables or both combined. Thanks for sharing.

Those treasuries packed full of the classic tales are a great resource, too! Lyrical Life Science--the great thing is that the songs are available on KZbin now. They are very camp-y, on purpose, but they make me smile, and I legitimately learned a lot of scientific vocabulary from those songs, haha!

Maps are definitely really handy, but I prefer maps on the wall--you're right, though, sometimes books of maps could come in handy. I'm a little weird in that I'm not a big fan of the "lift the flap" books, but I know lots of families swear by them! :)

A lot or all of their songs are on KZbin now! Very camp-y, but astonishingly memorable, they make me laugh...and I definitely know scientific vocabulary words that I'm sure I would never have remembered to this day if not for the lyrics of those songs.

We have books of Christian vertues!!! Sorry I can’t spell. We love horrible history books. We don’t use a history curriculum and our umbrella school says that’s ok. History is awesome to teach y not to do or accept stuff. We teach history in other subjects. My daughter is watching this wiv me and she wants to learn poetry so I’ve told her we will get a book of Poems. We teach songwriting as we feel they learn enough in language arts and we don’t want to bore them and we want them to learn songwriting as well. My daughter says every homeschool wiv preteens need horrible history books.

Book collections of poems are a fantastic way to get started with poetry! I really like the books that include poems by a variety of authors so that if you find one you like, you can research and see if that author has more poetry that you can read and learn about! :)
