Get yourself a used Workstation that uses LGA 1366 CPU sockets and you can build a great system based on this processor for even less. I scored an HP z600 that was off lease for $199 USD shipped which already had an x5650 in the first CPU slot and a Quadro 4000 GPU. I found a matching CPU for the second slot and another 3 sticks of ECC ram for $30 each and now for $260 total, my system has dual X5650s and 48 GB of DDR3 ECC ram.

I'm still rocking an i7-980X, an X58 6-core, 12-thread processor on the 1366 socket, and I've also got mine running at 4.0 GHz. From what I understand, our chips are pretty much identical except that the 980X runs higher clocked out of the box and has an unlocked multiplier. It's amazing how this seven-year-old CPU is still kicking ass right up there with the 5820k. I can't believe how my PC has lasted nearly a decade and is still going strong.

GTA on mix of medium and high settings runs about 50 to 70 fps at 1080p. Dirt 3 at over 90fps at ultra. Asseta Corsa is over 90fps ultra. DS3 solid steady 60fps at medium settings. 45 to 60 at ultra. Need for Speed Shift ultra at over 100fps. Haven't tried other games as i don't have them. Sadly my obs recording (using same system) didn't really come out smooth xD cause gta5 runs this little machine pretty hard.

yeah, I almost built a dual xeon system because I found some chips for dirt cheap. Can't remember the socket but I did look at the 1366 as well. The motherboard I could find for an affordable price..... wouldn't fit in any server cases because it was a proprietary supermicro mb size. I currently have my 3570k acting as a quasie server in a desktop case with 4x hdd's and storage spaces. I'm bouncing around the idea of getting a 7700k and z270 when it comes out in the next few month's and making my 5820k into a server/backup game machine and the 3570k will be another backup machine. Or I might just put my 5820k back together and be done with it. At any rate I hope to have a lan room in my basement and extra gaming machines is good so who knows.

Just out of curiosity, what form factor is the MoBo for that Xeon platform? Also, did you have to use a specialized PSU and RAM? I seem to recall reading a few articles saying that server boards don't use the standard ATX power supply 24-pin connector, but I could be wrong. And I know that they can use ECC RAM, but I'm not sure if that's a requirement. I was actually thinking about buying some old server parts to build a PC to host a teamspeak server, a game server, and maybe also to use as a NAS file server. I was able to find a decently priced motherboards and pair of CPUs, but the motherboard was E-ATX form factor, and finding an E-ATX case for cheap was nearly impossible.
@abdullahredwan45858 жыл бұрын

I love it when you not only test out "reasonable" sollutions, but push older components and compare them against newer stuff to see if they are able to stand their ground. I've been commenting for you to cover these for ages! Thanks so much, the X5650 is a beast! Only thing is I guess you not see my comments, instead of paying 150£ for a motherboard, you can pay just 40-80£ for a used Dell Precision T3500, which comes with a PSU, case, ram, some GPU, and more! It's an entire PC, all you have to do is replace the CPU with the X5650 and add a decent GPU! What's more is the motherboard in the T3500 has triple channel slots, which really increases performance, even without an overclock. It supports ECC memory too, which is about £20 cheaper than normal DDR3 :) The only real downside of using a T3500 for the X5650 is that it's harder to overclock.

I am jealous, you got very good deal!! T3500 is very nice computer, very good build quality and well made. Motherboards in these support even triple channel 8GB of ECC memory is great! Add a little more for triple channel and get huge performance increase. E5520 is decent CPU, but your machine is very future proof as you can easily & cheaply upgrade to X5650 and get incredible performance! Quadro NVS 450 is pretty decent low end video card, great for old games, but your machine can be upgrade later to something like a GTX1070, and that will still a bottleneck to a X5650! All that you get for $50! I want to be you right now

GTX 760 for €55 is very good deal also! Nice find. The issue is that you did not really need a new PSU, for the dual six pins, the stock PSU is more than enough for the 760, all you needed was a €2 Sata to 6 pin, so you can have both for the card.

lock the multiplier at max speed and set the base clock something higher then 100 in BIOS. You need to have a decent board to do this. the max turbo clock of the xeon mentioned in the video above, for example, has a max turbo multiplier of 33. clock speed is multiplier times base clock. so lets say you set the base clock to 120. 120 X 33 = 3960, so 3.96 ghz.

go for skylake, from there you can go to kaby lake you aren't going to use the potential of a server CPU and its huge RAM support, servers use multithreads and multicores but games and some programs require good performance on single core, and with rendering and other stuff, the newer the cpu the more effective sets (algorythms) it has which will not only lower the demand on the CPU, but will also make it more efficient i.e. more computed in less time in less load

@@joeonyt196 Perhaps, but it still stands true that turning graphics down makes for pushing the CPU side of things harder than the GPU, with the reduced load and presumably frametime on the GPU end, the CPU has less downtime between frames. Sure, the 6500 is a decent CPU. Kind of missing the point of the video though. The x5650 (stock clock) will actually best your 6500 by a small margin in anything that is optimized for multithreading and can be had for 45.00. I just did a quick search and found a compatible motherboard for it for 54.00. Another 60.00 on 24gb of ram and for less than just your CPU goes for used (159.00 vs 165.00), you have a superior (minus a few modern motherboard features) foundation for a gaming rig. Throw all that saved money into getting a tier or two better GPU than you would have otherwise and it's making a lot of sense now. You may do even better picking up older workstations like the dell T3500/T5500/T7500 and HP Z400/Z600/Z800 (some of which support dual processors) as you can get some or all of the parts you want already installed including a high watt PSU easily capable of handling a Pascal GPU or two. Of course the cases aren't as flashy as a modern gaming case.

This video is MISS LEADING, DO NOT BELIEVE IT. Of course you gonna see the same results LOL. You made a GPU test not a CPU test, unless the game use enough ram to get off the insane 6gb ram your 1060 graphic card have, you will HARDLY see any difference. Do some benchmarks, a 4 cores I7 6700K would do about 3 the score your lame Xeon do. And don't get it wrong. Xeon proccesors are LAME for gaming, because they are not made for them, they are made purely for calculation of super extended commends for servers, but when it comes to multi tasking, which are most notable at high end games and online games, even low graphic games such as CS GO, an i7 would procces everything twice as fast. And even though you might not see that in a major FPS incrase, FPS is CLEARLY not everything. And that's without even mentioning DDR4 vs your so called out of date DDR3. Realize that the most simple DDR4 is actually FASTER than your stock Xeon clock.

Well, it is on paper a 32nm, 6 physical cores, 12 threads alternative to the i7 5820K. It is all in all the older technology that can't compete with Z170 chips. But the X5650 is still much raw power and I got myself an X5650 processor and a GTX1070 and I play on 1080p ultra up to 100+ fps on every game. For the performance per dollar, I recommend this solution if you want cheap high end gaming. I did it myself and love it. You get the performance you need, especially for gaming. Also, for higher resolutions, this solution is quite the way to go to. An GTX 1080ti or 1070 SLI will give me the 1440p 144fps Gaming experience I am working on. By the way I'm running an ASUS X58 Sabertooth with the Xeon Overclocked to 3.9 Ghz and got all the parts for 200€. It is worth it.

great video. however i would recommend lowering your settings when benchmarking cpus against each other. ryzen Vs Intel at 2k and 4k were very close in the benchmarks because the GPU was bottlenecking. at 1080p you saw a bigger difference. i would have run your game benchmarks at 720p as well as 1080 to reduce the GPU bottleneck to give a more accurate CPU assesment . anyway you're making great videos as always. keep doing it!!!

Btw to the people saying " You don't need 6 cores for gaming, don't do gaming benchmarks do rendering stuff " no, you don't NEED 6 core for gaming but keep in mind todays games most of them fully utilize all 4 cores, games like GTA for example take 100% utilization on my i5 6500 easy, other games are close behind at 70%ish, so having 2 extra cores is good, I feel like 6 cores is the new sweet spot these days, plenty for gaming, plenty for light/medium rendering or editing work loads, and 6 cores can even still overclock pretty nicely.

I use this CPU since the beginning of this year. I upgraded from a first Gen i7 920 to the x5650. So I already had the motherboard, 24GB of RAM and a decent cooler (Mugen 2). Overclocking on this board was easy, the CPU is currently running at 3,8 GHz (190x20) and that's not even pushing it, temperatures are quite moderate even after hours of stress tests.
@RRCsteve7 жыл бұрын
So along these lines... I've been using a LGA1366 motherboard since 2010 for my rig. Instead of getting an entirely whole new PC, I bought a W3690 (faster than the X5650) for about $200 on ebay. Overclocked stable from 3.46GHz to 4.2GHz. Based on Passmark, it was right up there with a 4770K, which looks to have been $400 when new, not including all the new RAM and a new mobo along with it. The used X5650 suggestion is much more cost focused and provides much more processing power per dollar.

Nice reminder for people who never dealt with server gear, remember that you will probably have to buy ECC RAM, though. It's not that expensive, but if you are planning on doing this you might want to add that to the shopping list to estimate the price of the build (still cheaper than a high end i7).

There are not insignificant scheduling and boost differences in the two processors. While consumer grade intel processors try to maintain consistent performance for extended heavy workloads, server grade processors, especially Intel server processors, Burst™. :P What I mean is, the processor will continuously kick the turbo on and off to squeeze extra performance out over extended workloads to try to get the most done as possible in the shortest time as possible, but this can be detrimental to frame times in gaming. I recommend turning off turbo on xeons if you are using it as a desktop, and instead settle on a specific constant overclock.
@SobiesawChabaz8 жыл бұрын
I'm running a X5450 on a modded 775 motherboard right now (MSI 7360). It was capable of running Witcher 3 in 1080p on high/ultra settings at 30+ fps (up to 50-55 in less taxing areas) and the CPU usage wasn't even jumping past 55-60% on any of the cores. And it's not even overclocked because these things are goddamn hot and require beefy cooling. It does go up to 3.8 GHz on a P5Q Pro Turbo but again, good cooling required. Xeons are seriously amazing CPUs that businesses just throw away. You may be missing features though, don't forget. DDR3, possibly no USB 3 or SATA 3 (depending how far back you're going) etc. If you're only looking to build a gaming rig, even modding a good 775 board with a X54 series Xeon will be just fine.
@operator80148 жыл бұрын
I think it's also worth mentioning that if you know where to look, you can get a TON of ECC DDR3 RAM for 1/4 the price of consumer grade RAM. Last DDR3 server I built, I put in 128GB @1333Mhz for $260. For a consumer setup, you'd be looking at what, $2,000 for that?

Hey RandomGaminginHD. Like you, I heard about this CPU several months ago. My daily driver was a Core i7 930 on an EVGA FTW3 X58 motherboard I bought brand new off amazon back in 2010 for $270. I figured, hey, I have a motherboard that supports the CPU, and for $48, it would be a great upgrade. I was able to overclock it to 3.95GHz stable on Air cooling. On RealBench and Cinebench, this CPU outperforms my i7 4790K. In the process of attempting to get a stable overclock, it fried my 250gb 850 EVO SSD. still waiting for warranty repair from Samsung. Good luck to people trying to find a decent motherboard for this CPU. they're really expensive on the used market. These mobos only have gen 1 PCIe and Sata II. my board however, has 2 SATA III connectors and 2 USB 3.0 ports - pretty hi-tech during that time. One drawback I found, the cpu/board takes a long time to POST.

I normally like watching these videos and I like this one too, but there are a few weird things I didn't like. First being that the X5650 only supports 288GB of RAM if it is ECC RAM, otherwise it will only support about 48GB of RAM. This is a minor point since you actually need an asston of DIMM slots on a motherboard to get close to 48GB of DDR3 RAM, but it is a point worth making. Second being that if your point is to stress the CPU, then turning up AA defeats the purpose. AA does not stress CPUs, it only stresses the video card. By enabling the most AA possible, you are limiting performance to the GTX 1060 3GB instead of the CPUs. I have to say again that I generally like these videos, and I actually have two Xeon X5667s (which I paid about $50 for both) in my desktop computer, so I totally support using these CPUs to game, but I feel like there was some misrepresentation in this video.

Since this is a 5000 series Xeon, you may be able to run it in dual processor mode if you can find an appropriate dual LGA1366 motherboard.

Very good video, just bought an X5650 for 50€ and a compatible motherboard for only 80€ (under 138$US atm). It is insane value considering that it even has 3770 level single core performance when at over 4 GHz. The board itself (MSI X58 Pro) can take a baseclock of slightly over 200, but the multi is locked at 20 under full load, though >4,6 GHz under low workloads make it even good for games. Thanks for your recommendation. Might return the X5650 and swap it with an 64€ X5670 for those two more steps of multi though. ^^

For the Motherboard, some workstations can be found for cheap, any Dell Precision T3500, HP Z400 or Lenovo S20 (Single Processor MoBo's) are great for these Xeons. Right now I got a Lenovo S20 for less than US$100 dollars, got the PC-Case, a Xeon W3565, 12GB RAM, Nvidia Cuadro 4000, 80+plus Gold Power Source, Card Reader, DVD Burner and a 500GB Mechanical Hard Drive. I have a spare X5675 CPU for it, can put it a GTX 1060 or a RX480/RX580, buy a USB 3.1 pcie and got me a killer machine for gaming, don't think I would need to upgrade in a couple of years, got a STEAM account and a huge backlog with games that doesn't need top tier GPU's. Heck i just finished Resident Evil 2RE on my low power PC (Huananzhi X58 with a xeon X5675, 32GB ECC DDR3 1366 RAM, Nvidia GTX 1050Ti 4GB and a Asus Xonar DX, played the game on Medium with low light effects 60+ fps and looked way better than on a PS4 - Xbox One.
