Thank You to Alice Hanks for making this film available. My only comment about this film is it really down plays the magic of the win of Hanks and of George Salih. Hanks was reported to have decided to retire from driving and came to the Speedway without a ride. The Salih 'lay down' chassis was without a driver or a sponsor. Most of the experts on pit row gave the car little chance. It had been Salih's plan to sell the car but their was little interest and he borrowed money to enter and run it. Finally Hanks was set as driver and Belond came on as sponsor after it qualified. Everything came together and it was a 'story book' win. Sam Hanks retired a winner. Salih brought his car back the next year with Jimmy Bryant as driver and won it's second '500'. Many lay down designs were built after Salih's win but none matched it's success. Before the start of the 1958 500 Sam Hanks was on the pre-race broadcast and was asked who he thought had the best car in that race. ' Wouldn't want any seat other than the one that Jimmy Bryant is in. The one I won in last year!'

Had the pleasure of meeting Alice Hanks. What a wonder and gorgeous woman! This was an excellent film and as the old saying goes, "they don't make 'em like this anymore"!

And this would be the last race without AJ Foyt until 1993. Holy crap. Lol

"Chiropractic Special" 😁 That remark aside, it is none less of unbelievable, the whole lot. I live in Germany and people like e.g. Fangio and Moss had also done magic at the wheel at that time. Still Indianapolis like shown here, with all its Aire must have been ... (cannot find an expression). Cheers.

Driving these monsters with 3:05 no give when hitting a wall at 160 plus w helmets designed for bike riders and absence of flame retardant suits.. The drivers had steel balls. Most died behind the wheel before retirement. Btw, Sam Hanks who won 1957 500 retired in victory lane.

@@johngaines5905 Thank you, so true. One can easily be mislead by the bodyshape and livery of these machines. Wasn't it in essence lying behind a screaming timebomb in a birdcage or on a steel rod filled with fuel. The dynamics working at the drivers are beyond my imagination. A singular world all that.

having grown up in Speedway I knew( I was 6) AJ Watson and his incredible family I might have as a young kid been in love with his oldest daughter a friend of my sister. I miss the old days. God bless that family for allowing me to pester them as a kid.

100,000 1957 dollars, his face on the most important trophy in racing and a pretty wife in the winner's circle....a pretty good day for Sam Hanks.

All that talk about the 1952 race and the lay-down engine in Vuky's car, and they never even mentioned the Cummins Diesel Special, which had a lay-down diesel engine and qualified on the pole. It was also the first car to run at the speedway with a turbocharged engine.

Just a reminder: If Sam Hanks can win the Indy 500 after all that trying, you too can get a girlfriend.

And if you're really lucky, she'll look like, and have a personality like, Alice Hanks.
