Taped live at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the 5th Dimension sing their hit single from 1967 (charting at 7 on the Billboard Hot 100). Their record of this song won a 1968 Grammy for Song of the Year and another Grammy for Record of the Year. Written by Jimmy Webb. They also sang "Monday, Monday" during this performance. The group's members are Ron Townson, Billy Davis Jr., Florence LaRue, Lamonte McLemore and Marilyn McCoo. Although they were frequent guests on the Sullivan show, this is the first time the group has been posted since the daily postings began three years ago. Thank you for this performance!

It's wonderful to see such a clear and vibrant live version of this wonderful 5D performance from The Ed Sullivan Show. A very ropey version of this footage overlaid with the original soundtrack has been available on You Tube for many years where it has been seen by over 3.2 million people, but to see it come to life like this is something truly to behold. All five members are simply dazzling and pristeen. You can tell they were riding the crest of a wave when they performed this magnificent Jimmy Webb song all those years ago. Simply iconic!

Outstanding! One of my favorites. Surprisingly it was not a Billboard #1 song. However, they swept the Grammy awards that year!
@garyleigh6876 Жыл бұрын
The album of the same name was a rip-roaring top ten Billboard success for many weeks, so many people who would have bought the single opted to buy the album instead. Also, it spent no less than 4 weeks in 7th position which is no mean feat (don't forget 5D were competing with the likes of The Beatles, Elvis and The Rolling Stones at the time!).

At a time with the U.S. needed an especially upbeat, breezy and well-paced tune to transport us--even for a few minutes--from the problems of the day (Vietnam, etc.), the 5th Dimension and their writers provided it in the form of Up, Up and Away. Great song and great performance as shown here.

For any music buffs out there, a little help regarding some cool info about The 5th Dimension. Is it true that Johnny Rivers, of SECRET AGENT MAN fame, was a producer for their early records?🤔
@hanno-erdmanntietz8424 Жыл бұрын
'Go Where You Wanna Go' was the first single that Johnny Rivers produced for them. He was also in charge of some other early releases (with Marc Gordon as co-producer), such as 'Up, Up & Away' and 'Another Day, Another Heartache'. Their very first single 'I'll Be Lovin' You Forever'/'Train, Keep On Movin' had been produced by Marc Gordon and Willie Hutchison. The Fifth Dimension also covered Johnny Rivers' huge 1966 hit 'Poor Side Of Town' (B-side and LP/album track).
@garyrasberryjr.552 Жыл бұрын
Yep. Motown turned them down after an audition, and Johnny signed them to his Soul City label. Johnny co-produced their debut LP, then the legendary Bones Howe took over for the next albums on Bell Records.

What I find interesting in this performance is that they have only three mics to share among them. Microphones and sound engineering must have been more expensive in those days (?) Editorial note: I was 11 years old on that day. I probably watched it on TV with my parents.
@cowsongs7 ай бұрын
Not just expensive, technologically out of reach. Live mix consoles just didn't have enough channels. Remember, they had to use up some channels to capture the orchestra. By 1968, I think they had 8-channel consoles, but think about trying to mic a whole orchestra and then a 5-person vocal group on only 8 channels! From looking at photos of them playing live in the mid 60s, they played live shows with much more limited equipment where they always had to share mics like this, so they had the routine down pat.
@davidcullen3827 ай бұрын
I know the two female singers were former beauty pageant contestants, but was one of the male vocalists a semi pro or minor league athlete, I believe a baseball player, but not sure. Either way, incredible group, then and now!!
@marveldella Жыл бұрын
The need to share 3 microphones among 5 singers added an extra layer to preparation and logistics for the performance. Yet the 5th Dimension handled that aspect rather well. I'm curious... Did Caesar's Palace 'sound system not have the ability to handle 5 microphones? Or is the answer one of practicality or safety? Would there have been distortion if the performers came too close to each other? Would 5 cords restrict mobility on stage?
@fivemile13 Жыл бұрын
I have seen many videos of this group, and they often share mics in this way. It might have been part of their choreography.

Couldn't the show's producers find them two more mics?
@cowsongs7 ай бұрын
In a word, "No". Having lots of separate channels like that in 1968 on live TV was a dream for the future. The orchestra probably had a lot of mics, all delicately placed so they would get the right balance from the different instruments and sections, all set up by trial and error in different locations and distances, all to be mixed down into only a few channels at best. That's one of the reasons the early Beatle performances had George and Paul or Paul and John sharing a mic. It was good for stage effect, sure, but it also cut down on mic channels.
