The new thinking basketball
@cnl1213Ай бұрын
The term "take a dunk" is already so rarely heard in basketball. It's almost a given that you make the dunk. Usually you dunk it or your dunk attempt gets blocked, there is really no in between. The ability to dunk is also, not holy grail, but gatekeeper in deeming who is athletic or not.
@penkima4923Ай бұрын
The average height in the NBA is 6'7". It's the default that they can dunk, so it's no gatekeeper deeming anything. If a 6'7 guy can't dunk, he's exceptionally unathletic.
@cnl1213Ай бұрын
@@penkima4923 I meant "gatekeeper" in terms of the general population that plays basketball. Yes, clearly if you are 6'7 and in the NBA you are expected to be able to dunk. There are also tiers to it. Not everybody is expected to dunk like Zach Lavine or Donovan Mitchell in a game. And clearly Patrick Williams can dunk too, just flubs it when in game speed and intensity and has to make 3 moves to setup a weird angle dunk. I would also like to point out that, if it is the case that he is "unathletic", he has gotta have some other outstanding skills to not only be on the team, but playing on the floor. I am sure there are a bunch of athletic 6'7 guys that are begging to be in his spot.

@AntColon27 күн бұрын
I remember Cam Reddish having similar issues when he was on the hawks, and we all know Cam can rise up. It's about selection at times, but with Pat I can tell he really isn't climbing the ladder alongside his poor takes. I think a good amount of these misses or blocks can be prevented by doing a layup or simply faking it before going up. To be fair he's often just on the perimeter so being in the dunkers spot his mind probably goes back to before the league when he was bigger and more athletic than anybody. The big problem is he has been in the league for almost 5 years now.

@eaglewinnings800328 күн бұрын
Few factors at play here: 1. He’s a slow elevator: Some guys might have a higher vertical than others but how long does it take them to get there? Charles Barkley was an incredibly quick leaper. Although there were guys who had higher verticals than him and were much taller, Chuck got to the ball faster than them because he got was a very fast leaper. 2. He has small hands and poor hand strength which causes a loose grip: A lot of dunks show him clearly getting a hand and often times both hands on the rim with ease but he just misses putting the ball down. I remember Phil Jackson said one of the main reasons MJ was better than Kobe was his massive hands. They gave him an insane advantage when it came to scoring in the paint. Phil said Kobe tried to compensate for it by maniacally working on his hand strength and grip but there was no way to make up for sheer size. 3. He’s surrounded by better athletes: I’ve seen Williams and he’s an average NBA athlete. Better athletes that are taller are contesting his dunks and trying a contested dunk against a bigger defender who’s more athletic than you will always be a challenge. He should work on finishing with reverse layups and abandon trying to dunk the ball because this is really just bad.
