So the top tier set up is the Sony speakers and center for beginners? What would you recommend to stretch the budget even a bit further?

if you're wanting to upgrade the speakers to the next tier, I'd recommend the Jamo Studio Series S 803 Home Cinema System. 5 speakers: 4 bookshelves and a center for $350. And they sound better than the Sony S5's imo.

Buy the Denon AVR from the Denon website, go to the refurbished section. All of the Dayton Audio speakers you’ll buy from www.parts-express.com , they sell them on Amazon as well but they charge shipping, so just buy directly from the Parts Express website. The Sony speakers you can buy off of Amazon or your local Best Buy. The Neumi and Micca speakers you buy off of Amazon. Happy Hunting!
