I think he was taken out due to being the only one to have not been in a mainline mario game before. Waluigi has only been in the mario spinoff games (mario party, Mario Kart, mario sports, etc). There isn't a single official mario platformer game that has him, even as a non playable character.

Waluigi was definetely thought of at one point during the development. I'd say they wanted to limit the playable characters to 4 people for the multiplayer and they already settled with Yoshi being the main character. I really wish they had Waluigi instead of Yoshi he should of been kept as a NPC like he was in the original game and gives you 1 ups. I remember having dreams about playing as Waluigi in SM64DS man i hate that because of how real it felt.

I think the Waluigi References probably means that there’s a lot of purple around the game, like how in the Rex Room the polka dots on the floor are red (for Mario) green (for Luigi and Yoshi) yellow (for Wario) and purple, possibly for Waluigi, or even in the title screen where the Vs button is red, adventure button is yellow, rec room is green, and the options button is purple

Likely, with the Purple Rabbits originally being a thing before they’re replaced with orange rabbits, purple likely stood for Wario. Yellow would then stand for Yoshi.

When you normally grab the Big Star with Mario, he gets the wing cap and flies around. If you beat the game with the other characters, they also get the wing cap, but they don't fly around

The Jolly Roger Bay painting in DS is based on its appearance in the Japanese N64 version. Also something I noticed one time... The DS igloo is still mostly based on the original layout if you compare the maps, except the floor became water and the walls became the new floor.

for 33:06 I can help translating a few of this symbols. Based on what i see from the video(sorry i cant see some of them clearly) The white tile 雪 means snow, the yellow tile 花 means flower, im not sure about the light blue tile since its not clear Im assuming it’s 水 which means water but it could also be 冰 which means ice, light brown tile 木 means wood, Brown tile 土 means earth, green tile 草 means grass. Im guessing they are places to test the sound efects for when the characters walk on different textures.

The igloo part is about the interior, not the exterior. The interior had to be redesigned because the DS can't render multiple layers of transparency, which the old igloo had. That's the same reason why they changed the ice maze star into just a couple of ice cube stacks. It would be hard to navigate a space like that if you can't see where the walls are.

A little thing that I’m a bit surprised wasn’t included in the iceberg: If you decide to ground pound while standing on a sign, you can actually push it into the ground. If you do it as Yoshi, Mario, or Luigi, you’ll still be able to read the sign, and your character will even automatically crouch in order to read it when you interact with it (Wario will just push it all the way into the ground, making it unreadable. Other characters do this when pounding the sign a second time).

The Mario bros are locked behind doors in princess peaches castle while the keys are in the portraits where you have to fight the bosses to get them. The Bros aren't in a different dimension, the keys are. However I do see the argument with the fact that warios painting is behind the mirror which could be an alternate dimension but that would mean that Luigi can just change which dimension he goes to after picking up a power flower.

(5:40) Download play was local play, it was the only multiplayer mode available. You would open the multiplayer mode and your friends (or whatever) would open DS download play and join you as one the yoshis. You couldn't select your characters but there was caps in game that you let be Mario, Luigi, or Wario. Other than that, superb video.

I can cut in about the Castle being the “original castle.” In the SM64 Iceberg an entry states that the castle was magically altered by Bowser due to the lack of things a castle needs for people to live like furniture. In the DS version you have at least 2 rooms that actually have furniture, the rec room and Peach’s room. That means either the castle was changed only mostly or not changed at all in the DS Version.

I disagree. They probably wanted you to have mario unlocked to go to Big Boo's Haunt, So they made Yoshi not able to kill Boos. But then probably just chose to still not allow you to kill Boos as Yoshi after getting Mario, Or just forgot to make Yoshi able to kill Boos after unlocking Mario. I hope that I explained that correctly. (And I think they probably wanted you to use Mario to unlock Luigi. Because they're brothers).

The Japanese text at 33:05 is floor types. I'm guessing it was to test walking/running audio. The white tile's symbol means snow. The yellow one next to it is grass. The blue one after that is ice. The orange one below it is tree (or wood). The deeper blue is water. My Japanese isn't as good as it should be, so I didn't bother checking the others.

I actually have the privilege of knowing something that isn't on the iceberg! (Though it might be what the "everyone can use the wing cap" is referring to) that, you can enter the wing cap stage as Yoshi. I've only been able to do it one time per save file, but upon entering it Yoshi will appear with wings on his back. He can't fly in this state, he just plummets to the death zone but it's a thing that exists. Perhaps the other characters were planned to be able to use the wing cap in normal play, but it was scrapped to give Mario more unique abilities?

Hey, a thing I can answer! At 33:05, the characters on the floor are 雪 snow (white), 花 flower (yellow), 冰 ice (light blue), 水 water (blue), 土 dirt (darker brown), 木 wood (lighter brown). and the last one I can see clearly (at 33:11) (green) is grass 草. The purple tile may be 無, but that’s a bit contextual. It’s typically used in relation to absence or “without”, so there’s that to consider. There’s also one more, that’s a greyish-brownish, also at 33:11 but without looking at other videos or TCRF I can’t see what’s written so I don’t know what it is

Something that I feel is missing because I'd always found it peculiar is Peach's ponytail. Peach's usual design has her depiced with her hair down, but for some reason this is not the case in this game. In fact, she's never seen with her hair down in this game (as opposed to the original game), not even in paintings of her. I've always wondered why. They did have a DS model of her with her hair down in NSMB. Maybe it's because of Super Mario Sunshine.

the waluigi symbols entry is referring to symbolism of waluigi, as in, signs that he was intended to be in the game, this mostly comes from the fact that many things that involve 4 colors in the game, are symbolic of mario, luigi, wario, and supposedly waluigi, like the towers in the level where you unlock the power flower block, the color of the settings button on the opening menu, and the colored circles on the floor of the minigame room. there are a few others but thats the main idea, and thats what that entry was referring to
