I think their definition of 7 wonders is off. To me they did more of a Mount Rushmore where these are pillars or influential anime that had impacts on the medium. 7 wonders should be more monolithic, stand alone to be how great/beautiful/awe inspiring would be. No one goes around saying how influential the coliseum, or great wall or chichen itza are rather than saying "wow these things are amazing". Akira would still fit, and honestly Death Note could have a strong argument.
@RodrigoBarrazaNunez Жыл бұрын
I watched Death Note years after it aired, and yes is dated, and yes it has a rather simple story with a lot of cool narrative gadgets and really over the top characters, but I always thought that watching that series when it aired, on a weekly basis, it would have been amazing. Kinda like Breaking Bad, Lost or SNK. In that regards, and agreeing with you, I would have liked Slam Dunk to be on the list, but the anime didn't finish, and the manga is clearly better.

@akirayuki6275 Жыл бұрын
As someone that has seen Haruhi I'd still think Death Note should be higher, not just from a popularity standpoint but in general how Haruhi has some points which can easily stray people away from anime. It's not only not a safe show to recommend to people that want to get into anime, it's a hard sell even for a huge portion of anime fans. It might have been somewhat influential for the anime industry itself but as they've established during this podcast it definitely wasn't the only one and the most important one. I'd probably put Astro Boy 10 times more than I'd put Haruhi, and although I wouldn't put Evangelion either I'd definitely put Eva before I ever put Haruhi in. As a teen that hasn't been ever introduced to anime I've known about Astro Boy as a character for a long time, but I had to get about a year or 2 into anime to even discover the existence of Haruhi because even critically, although it was praised a lot, it wasn't really this huge thing that everyone that got into anime could easily know of.
@grey_f98 Жыл бұрын
on top of that he was at first against having Evangelion or any Ghibli on it, and then went on to suggest Attack on Titan and Death Note, he's a little basic but doesn't realize it also (unlike Death Note) Citizen Kane is actually really REALLY good, Connor should watch it before clowning on critics for putting it on their list

Haruhi was the Evangelion for the 2000s. Extremely controversial and divisive but still a significant time period in anime history. I appreciate Joey and Garnt for sticking up for Sailor Moon being on the list. Idk where Connor's brain was at on the meaning of the word "influential", but an anime that played such a large part in popularizing an entire ganre in the anime Industry, and not only that, popularizing a ganre that specifically catered to the female audience, something that I'm sure played a big part in a lot of women getting into anime, maybe even growing up to create their own shows and stories directly inspired by it. Especially in a time such as the 90s it was important for girls to be able to see themselves not only as the main characters in a story about fighting evil, but to also see these characters embracing their femininity and still being able to fight. I am shocked Hunter x Hunter wasn’t even mentioned. It is the perfect mix between influence, popularity, and quality to be one of the 7 wonders. In terms of influence, it has clearly inspired modern Shonen, which are now the most popular anime on the planet, narratively a ton. The subversion of genre norms and the world building of a lot of the biggest modern anime’s owe a lot to HxH, and these things are usually pretty important parts of their stories. It’s also way more popular than people realize. It’s not unlikely for me to go out and randomly see someone with a Spider Troupe hoodie on. It makes sense because it’s a show that pretty much anybody who gets into a Shonen will watch and it’s a lot easier for an older audience to get into than other older Shonen. In terms of quality, I don’t even have to tell you, it’s one of the goats. HxH got severely overlooked.

imo South East Asia is pretty much the same as South America in socio economic terms for tourism, I would even say that SA is better for tourism than SEA. I would recommend to stay away from the Great Columbia's nations (Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, etc) other than that, Peru, Chile, Argentina, half of Mexico and Half of Brazil are really safe and good places to tour which will give you amazing sights.
@nfrance999 Жыл бұрын
The issue with a lot of central and southern American countries, is they are two VERY distinct sides. Their is the tourist side, which are nice, safe, and very distinctly SEPARATE from the actual goings on of the country, and then there is the REAL day to day life. It's not that you instantly get stabbed or shot or something if you wander into the more "real" parts of the country, it's that if you haven't grown up in these places, its VERY obvious you're a tourist, and it makes you susceptible to the things that natives of a country know to avoid or such. They are wonderful places to visit, but unless you have a directive native helping you out, it's best to ensure you keep to safer, tourist, areas.

Their list (for TLDW people): Dragon Ball Akira Evangelion Sailor Moon Haruhi Suzumiya (Connor replaces this with Death Note) Gundam Attack on Titan Personally think based on their definition of the 7 wonders (06:10 Garnt: "The point of the seven wonders of the world is they are places you need to see before you kick the bucket" and the video title too "The 7 Anime That Every Fan NEEDS To Watch"), I don't think I agree with many of these choices. Attack on Titan's ending is too poor imo (Game of Thrones reminiscent) - I know they haven't read the manga but I thought they knew that it wasn't well received. Dragon Ball (and I haven't seen some of the other older ones like Sailor Moon and OG Gundam but this might apply to them too) has too much filler to be enjoyable today. Influencial? Sure. Regarding the whole «Garnt is always late» thing: Garnt has confirmed and come out as being diagnosed with ADHD on a previous podcast. One extremely common symptom or behavioural trait in people with ADHD is something called ‘time blindness’. People with time blindness may have difficulties with tasks related to time, such as estimating how long an activity will take, sticking to schedules, and recognizing when it’s appropriate to start or finish tasks. In short, Garnt isn’t late out of malicious intent or laziness, he’s just built different. So give him some slack guys, he’s trying his best. ❤️

The 7 wonders of anime should have been genre based because of how weird anime genres are. Magical girl, Isekai, Idol and Mecha anime made such a massive impact to the anime community that you can just say that genre and instantly think of that one anime that is popularized the genre. It goes, Magical Girl: Sailor Moon or Madoka Isekai: SAO or Konosuba Idol: Love Live or Idolmaster Mecha: Gundam or Eva Think of non-anime genres, like if I say, Robot: Transformers or Terminator Cartoon: Spongebob or Tom and Jerry Space: Star Wars or Star Trek And even just things in general, Superhero: Superman or Spider-Man K-Pop: BTS or Black Pink Phones: Apple or Samsung I hate some of the things that are on this list like SAO and Samsung but influential is the keyword here. Without these things gaining insane popularity, all of the pop culture references wouldn't exist or the genre wouldn't expand past their niche audiences

As many other south americans have said in the comments, south america is great to visit and explore, there are so many things to see and experience, but will agree that is not safe if you dont know how to transverse through the citys. The best way is to have someone from the country to show you around at least for your first visit so that you know the ropes on what ti avoid. Knowing the language would help massively, I am from Ecuador and even though English is supposed to be taught trough lots of schools, it is not something really people know. If you know Spanish you will be fine, of course you have to know that spanish is not the same across the continent, one word can mean something completely different on another country all though most of us would understand what you tried to say, but still better to avoid some words. Also, being “third world” countries doesnt mean we dont have amazing places to eat or to stay, more than anything it means the economic state of the country and the willingness of international companies to also make their business within the country. And for tourists you can find so many great places to stay. Of course I would recommend Ecuador, we have 4 different regions within the single country, we have the coastal region with great beaches, the mountain region with one of the talles mountains/volcanoes (chimborazo) in the world, we have the rain forest region which is also part of the amazonas and finally we have the galapagos islands which you guys have previously discussed the now extinct galapagos tortoises that used to live there, these islands are incredibly beautiful and I cannot recommend them enough. As well Ecuador’s food has so many ranges due to the four regions that are simply amazing. But besides my own country South America is a place you definitely should visit, you only need to do your research on security measurements and if possible get someone local to show you around, but it is really an amazing continent to visit

The problem with using most influential as the criteria is that by definition, most of the things that are most influential are from farther back in the past. Recent anime, even if they are better, are released in a time when anime has developed more, so it is difficult for them to have as big of an influence as an anime that came out when the industry was still finding its standing. The first person to mold clay into a pot shape is the most influential pot maker of all time, closely followed by the guy who put a handle on it, but that doesn't mean they were the best pot makers of all time. There was just so many things that hadn't been discovered yet that any new innovation hugely influenced everything to come in the future.
@thomasffrench3639 Жыл бұрын
Influence is more complicated than that. If the second guy who made the pot inspired the entire industry of pot making that the second guy would be way more influential than the first guy. It’s more about reach and that is what is more influential.
@sanhakim1335 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasffrench3639 that's why I said most. Yes, there are those one in a billion pot makers who can influence the world even after it's developed, like the one who decided to make it out of metal, but the ones who are farther back in the past have an inherent advantage. 7 wonders means “influential and good watch” Therefore, 7 wonders of anime: Akira Astro Boy 1963 Dragon Ball Sailor Moon Neon Genesis Evangelion Spirited Away Death Note Contenders: Cowboy Bebop Full Metal Alchemist High School of the Dead Avatar The Last Airbender (if including “anime inspired”)

@@warhammerguy Nah, Connor was pretty clear with the categories at the beginning. The issue is the other two, especially Joey, have a severe old anime bias. Instead of finding 7 anime wonders, they just name the 7 old animes that obviously inspired everything that came after it whereras Connor was trying to go past that. As the other guy said, no one should recommend people to watch Haruhi nowadays which was also somewhat highlighted when Connor ranked Death Note above it.

Not really, if you had a brain you would know he’s talking about Astro boy being on every list already. 🤡
@doctordoom85 Жыл бұрын
The problem is most of the anime directly influenced by Astro Boy would also be very old. Haruhi was insane in how influential it was: it made the idea of adapting light novels far more enticing to studios and such as LN anime adaptation were nowhere near as common pre-Haruhi, which of course would pave the way for a certain isekai light novel to be adapted and send that genre into overdrive. As a bonus, Haruhi also influenced the many “club doing various activities” genre as well. Honestly, if we’re talking the entire catalog of anime since the 2000’s, Haruhi impacted the direction of the medium even more than the Big Three.

Yo, I'm brazilian, heard y'all were talking about us in this video so imma stick my opinion down here There are definitely some cool stuff to see here, Christ the Redeemer is an obvious pick, there's also some really cool beaches and sand dunes up in Ceará, I don't know how much you can explore the Rainforest but there's always the pantanal (which is cool as shit) if you want some adventure. Fernando de Noronha, Minas Gerais, Brasília, can't really vouch for any of them because have never been there but it might be cool as well. The thing about Brazil being dangerous is simple: You cannot come here with a foreigner mentality. If you don't know what you're doing, you might get in trouble, you might gather some unwanted attention and that's not good. Don't let that scare you away, just understand what goes on and try to avoid trouble. I have been living here for years and can guarantee that if you know what to do, it is way less scary. Ask any brazilian acquaintances how to survive this country and maybe you'll fall in love with some of the wonderful things we have to offer. About the rest of South America: I don't fuckin know. I really don't wanna shittalk any other latin american country. They are very pretty though, most of them. Last thing: Do not order Cuscuz if you're not going to the northeast region. They somehow took the wonders of cuscuz mastered by years of northeastan cousine and turned it into a fucking jello with eggs and idk man its gross.

Okay, I understand if it's "7 anime that every fan needs to watch." I just won't really call that list "The 7 Wonders of Anime." Most of the anime on that list does not inspire wonder in me. Like... For a wonder of anime, One Piece was a better fit for Shounen. One Piece has gone on for over 1000 episodes with countless islands and story arcs. The sheer amount of imagination and creativity that went into designing and writing these is undoubtedly a cause to be one of The 7 Wonders of Anime. It's astounding. I would have put more movies in that list. Akira is fine there. But I'd also have put Redline for it being a pure animation flex for anime that has yet to be topped to this day; Spirited Away, a mystical experience of great animation and a wonderfully creative setting; Paprika, the insane animation and direction under Satoshi Kon's vision; A Makoto Shinkai film (maybe Your Name) for a fun story with a lot of heart, covered in phenomenal background art and character animation. If another series, Made in Abyss I think is another good pick. The world building and creature design, the unmistakable OST, and a touch of horror, a combination I have yet to see in any other anime. That's just my idea of that list but you can see where I'm going with this. The 7 Wonders of the World aren't popular because they influenced or changed the world, but because they're simply a marvel to look at. It looks epic. It looks strange. It can feel mysterious. It can feel otherworldly. It makes you think of what went behind making them , if they were man-made. I think for The 7 Wonders of Anime, you need to think more of the overall audiovisual experience and the creativity involved.

The answer for Garnt's lateness is probably his adhd lol I used to beat myself up for being late to everything all my life until i got diagnosed and found out that being late to stuff is literally out of your control eith adhd most of the time so that's probably why its an issue for Garnt The part about friends giving you a time that is earlier for you than for everyone else is such a shared ADHD experience

Joey being an Astro Boy lover is not what I expected. Underrated love for Ozuka works right there! The grandfather of manga/anime. Also about anime movies, Satoshi Kon deserves praise. Not just Ghibli! His movies influenced multiple works out in the west (and were also openly plagiarized, sadly.)

Also, how do these boys not know how to stay on topic? Every single time they make a list about anime, they get stuck on "influential". The seven wonders of the world, are not wonders because of their influence lmao. Theyre just things you "have to see". Nobody NEEDS to see Sailor Moon, Death Note, Gundam, basically everything on the list except Akira and maybe DBZ. also - Joey: "Dragon ball never trended on twitter". Ultra Instinct episode literally did. - One Piece will never pass Dragon Ball, cause only people who love One Piece even care about One Piece. Its too "niche". Because no one wants to start a 1000+ episode season. Everyone knows Super Saiyan. - Garnt thinking Akira isnt the most influencial piece of anime media ever, is moronic. Does he not know how many movies in Hollywood have done the Akira bike slide? lmao - Connor complained about every anime that Garnt or Joey said, yet i dont think hes seen a single one of them. - If theyre getting stuck on the word "influential" then something like Bleach would have to be up there, since literally every single mangaka for the most popular animanga right now, was influenced by Bleach/Kubo. This list could be longer, but their anime talk is giving me ligma.
