Whenever I speak about what I'm wearing after I get a complement, I try to encourage men to care about their style. I explain to them what I do and how I do it (thrift stores, learning, having fun). I help them along the way if they reciprocate. I also make it a habit of mine to always learn the history of a piece of clothing before I buy it as well. Like a peakycap or leather jacket. It's a learning curve, and that's what I'm proud of.

Yes on etiquette! Yes on manners! I'm British, so the whole "gentleman" thing is fairly engrained in our culture, and I find it endlessly fascinating how so many people approach it like putting on a costume- I'm dressed as gentleman today, hypebeast tomorrow. Your actions and manners are the true measure of a sophisticated and elegant man. Merry Christmas, Antonio, and greetings from the Royal Military Academy
@GJHistoryOfWarAndConflict3 жыл бұрын
I am also British, but I would disagree that being a gentleman is engrained for the vast majority of the British people. Lost count how many times I have seen guys wearing T Shirts on dates or casual clothes to the office. It varies depending on location as to the local 'style'

@@nacholibrerm5723 , ahem! Almost 70million in fact! The middle class and upper middle class tend to dress so well in the UK. It is effortless. This is actually "engrained" at a young age. Here is my "why" - Since middle school, I was bullied every day. Then, I wore soccer clothes and went into an "emo" dressing phase. One day, I noticed that the way I dressed made friends, family, and teachers view me as something I was not. From that day (12 years ago), I have dressed nice. The results have paid off more than anything else in my life. Getting jobs is easier, no negative first judgments, and promotions happen quickly. (As a sidebar, I was promoted from a job after being there less than a month, over people there more than a year, because I "looked the part" and was "well dressed enough to put in front of parents.") Now, I am in law school, have worked for a state supreme court justice, and meeting big law lawyers for possible jobs. Currently, I am getting into shoes for the first time, and get complements on my Allen Edmonds Hamilton boots when I run into meetings. My style has improved, but I am still learning.

@@sipsimies1588 "Big law lawyers"... that is the phrase I used. "big law" is a type of law firm that employs more than 200 lawyers and pays well. It is the type of firm you see on TV shows like Suits. So when someone says, "big law lawyers" they are speaking about the lawyers that work in big law firms. (this is as opposed to any other employee at a big law firm)

My “why” is simple: I want to be a good example for my children. Every father wants to look at his kids and say they’re exceptional, but I know that mine can outshine me by a light year someday as long as they have a solid base; I wake up every day and go to work to build that base for them. No other reasons necessary.

My “why”: I’m tired of looking and living in the ghetto tired of working for nothing. Today I put out some resumes at 5 star/luxury business resorts and stuff and that’s all I’m applying for, high class. I got my clothes at a thrift store I’m tall n skinny so of course clothes are baggy a dress shirt two pants two blazers. Might not fit right but I’m not giving up. I’m even learning about etiquette and manners

I love what you said about etiquette. My grandmother sat me at the table when I was 8, at a formal dinner setting and showed me how proper etiquette. She told me, proper etiquette is a moral obligation. To do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. Manners and respect will carry you through the world. Great advice! I like to dress well for work, even though many people dress business casual, most of my colleagues do not make an effort to dress well. It communicates that I am serious about my job. Being detail-oriented is an important function of my profession, and I like projecting that with my attire. I dress well for church. It communicates to ME, that this is important. God deserves my best. It puts me in the right frame of mind for the service. I dress up for dates with my wife. I like to plan occasions where we dress up. It affords us the opportunity to see each other at our best. It communicates to her, that she is my most important person. Why should my boss get my best, and she get less? I spend my work days with him. I am spending my LIFE with HER!

It’s funny you mention uniforms. I worked as a carpenter helper for a large org when I was young. We didn’t have uniforms. One of the guys I was assigned to work with did a lot of what we call side work. He always looked neater than the other guys in the shop. He told it was because when he would go to someone’s house to give them an estimated he had realized that by having neat clean work pants a pressed work shirt and here was the big one, work boots that were broken in but clean. He said it gave people confidence that he was professional and knew what he was doing. He had a trick that he would do. Before he went into someone’s house he made a show of wiping his feet on the mat. It sends a message. A lot of the guys laughed at him behind his back but he didn’t care. Because he was doing all the work he could handle.

You made a comment that had me say out loud, "Thank you!" Style is on my mind every time I put on clothes. But, I am not a lawyer, or a professional businessman. I "manage" a small casino. But the primary source of my income comes from tips. I rarely receive them. After talking to many of the regulars I'm told its the way I dress and carry myself. They tend to believe I'm the owner and therefore don't need their charity. This has plagued me since I was a child. We shopped at thrift stores. But I always put together timeless style, ironed my clothes, ensured proper fit, color-coordinated. Simply put, I never looked sloppy. As a result they always thought I was rich when in fact I was poor. They always viewed my as a leader although I constantly combat anxiety. I've even lost relationships over the impression that the women were somehow lesser than me because of my structure. They needed me to be sloppy, make mistakes and be irrational sometimes. But even my sloppy is calculated. These concepts of style don't fit The Plumber, The Blue Collar Guy. I know this isn't the channel for it, but I need help being The Everyday / Every-man's guy.

With ups and downs that happenned in my recent past there was no better motivator than being recognized as being equal in company and/or social hierarchy. The apathy is what my wife hears about all the time from her friends. They complain that their husbands can't be bothered to put any effort into their attire, even on date night. Not every occasion calls for a GQ level outfit but these guys are wearing cargo shorts, dad shoes and beer brand t-shirts to restaurants where a savvy man would wear a sport coat. She's said that her friends and co-workers are genuinely embarrassed sometimes to be all dolled up on a date but the hubby looks like he's ready for a tailgate party. Don't be that guy.

My "why" is quite simple. Music is the only thing I CAN do. It is the only thing I ever have been able to do, the only thing I ever have been able to understand. So, I need to get myself to a city where that industry DOES exist, so I CAN make a living in the music industry. (If you don't work for the government, the nuclear facility, or the port, you have no purpose in this city. The only option for you is restaurant or retail.)

@ Guitar Nerd. Prior to COVID, the City south of the Equator that best meetts your stated requirement is Melbourne Australia, which has always been the Capital City for live entertainment, that supported an entire Industry with its "Pub Culture". Sixty years ago a very young Olivia Newton John and her friend Pat Carroll used the L aundromat at the end off the street and my neighbour, John Cosgrove who started the Fendermen, took over the group run by Pat Carroll's husband, I can't remember the name at the moment but it was one of the best in Australia. When he wentt to the US with Olivia he wrote many of her songs. So give yourself a holiday break in COVID free Melbourne, and join in a Band. Phil.

And you also have greats such as AC/DC to Newsboys. Although, to be completely honest, those car-sized spiders are the reason why you will NEVER see me anywhere near Australia. For example, those giant Frostbite Spiders all over Skyrim are actually real Australian spiders. Nope. Not going anywhere near there.

You got me. Have just downloaded your new Book. As it is 1am in Melbourne Australia, in the middle of Summer, I expect that the sun will be rising by the time I absorb the rewrite. Phil.

My why... To be the man that not only loves his family, but to be a good example for my kids. I enjoy my work (US Air Force) I truly feel honored that I'm able to serve and want to pass that down to next generation of Airman.

i was an ojt in a site where they're renovating an office area before and my company is for the data cable pulling, i remembered the time when we enter the site for the first time, many of them looked at us and some even go back to their job like their boss entered the area. few days passed, someone approached us and asked why are we there and we answered 'we're doin the cable pulling for data' and then they act normal from then on. it seems strange for me at that time until i recently pay attention to the affects of my casual clothing in an environment. we're all wearing casual clothes with collar at that time
