I actually used to dread dealing with him after school because his attitude was awful. I can now say that I LOVE being around him now!!! He now loves to learn, we aren’t dealing with bullies (in KINDERGARTEN!!!) & now he’s in 2nd grade & just whizzing right on by where he was REALLY STRUGGLING in Kindergarten. My oldest is 16 and he has never been in school. We are so thankful and grateful that I homeschool my 3 kids. This is my second year homeschooling. I have a 1st grader and a preschooler. One of my husbands family members recently attacked homeschooling. Not in a vicious way but nonetheless her words have stuck with me the past week. I have always been confident in my decision to homeschool but she kind of got in my head a bit. My son has been in public school since kindergarten. Next school year (his 4th grade year) will be the beginning of our homeschooling journey. He has had to do so much extra work after school just to keep up (and is still testing behind) that he isn't getting to be a kid. I'm tired of it. My husband isn't sold on it, and is dismayed at the idea of cost (not taking into account the money we already spend on his public education... because you know, every time you turn around, they want money), but I am already at home with my youngest (who I am glad to say has such a natural curiosity and hunger for learning). My son does not possess this drive, and I think the problem lies in lack of interest (not being confronted with learning opportunities that appeal to his interests, and not having any choice in how he learns). There have been a heap of cons for me over the years, but all in all, I want my son to love learning, and get to experience the glory of being a kid. I think I can help give him these opportunities that public school has yet to fulfill. I'm excited, and quite committed. Covid showed me the lack of personalization, instruction, and love that has been part of his experience... and I'm just sad that I didn't make this decision sooner.

We always wanted to homeschool, after the lockdowns we have been homeschooling since.. We are never looking back! My own mother is completely against it. She throws EVERY stereotype at me and it is almost every time she is here. I will not let up. We don't like the idea of them being influenced by biased teachers. We don't want them being forced to wear masks, and possibly in the future getting forced the juice. We also have VERY different views on history and the world. We want to build them up to start their own careers and base our learning around what they are passionate about instead of them being forced to learn boring things they will NOT remember in the future. To me, it seems that they are only teaching children these days to be good little slaves, we don't want ANY of that.

I’m an older Momma of a 6yo, and my very old Dad sure has a lot to say against what I’ve chosen to do, despite the obvious “SMARTS” and honorable character that my son displays. Many teachers have zero training for how to deal with children's social-emotional needs in an *appropriate* manner for the academic environment. I've been more surprised to learn that many teachers do not have a degree in the specific subjects they teach. It keeps costs down for the schools, and more opportunities to fire someone if they don't like them. I feel most teachers worth their salt; are held back at public school anyhow. I do truly feel that there are two major types of child that could benefit from public school. In either case the main factor is that their guardian(s) legitimately cannot handle homeschooling. Whether it's medical, personal responsibility, mental disability, or simply unwilling to engage and facilitate. The other separate types would be a child that's headed to a major university CAN and I think ideally would homeschool, but they will have more immediate opportunities in most cases for extra curriculars that will benefit their chances of getting into a university. Many universities now also operate along the lines of more socialistic ideals, so the "hamster on a wheel" factory-setting aspect of school will possibly benefit them along with the mention of less parental involvement. The second type is the other end; a child that needs too many supports that cannot be given at home. Especially if the parent feels they are destined to do the bare minimum and need as much structure and direction as possible. You can have those things at home; but if you plan to train Vs teach the child; and value the mindset of complying and following along with society because that'll be their best chance. My child was being abused in school. Special needs case. I was so scared to leave even though we left before Kindergarten, so we had some time before legally required to return. We chose a charter school thinking that was the only option, and to get therapy services. It was a decent transition for us. But the school was also a let down in many ways; I was still the main implementor of all education and even therapy. I often had to train and (constructively) criticize the staff because they were poorly trained and/or apathetic and not engaging my child nor consistent in the ways they taught material. I was making the lesson plans, choosing curriculum etc. Once I discovered homeschool is possible/LEGAL it was a lightbulb moment for sure. Just in time as the Charter school is becoming more like simply a distance learning public school. Major disappointment. Many parents from the school are also leaving to *truly* homeschool. (I now get the "charter school isn't real homeschool" idea). We will miss the funding but they kept such a choke-hold on it that we were still spending much of our own money. There are also so many free resources out there now it's really not worth it IMO. It's been so much less stressful to work on our schedule, I spend much more time developing more efficient lesson plans, my child is more successful with less stress of redundant policies. It's more time for education vs providing statistics for the school to get funding, and so providers to get paid to put in minimum effort and nothing else. We can teach practical life skills as well. That's something missing in almost any public school.

Hi! Fellow Alabama alumna! Homeschooling has been amazing! I, too, went to public schools and public university. Then my M.B.A. is from a Christian university. Now I’m working on a 2nd master’s at John Hopkins to help homeschool our amazing daughters! I am also pro-education! We tried private Christian school at first and it wasn’t best for us. We’ve been homeschooling for 3 years and LOVE it! School choice week is this next week and we celebrate all of our friends! So we are an eclectic blend of Charlotte Mason, Montessori, Classical, Unit Studies, and a dash of this and that! I love books and curriculum but love the additional things we experience. We experienced over 40 field trips last year! We study art history, music appreciation,etc. My husband and I are learning too! I love lifetime learning! Thank you for your video! I’m currently involved in starting a homeschool Beta club to celebrate some amazing students at elementary, junior, and senior levels. Report cards are great but we focus on portfolios and the “whole child.”

Putting my kid back in public school from a private school was the WORST thing I could have ever done. Needless to say I just took her out of public school mid day yesterday...kids are not being taught they are being brainwashed to focus on pronouns.. the secrets that are kept from parents and the things they are allowing I'm traumatized to say the least. My daughter has been in a charter school for the last 4 years. We will be homeschooling next year for the 1st time for a multitude of reasons, many which were mentioned. But mostly, I am extremely uncomfortable with what is going on in society, and in the schools. I want to “Brian wash” her to believe in God, to be patriotic, to love learning, and to believe in her own ability.

I was so happy to listen to you this morning! I have begun schooling my children early in a Montessori environment in our house and encouraged it fir our grandchildren(31 grandchildren soon 2 more) . I tried kindergarten and first grade for my first son which were a waste of time. My second son had montessori in my small school and until high school, and then West Point after his dad, 3rd a wonderful daughter and many lossesof babies, but then two more smart boys last for West Point, and at 44 another baby girl! I was blessed and they all love each other! They are home schooling their own! And I am homeschooling my first great grandchild! At almost 74 I still love home schooling ! In my opinion, children (especially grades k-3) learn best in an environment that feels safe, and secure. With the current climate in our country, schools are structured more like prisons. My old high school was knocked down, and the building that replaced it is LITERALLY the blueprint of a prison. It’s horrifying. Clearly the metal detectors, and X-ray machines weren’t enough.

Great video. I’ve been homeschooling for nine years. I pulled my son out of public at 5 years old for a few reasons and I haven’t looked back. There are so many benefits to homeschooling. It’s very different compared to traditional education and can provide so many more opportunities to explore interests, which can even lead to early college entrance. Character development is a large reason. It’s important to instill strong character and moral traits while pursuing home education. Thank you for your viewpoint and perspective! There are far too many myths about homeschooling and it’s great when others can discuss the significant benefits.

They have multiple teachers and a big support system such as online/in-person tutors, social programs like the YMCA, neighbors & members of the community like librarians & etc…family, friends, co-op groups/play dates and etc…I honestly don’t do much, just monitoring them through the process. Like in the morning, they do their normal wash routines, make their own breakfast and then log into their online classes. They are done by 1pm and then they are outside playing or etc…

Thanks Dr. Lybrand, I homeschooled because I found my local public school to be substandard. I discovered a whole world of fun programs for advanced students. Parents can find social opportunities that double as education: music, acrobatics, Young Entrepreneurs of America, Toastmasters International for public speaking, learning a biblical language--instead of Spanish, joining book groups, etc. Parents, jump in! The water is great.

Homeschool is superior to the options we have experienced. I pulled my son from his supposedly well rated charter a month before the pandemic began ironically. It was almost as though it was meant to be. It took a few months to undo the damage that had been caused by being surrounded by poorly influenced peers, and inattentive, inexperienced staff. He was so tightly raveled. It was devastating. I still have some ptsd from the whole ordeal. What seems like the expected course, or the easier route, is not always as it seems. He is thriving now. It’s interesting, because I have always owned German Shepherds 😂. I’m a former groomer/trainer, and they are the breed for us. Thank you for your insight. I subscribed.

This was most excellent.✊❤️ I’m an older stay-at-home Momma of a 6yo, and have always taken great delight in *Unschooling* him right from the start. Every moment *is* a teaching opportunity - we simply need to practice awareness, creativity, patience, and grace (for them and ourselves). This past year was our first “official” homeschooling year, as we got involved in a faith-based co-op (which meets weekly, requires all the parents to create and teach 3-4 lessons, and even has chapel services and field trips.) This year, we will begin complying with our state’s registration requirements (must be 6yo), making *home education* officially official! 😁 My very old Dad sure has a lot to say against what I’ve chosen to do, despite the obvious “SMARTS” and honorable character that my son displays. LOVED this video! I’m almost 3 weeks into homeschooling for the first time with my 4.5 year old and am just now realizing all the paperwork and planning that has to get done to meet the accredited standards in the 10 learning periods for the year. I’m feeling overwhelmed. It’s a crazy but I believe the right journey for us now for TK. If we continue may it be by God’s grace and if not, then let it be God’s timing for him to go to a real school and make good godly friends. I am super nervous managing the home, my 2 year old, just daily life, meal planning, our routines, and 5 subjects to teach but I appreciate the knowledge and encouragement you pass on. My daughter has special needs ( mostly physical) and did well in public elementary. At 14 , public school or the people there just look past her. She has the label of just being handicapped. Teachers don't think she will not do anything or kids don't want to be friends with the " kid in a wheel chair" . I am now looking into homeschooling for high-school. I hope I can be better for her. Great point about children needing a frame of reference about religion, and not mentioning religion and values is teaching them that empty value system. You should write a tiny 30 page book on your homeschooling experiences and self-publish it on KDP, like I did. I’ll help ya.

The goal is to allow parents to must go to work, to be able to give their kids homeschooling by paying the delegated homeschooling agency for providing a homeschooling teacher that word Homeschool such a parent’s children. I live in New York City, and the cost-of-living is so high that most parents, the wife and the husband, must go to work. I think homeschooling would work in New York City. I really don’t think that will work until the kids are older and you’ve settled the system down dot there’s something very very important about what we model and require in the home. If parents must work, then something else needs to be and Play… Perhaps hiring a tutor if school is off the table.

I‘m happy I did it with two of my 3 children. The way they can think and solve problems is quite different to children who attend school.

One of the biggest arguments against home schooling is that it became a phenomenon in religious circles. The problem with that is that public schools and universities were also set up by religious groups. The university system we have today was literally created by the Catholic Church. As home schooling increases, so to is it for secular reasons.

Developed by the Catholic Church? I thought the public school system model was developed by the Prussian military / government to ensure future obedience of Soldiers, along with developing efficient obedient factory workers.

@@norcal-ce7yk Kind of. It goes back quite a bit longer than that, with State and Church involved in funding and/or encouraging schooling. What I mean is Public Schooling wouldn't have been a thing without the Catholic Church funding education throughout Europe. Universities especially wouldn't have been a thing as they were all built by the church first. The university culture was formed around the 12th century, with students from all over Europe taking pride in naming their masters/tutors from where they learned abroad. We still do this till this day. A lot of schools today are historically monastic or catholic schools taken over by the state.

I just know that when I was blessed with my beautiful girl, she came to align me, teach me and me teach her and knowing myself as someone who doesn't conform to society and Government by non consent and knowing how much I unlearned by public school and the trauma and lack of self love and value cause of being placed with strangers, how I was treated and how I knew these teachers didn't love me or probably like me, I know if my emotionally unavailable parents at the time decided to allow me to flourish at home and learn and teach them and become Great at what I came here to do, I'd have definately appreciated them and myself more. I want to do right by my child and continue our freedom, adventures, our learning in our safe haven as well as going anywhere when and where we want with no permission to do so. ❤

Yep...that is a challenge...but it depends on the job requirements and your creativity. Even then, there could be a debate between public/private school and hiring a tutor/monitor for your home.

.. And then there is me.. single mom of 4... Working to make a little better living.. And living in Germany.. Where there is pretty much no chance of homeschooling because of the law... I'm a very positive person.. But this makes me kinda sad.. Longing for something I will most likely never achieve... Well.. I guess I can only try my own best! But still.. Interesting Callie. I certainly agree with you that there is an important social aspect to growing up as a well-rounded person. However, school isn't the only way for that to happen. Most 3 year olds aren't in school of any kind. There are friends and play groups and Sunday School (really group babysitting, mostly at 3). Any advice for bad company with neighborhood kids? My boys are both under 10 and on our street we have about 10 boys that all play together. A couple of the boys cuss and are physically aggressive at times. I have tried to limit my sons time with these kids alone but it is hard in a group setting, I don't want to pull them from other friends just because these two boys are out. I have had discussions with my kids about their friends behavior and our expectations, however my youngest (8yrs old) is picking up on some of these bad behaviors. Any advice?

Hi Jessica, Yep, tough. Partly because you want to impact these other boys and families. I think the key is to help them choose their friends (as you know). The next thought is to let them know that if they adopt/pickup the bad behaviors, they just won't be allowed to play with the guys. You could do the second part in stages, two day suspension, etc. More importantly, find the good friends and encourage that. FRL P.S. The group could be divided...groups of 3 or 4 boys isn't quite a 'gang'

I really enjoyed this video. Our son is 15 years old and has 10-12 grades left and we are considering homeschooling. He did well with the virtual learning when schools were closed due to covid. A lot of it depends on what his/your goal is...college? Kind of college? At any rate, I think the key is the quality of the skill development he gets (not necessarily guaranteed by an 'accredited' school). Basically, anything that is having him really sharpen his math (at least through Algebra II), his reading (especially quality books/literature), and his writing, then he's in good shape. We found the Robinson Curriculum as a good match that we could tweak (I designed the Writing Course as a supplement for our kids and then shared it with the world).

I have learning difficulties and struggle to word things right for proof for la but school failed my 2 boys aged 13 n 7 yes old additional needs and I noticed over covid when doing at home my kids started doing so much more than what they were doing in system. I also want my kids to learn about what they want to when they want to instead of being a robot in school and forsed to meet ticks on boxes. I don't have support I been doing a year naw but the pressure of them not being where la expect them to be at their ages in certain areas when I don't want them forsed and then feeling like a failer if you get what I'm saying. They teach a lot of lies about cultures and history and other stuff. What do you think of curriculum and having to be a sertin stage at a certain age?

Sorry for the delay! I think the best kind of schooling is to be as pragmatic in skill development as you can be. If a child is not going to to high level math, what level can they get to? Practical math if the learn (over-learn) it will serve them throughout their lives. A lot of this is soft-skills...politeness, organization, and learning to be helpful/contribute. If the upper limits are unknown, then just consistently improve (read better out loud this month than last month, etc.). The key is to think of all learning as really SKILLS learn and build a program for the skill they'll need. Even knowledge is a skill, if it contributes to their functioning. Knowing all of the road signs is good knowledge. Knowing the periodic table of the elements...not so much (except for advanced STEP folks). Does this help?

Hi thank you so much for this video it was great watching. I have 6 years and 8 years old and 18 and 19who are in uni but my problem is that my 8 years old is globally delayed. He couldn't do anything of year 1 work and just in this pandemic I started homeschool and hes started to do year 2 and 3 work which is a big achievement for him and me. He isn't happy in school at all every morning crying and vomited almost every other day. I wanted to try homeschool now after school has opened and the school is pushing me to send these little ones to school as they get funding for my 8 years old cos of his condition. They are saying they will support him and I have no clue about his condition even though I have helped him in this corona lockdown and he is progressing a lot. I am confused either to home school or still send him school. They are rather forcing me. I have bought the lower year group books and got online classes membership which he loves and a tutor as well. I wouldn't be able to continue to support him if he goes to school as children gets so tired after the 8 hours of school. Thank you so much once again.

English is NOT my first language. You will be surprised how much I have learned along with my kids about English. Find a good curriculum and you will be ok, ask for help if you are confused. KZbin is a great tool!

My biggest problem with homeschooling my children is that I don’t know how to socialize them with homeschooling. I went to public school and I think it did help me but also damage me in some ways. I’m not a very social adult, and my children don’t have any young cousins so I don’t know how to properly teach them social skills and let them exercise those skills. 😕

They can socialize anywhere they go! Socializing isnt only for similarly aged kids. Remember, we adults continue to socialize after high school when we are out in the world with various age groups! You can also look into homeschooling co-ops or meet ups in your area where youll be likely to meet kids closer in age. If youre on FB you can find homeschool groups for your state and area that are good resources too! Dont let this one idea hold you back!

I'm not sure what you mean, but anyone can be taught by a teacher/tutor. I'm a fan of education...if it works. Personally, I wouldn't really call any co-op homeschooling (unless it's only once a week). Someone is always causing someone to learn. If a good teacher in a mass education situation can do it, then more power to them. Homeschool, as to it's basic meaning, is schooling done in the home by the principals of the home (mom and/or dad). Isn't that right?

After the pandemic, and seeing where the education system is going, homeschooling has become my next big journey/ goal - my child is 3.5 and I really want to be able to home school him well, from the beginning ✋ My biggest worries are: 1. The upper grades seem intimidating (which I hope to combat with hiring a tutor or mentor for subjects that require it) 2. What if he doesn't want to "listen to me" when he gets older? Will we get to a point where he doesn't want to learn from me? (I am disciplined by nature, so I know I have the skillset, but I worry my discipline/ guidance skills won't be the trick!)
