Hi! I’m in college at the moment and am wanting to go and do nursing at uni next year, is it ok if I ask you some questions? It would really help! One thing I am really stuck on is whether to do children’s or adults nursing, I’ve always seen myself working with children and for some reason I see children’s hospitals as a more ‘happy’ place to work. On the other hand, I think I would love working with adults, particularly elderly people, I also know that there are a lot more jobs in the adult field and many more options in the future! Do you have any advice that might help me out with this decision?! 😊 Thankyou xx

Hi Sophie, I had a similar dilemma when I was at college. I wanted to do children's nursing but after doing a placement in an infant school I wasn't too sure if I could care for them in an acute environment. I then had two placements in nursing homes and absolutely fell in love. I ended up working in one of those homes for 4 years and they have asked me to come and work there as a nurse. I also now work in elderly medicine and really think I made the right decision choosing adult nursing. There will be just as many jobs for child nurses as for adult so don't let that worry you. If you are able to get some experience working with children and with adults I would recommend doing that before making a decision. Maybe volunteer at your local nursery and nursing home. I hope this has helped, and good luck for your uni applications!! xxx

Hi, Thankyou so much for your advice! I have applied to volunteer on adult wards in my local hospital so hopefully that will help me decide if I can see myself working there or not! Xx
