I've seen a version of the; "Either this wallpaper goes or I do" quote, but is it true that Wilde said this on his deathbed?

A lot of these quotes frame Wilde as a selfish, spoiled(while somehow, at times, living in squalor), immature, shallow aristocratic- without title or peerage, and worst of all , whiney! There's nothing more pitiful and senseless than an unknown, ungrateful, and uninspired talented person.

Except perhaps one that is well known, acts grateful, and is greatly inspired. This person can lose it all with one misstep, one misinterpretation, one popular critic. The gifted person is , in some opinions, duty bound to create their art on command, with no thought to the cost that can take a heavy toll on the artist. I consider any person that creates an item of art ( anything that one creates for their own and/or other's entertainment/enjoyment.), as an artist. Whether one paints, writes, performs, or otherwise creates, and whether it's for vast amounts of money and fame, to get some applause, or some laughs, or even if it's to affect important change, all deserve to have their voice heard, only some are much more effective expressing their thoughts and emotions in the medium of their preference. I believe that success is subjective, in that for some, moving one person in any manner is a win for them, others seem to never get enough praise and adoration, many are satisfied with critical acclaim by both peers, and fans. And still other's aren't satisfied with anything short of some renowned prize, in recognition of the artist's talent. A pullitzer, or even a nobel prize have been bestowed , imo, in some cases , as a result of popularity as opposed to genius content. I'm fairly certain that most (myself included) would settle for that result, despite the reason. However, such a result would probably motivate me to try to do better on my next try, most likely freak myself into writer's block, as well as the feeling that anything less than (whatever the ultimate goal is) a nobel prize , for example, won't fufill my need and prob cause self- doubt, and self-reproach.

While I don't agree with all his quotes I agree with most of them simply bc they are honest. I don't know who said it but ... A man is 3 things. What he thinks he is, what others think he is and what he REALLY is.

Although, I am somewhat familiar with some Wilde, and i would consider myself a fan, I , honestly, am thinking that perhaps I over-rated Oscar's cleverness, and his impact on the literary world. I suppose that if you factor in the many aspects of his life that he couldn't even write too concise a satire describing his experiences. It's difficult to imagine trying to be creative and descriptive when you're constantly being stifled, and may feel at odds with yourself. Not exactly the pearls of wisdom that I always wanted to reference at some appropriate time. I usually end up misquoting or addressing the wrong audience. I do still admire him and enjoy much of his work, especially, his play 'The importance of being Earnest' , which i had the pleasure of experiencing at Stratford.

@@andrewmcgregor6507 "The importance of being Earnest" is my favorite play and comedy too: the irony it is so delicate, that makes me love his alive characters, and life too! In your place, I would feel happy (to play this play 😌)
