The £72k Megane RS Trophy-R Nurburgring Pack is an OUTRAGEOUS Hot Hatch!

When it comes to hot hatches, the Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R Nurburgring Record Pack is as outrageous as they come! With a fully equipped price tag of £72,000, only 30 of these full spec cars will ever exist, taking weight savings to new extremes for a car of this class. After running through just how far the Renault Sport team have taken it, it's time to drive!
In total, Renault are making 500 units of the Trophy-R version of the Megane R.S., of which 32 are UK cars, only 2 of which come from the 30 available in full Nurburgring Record Pack spec. This includes as standard the carbon fibre wheels (in addition to the standard set), carbon ceramics brakes, and swaps out the DRLs to add additional cold air inlets. This is of course in addition to an interior that no longer has rear seats, having been replaced with a storage rack for the spare set, Sabelt buckets and belts, a smaller display so it's lighter than the upgrade size and more. The exterior comprises a carbon fibre bonnet and diffuser with an Akrapovic exhaust to provide the sound, and then the driving dynamics are honed in with adjustable Ohlins dampers.
This car was clearly made for one purpose, to go to the Nurburgring Nordschleife and set a lap record, which it did with a time of 7 minutes 40.1 seconds, the fastest full lap for a front wheel drive car, in this case the 300hp and 400Nm 1.8l turbo 4-cyl Trophy-R equipped with the full pack for the purpose.
With only two such cars in the UK, one in the hands of Renault UK themselves and the other a single customer, it's clearly something quite special to experience, and that becomes apparent instantly when behind the wheel. Let's take a full look through the car, at all the extremes the team at Renault Sport went to in order to shave 130kgs of weight, before a first drive to experience it and a compulsory sound check to enjoy the noise.

Ok... If you’re a Renault enthusiast and want a quick, entertaining car... The Alpine A110 S is almost £20k less (the regular A110 is even cheaper), over 200kg lighter and uses the exact same engine. Mid engined, rear wheel drive, 50/50 weight distribution and looks awesome. I’m completely baffled why anyone would choose this car.

I follow the Renault Sport page on Facebook and I heard that some guy sold his 911 GT3 RS which he used for track days at the Nurburgring to buy one of these Trophy R's to track instead. All I’ve ever heard about these is how fun they are to drive. Everyone these days just cares about how much power a car has which that’s not what driving is about, this Megane is what a lot of cars should be like now and I love it and think it’s 100% worth every penny.

I had the 2014 Megane GT220 for 2 years and they use the RS 265 motor detuned to 220 hp but I think it may have had a little more than 220 hp because I was able to get it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds one evening using gps app. I discovered that if I take out my parcel shelf and put my back seats down I could hear whooshing sounds under hard acceleration like the RS 265 sounds like. I used to be able to park it by just stopping the car, put it into neutral and take my foot off the clutch, the engine would shut off, undo the seatbelt, the auto handbrake would engage, hop out of the car and walk away and it would lock itself as I far enough away with the key in my pocket lol. Now I have traded in and bought a 2018 Koleos and the dash layout and blinker sounds is just the same as the new magane. Nice and roomy comfy and quiet though and gets less than 6 lt/100km on the highway out of a 2.5 litre 4 cylinder which is bonkers.

Just saying, you could get an Ariel Atom for the track (£45k) and a C63 wagon (£20k) instead and still have 7k left that you can use for additional expenses. Certainly a car that is probably worth the money when you add up the components but is it really worth it? Why spend the money trying to get a heavy car lighter when you can have a lighter faster car as well as a relatively practical daily. (With a big 6.2 V8 😎)

You'd be surprised how light interiors are! When I was that way inclined, I removed my interior in my ST thinking Id saved enormous amounts but when I weighed the parts removed, Id saved a whopping 13kg....and that was seats, plastics and rear carpets! I was down to the bare metal

Res Non Verba, just an educated guess. People buy cars that they don’t need because they like them, and the limited nature of these make them more precious, so I could see that these would sell. People certainly don’t always buy cars for practical reasons. In fact, most people do not choose the most practical car for their needs.
