The #Boeing #747 family is arguably the most successful airplane program ever developed. Comprised of 6 distinct variants and 50 years worth of innovation, the program has managed to rack up over 1500 orders to date. However, the newest and most advanced variant of the jet - the 747-8 - hasn’t pulled its weight, accounting for just 10% of all those orders. But despite sluggish sales, building this jet was one of Boeing’s shrewdest business decisions. How is that even possible? Let me explain…

Having been involved with retooling the 747 for the -400 series and again for the new -8F and -8I I can tell you that although they appear the same they are very different and unique. We stretched the fuselage 22.3 feet, changed the skin material to a new type of aluminum, added back in the #5 door in the rear and basically had to retool the factory for building the hardware as we moved from the old factory where Space X is now built to the far end of the property in a much smaller space. The rail cars to ship the sections to Everett didn't have to change, but almost everything except the doors changed. Since those are legacy and based on plaster master models they have to be maintained as they have always been manufactured. I got a lot ot air miles between Hawthorne and Everett for a couple years this last time around.

@@Milesco The Lockheed Constellation might be the most aesthetic subsonic transport, but it was not, I have out, so functional compared to its competitors as an air freighter. Prop transports and jet transports are different entities.

I wish Boeing had used the same philosophy in developing the 737 MAX as they did for the 747-8. "Take a short term loss in order to reap a long term gain."

Then Max should be scrapped and a new single aisle plane should be designed. The old 737 cannot contain the new and bigger turbofan of today technology. MCAS is a crutch to the flawed design.

@kaunas888 It was the “new” Boeing that thought of this ploy to begin with. It was they, not the “old Boeing,” that built the 747-8 and forced Airbus to go all in on the A380. Furthermore it was they who invested in the 787, which despite its numerous problems and expense, has sold well and has taken business away from their competitor, keeping them in the game. The people on this thread look at history with rose tinted glasses. But the old Boeing was far from perfect and McDonnell Douglas was not a sh%t manufacturer.

Indeed but we must not confuse the issue further. Like the video said, Boeing was right to build the 787, despite its problems and expense. They were right to use the 747-8 program as a ploy to get Airbus fully committed to an expensive program, while they put most of their effort into an aircraft that would outsell all of its competitors (and the 787 has done nothing if not that). It was when they effectively tried to innovate and keep everything the same in one aircraft that they utterly and catastrophically failed. I don’t know where the company goes from here. My instinct says they should scale down or outright cancel their 797 plans, and focus on optimizing fuel economy to the greatest extent possible for a clean sheet MAX replacement. But then I’m a global warming obsessed millennial so I guess I would say that. I’d imagine the boomer engineers on this thread would have different recommendations.

I’ll never forget I was at LAX as a crew member of a 727 and a Pan Am 747 took off All of us were in awe of this giant plane That was about 1970 but I still love this plane just as much

I like how the front nose can be moved to get cargo in & out quickly, vehicles too. it doesn't appear that the A380 can do the same ?

@@rscott2247 It is said by those that know about these things, that an A380F would be unbale to take off if it were fully loaded. I'm not a fan of the A380 - it looks like an A330 on steroids!!

@@rscott2247 there is no freighter variant of the a380. they planned it, but there weren't enough orders to justify building it. shame - i saw a mockup of it at a UPS meeting once. massive beast.

Every time I boarded a B747, for my many trans-Atlantic flights, the sight of the four engines always reassured me. I even paid $50 more Lufthansa to get in to their B747-8i as opposed to the 2 engine Airbus 330-300.

Yeah but if theoretically one engine explodes it can eject debris into the engine next to it, causing it to fail too.

I can relate. On my first 747 flight (of only three), the boarding was by stairs. Two flights of stairs with a platform in the middle! The absolute AWE at the sheer size of that machine and how could it even fly is something I will never forget. Details below, if you're interested. It was a LONG time ago, a first-generation 747-100 (already old by then, though), an Air France unit that was flying back from South America to Paris, but I only caught a fifth-freedom leg from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro, via Campinas-Viracopos. At that time, Air France already used the now iconic Eurowhite livery with the stylized French flag on the tail, but that plane was so old (and about to be retired) that it still wore the ancient livery with the blue stripes along the fuselage. And there was what otherwise would be a big inconvenience, but I LOVED it: the plane arrived in Buenos Aires late, so it arrived from Paris when it should already be arriving back from Santiago, Chile and heading back to Europe. Not many South Americans were aware of these fifth-freedom rights, so not many did what I did and bought a ticket for a flight within the continent. And Air France found that there were no passengers booked from Chile to Argentina -- all passengers from Chile were going either to Brazil or to Europe. So, they joined the two flights to reduce the delay and I flew Buenos Aires-Santiago-Campinas-Rio. Three legs on the 747 instead of just two. And the plane was empty, probably only 40 passengers or so. Now, just think: an empty 747, at a time when even in economy class legroom was great, and the French food and wine were superb (again, even in economy). The result was that I got more personal and attentive service in economy than you'd get in most business classes today. It was FABULOUS, an unforgettable flight, the best of my life!

I was a captain on the 747 for United until it's demise. I can tell you this airplane was magical. Pure joy to fly and hands down loved by every passenger that ever rode on board. It had the look and feel of elegance. The A380 misses the mark. It tries to be all things to everyone. The europeans weren't looking to the future, rather beating Boeing as you mentioned in the video.

The A380's claim to fame is a massive economy of scale. There is no other way to transport 800 people 9,000 miles so inexpensively. The downside is the lack of routes capable of utilizing that capacity, but it works great for places like Australia which have reasonably wealthy populations with no other viable modes of intercontinental travel.

I have flown on a B-747-8i, Korean air jfk to incheon and back 3 times. I really enjoyed it. The aircraft is very long! And the second level is almost the length of a B737. The interior is much improved, similar to that of a 777's. Slight improvement on spaciousness but the rest is totally refreshing improvements. The a380 on the other hand is much spacious on both levels, the galleys are huge and has a Duty free store at the rear end. Very nice and modern and I've flown on it twice, jfk to incheon and back. I always take a window seat, and once on a 748i, my seat had a view of the engine. It was beautiful with the nacelle featuring those chevrons.

In the past, I loved getting a window seat just behind a wing. It's fun to watch the various control surfaces being adjusted during take-offs and landings, even seeing a ribbon of condensation flowing over the speed brake (as in a wind tunnel test), or seeing an old-style reverse thrust activate. Of course, it can be unsettling to see how much the wing can deflect during strong turbulence. These days, I prefer a window seat for an exit row to get extra leg room for my Economy seat. This is commonly over the wing, so I have to look out back to see some of the interesting actions.

@@Milesco: Here's part of another comment I made for another video. I hope you like it: My first flights were a trip to Arizona, and back: HNL-LAX-PHX, PHX-LAX-HNL. I was about to graduate from uni, and got several job offers on the US Mainland; one of those companies offered me a tour of its facilities. My flights over the Pacific were on the L-1011. The pilots on that first segment made the best landing I've ever experienced in 37 years of flying: as we smoothly descended, I couldn't feel or hear the wheels touching down on the tarmac; only an increased deceleration of the plane, drawing me deeper into the back of my seat, hinted that we already were on the ground. The whole cabin spontaneously erupted in applause! The funny thing was, I simply assumed ALL landings were like that. In a few hours, however, I found out how wrong I was; on my next flight; the smaller jet experienced a little bit of turbulence, and the landing was a bit rough. I got a little religious on that segment. Yikes! Since that was my first trip away from home and it was for a potential job offer and relocation, I was quite anxious about everything. Additionally, there had been a recent incident with a B-747: its pilot, who saw a warning light for engine trouble, simply shut down the problematic engine, and he adjusted for that lost of thrust, so nothing went amiss. But after he landed, a ground maintenance guy ran up to the flight deck to ask what happened to his engine. It was missing! So, having a window seat for each of my flights, I took it upon myself to monitor the engines of my planes on that trip. And as we flew over the Arizonan desert, I looked down out my window and squinted hard, hoping to find the missing engine which fell off that B-747. Ha!

As a passenger on a 747 early on in the 70's, later in the 80's commuting to Paris on TWA's 727 flight 800, I was always comfortable and confident. The alternate was the L1011 which didn't compare. Later, I was fortunate to fly Zurich- Jan Smuts (Joburg) on the 747 combi multiple times. If you sent me around the world today, I'd prefer the Queen even if it was a freighter.

This being said like the 747 didn't get kept by PanAm from sinking after it failed to meet its initial goal of being a Navy cargo vessel??? A380 unlike 747 still actually has a place in the future for passenger travel, for sure ain't the same for the 747 anymore in passenger and not too long cargo either.

Aeson Industries with all due respect I’d have to disagree. With higher ETOPs certifications the age of large 4 engine passenger aircraft is coming to an end. Aircraft like the 777x and A350 are slowly taking over this role. Biggest mistake Airbus engineers made I feel was not making the A380 easily modifiable to a freighter. Of course all it takes is money but it will still be hard to compete with the design of the 748F with its unique front loading door.

Captain Chemtrails The problem is that Airbus invested way too much into the A380 after they were warned about the poor market of the A380 future. European Taxpayers have taken care of the rest. A miscalculation in the market like this when invested so much is enough to kill an entire Company, it’s a risky move

@@CaptainChemtrails I mean the issue is with Aviation that Twin engines themselves are about to peak. After 777-10 assuming we get to that need in 1-2 years time that will mark one of the longest twins imo possible, Airbus will also make a similarly long a350 variant most like to compete but that really I don't see them going any longer than that. Airports especially as environment activists, declining fossil fuels and more airport curfews which are still rising increase means less slots at airports aswell as ofc airports costs which are still high and could easily be higher by then. Come the time a 777-10 actually is needed then something else that can carry pax higher than that also wouldn't be far off needed by a year or so after. Lets remember Air travel is always on the grow it has bumps like this current season but always picks up. We've only seen a decline of 1.2% in 2009 ever since its been a rise. Part of A380s issue was Airbus not understanding the fact it wasn't actually a 747 competitor, A340 was that, A380 Was infact its own competition meant to come out when engine manufactures could produce engines that were efficient enough for both twin engines and quad double deckers to use even when at half pax. Recently they are eyeing a freighter version which shows Airbus hasn't shelved the A380 completely as it would have been straight up rejected if they hadn't kept the plans or still eyed the prospects, same goes for the A380 not being completely lost unless we get engines that can power double decker planes in the next 5 years which doubt we will however for sure by 2025-2030 will need.

Johnny Wynn Same could be said about Boeing when they developed the 747 in a time when the rest of the industry was aiming for competing SSTs. If the 747 had failed initially it could’ve easily killed Boeing at the time too.

The nose loading door on the 747f seems such a brilliant idea. Wouldn't surprise me if this feature alone keeps the plane in service for years longer than would normally be expected.

The 747 Freighter is what will keep Boeing going amidst their 707/737 Max screw up, unless the Max totally rolls them over, in my opinion.

Always love the 747. In passenger experience, however, A380 is truly supreme! Sad to see both them falling into the victim of the pandemic. Our kids will only be able to imagine double decker intercontinental flights.

They really aren't victims of the pandemic. Four engine jetliners were on their way out before anyone heard of covid 19. Because of advances in aviation technologies, twin jets are more than capable of handling modern air travel without having to maintain four engines. All the pandemic did was hasten the departure of the 747, A340 and A380 from the skies. (Sigh)

It’s a beauty. I always loved the 747 through the ages. I didn’t like the Airbus A380 but it’s grown on me and is a miracle of modern engineering.

As a former employee on the -8 program it was difficult from 400 drawings to -8 once completed it was great to see I worked the whole exterior wing to wing nose to tail

@@Kelvin-ed6ce most the drawings are moved over to computer format but you do see the original drawings in it the -8 has alot of747- 400 parts on it or revised parts from various updates

I have flown on the 787 and as someone that is nervous about flying i had never felt so comfortable on a plane. You feel the turbulence less. Now whenever i see a 787 i smile. Such a wonderful aircraft.

Any way my first ever long haul flight as my family would go to Spain anyway Dec 3 2018 I went with tui to cun 787-800 and it was so good I stayed awake the whole flight there and back on way it was 8 hours flights as I had 120 tailbwind btw it was from bhx

The 747 has a distinctive iconic shape. It’s a trademark. The A380 is just a big plane. I was a teenager when the Queen was introduced. Now I’m In my 70s. I think it’s wonderful. Many years ago at an air show I saw one with the first space shuttle mounted on top of it. Nothing ever looked like it before it was introduced and nothing will look like it in the future. Apparently it will be around for many more years. Great video! Thanks!

Ironically, it's that distinct shape that's caused problems for it in recent years. Lufthansa for example looks like they won't be upgrading their 747-8s with their new cabin product because the curves of the 747 and upper deck make it very difficult. The 747 really was a glorious plane, but it really is fairly obsolete now.

747 will always be the queen, such a beautiful and graceful jet, its success story only serves to reinforce its majesty. The A380, while no doubt an impressive piece of engineering, can't hold a candle to the icon that is the 747. I always hoped BA would have ordered the 747-8i over the A380...i guess it's hand was forced by its main European competitors, even then LH ordered some for themselves. A fleet of 30 odd 747-8s would have ensured BA flew the 747 for another 20 years. The long 747-8f is a great looking cargo hauler as well. Personally my favourite 747-8 liveries are the Qatar Airways BBJ version, and the Nippon Air Cargo freighters. 747 baby, yeah...yes, even Austin powers had one hahaha

In fact, the increasing use of air cargo has kept the 747-8F line going and has also kept the 767 and 777 lines going with 767-300F and 777F models.

747 line is so slow it would take a lot to stop it. A big reason why the 767 keeps going is also because of the KC-46. Of course increase in cargo helps a lot.

Exactly! Cargo and the possibility to do cargo conversions is key to the 747's continued success, compared to the A380! If Airbus had designed the A380 to be meaningful to use as a freighter, I think it would have been a greater success with the flagship carriers, because they could trust that they could sell them further down the line, if they became unprofitable for passenger flight.

I find it so sad the A380 program is coming to an end. I still remember being 12 year's old and going to see it at Farnborough in 06. Was so excited to see it and it just saddens me that it's all coming to an end.

About 55 years ago, some engineer at Boeing said, "you know, we should design this thing so that it can carry freight, too." Now that everybody's stuck at home ordering off Amazon, there are 747s all over the skies and the A380s are all parked in the desert. I hope that engineer got a bonus or something.

There is an aircraft service facility in Goodyear, Arizona. I live several miles west of there. They have a bunch of old airplanes they salvage to work on other planes that come in. One plane in their inventory is a 747. It was pretty fun to discover that thing sitting out there. It also means they are capable of servicing 747s. Well, one time, I was walking through a parking lot to a Lowe's, and I heard jet engines to the east. So, I turned to see the aircraft, and it was a 747. The pilot decided it was a good idea to do laps around the shopping center. After a dozen or so laps, the plane went east again, and presumably landed at the service facility. It was very interesting to discover they had been working on one, and very exciting to see a 747 fly. I had never seen one in the air before, and I was lucky this one was so low. It was fun, and very impressive, by which I mean loud.

Superb explanations, details and HD footage Coby :-) Thank you for explaining the opposing philosophies--involving two of everyone's favourite Heavies/ Supers, the 380 and our 'Queen'... and how the ultra-long-haul 787, and others, slot into global scenarios. My heart and head are always with the B747, in all its historic iterations, while still hugely appreciating the A380. The composite 787 still has a journey of materiel validation before it's completely accepted. For us isolated Aussies, QANTAS 787s currently fly a new 'Kangaroo Route'... one stop Sydney, Darwin, London... in substantially less hours than I first took to fly to London on a QANTAS 747-238 in the'80s, which then stopped at both Singapore and Bahrain.

I flew a Lufthansa 748 back in OCT 2013-the jet was brand spanking new at the time? One of my best aviation experiences. For that reason alone I will always have a special place in my heart for the Boeing 747. Very good video and I subscribed to your channel.

All planes? Perhaps just the large commercial passenger jets, and cargo planes, esp The Guppy and The Beluga. The Dreamlifter reminds me of a massive flying hotdog. The B-1, B-2, SR-71, and fighter jets surely don't look like whales.

I always swore by the 747 - and I still do - but recently in October I had to fly from DC to Dubai and got to fly on one of Emirates' A380's and I have to say I was pleased walking away from it. I love the ample space you get walking around inside.

I like your old “studio” better. I work for UPS who from my understanding have the last remaining orders of the 747-8. I don’t think they will be taking any more orders before discontinuing. We still have 13 we are waiting on. I’m excited to be part of the end of the era of the Queen of the Skies.

there is a chance that UPS is also waiting for other airlines to drop there 747-8 i so that they could buy those up much cheaper. that's is what CargoLux is doing. if only to use the parts of those in there cargo version. (i don't know if you can retrofit the nose cargo door in to a 747 i version)

Interesting video but there are two incorrect statements in the video. First, the A380 did not serve any customers in 2005. It first flew in 2005 and didn’t start carrying any passengers till a few years later while it went fortification testing and production problems. Second, the video talks about the A330 NEO coming into play in 2018 to compete against 787 which isn’t true. The video completely disregards the A-350 which was Airbus’s response to the 787.

You left out the 4-engined A340 which was also a try by Airbus to compete with the 4-engined 747 but clearly lacked the capacity. I think Airbus got its program on the rails again with the A220, A350, and the NEO options of the A330 (as you mentioned) and the A320 series. Now they cover a whole slew of capacity and range with better fuel economics.

A340 was not a 747 competitor. It was more of an MD-11 competitor. Also it’s engines were a compromise after the intended supplier pulled out. The a340-600 was more of a 747-200 replacement. Btw. The a330 and 340-200/300 are variants of the same aircraft, never mind the number of engines, intended for different missions.

The sales number of the 747-400 declined rapidly after 2002 and the passengers version last delivery was in 2005. The main reason for this is probably the 777-300er, but they still sold around 100 A340-600 in the 7-8 years it was offered.

When 340 was developed there were still strict ETOPs rules, which forbid to use 2 engined aircraft on routes over oceans, where Boeing had the 747 and others had tri jets. After A340 was on market, ETOP rules were changed, and today you can fly almost every route (maybe excepted some routes over the pacific) with a 2 engined aircraft. So the 340 is a aircraft developed for criteria of the past, and of course the more efficient 777 kicked it out of the market.

My family has a long history with Boeing. My mother helped build the tail turrets on the WWII B17s in Seattle, before she went into the Women's Army Air Corp until the end of the war. One of my uncles worked for forty years for Boeing, also in Seattle. The 747 was the last project he worked on before he retired. He went from a line worker up to a Vice-President in that time. We're kind of partial to Boeing, still. As with many other major manufacturers, they've had their share of growing pains, dealing with competitors and fluctuating economies. It's not easy out there for anyone.

A380 is unreliable. Massive maintained issues. Being retired 13 years after launch. Huge corporate screw up. The A380 is no match for the 747-8 in any category. A380s will be gone in ten years. 747s will still be flying and there may, in fact, be a resurgence in sales.

both are beautiful planes but i dont think the a380 will ever come close to being anywhere near as iconic of a plane. tbh id like to see the jumbos eventually make a comeback but that would mean we would have to find hyperefficient engines that could provide even more thrust and also put current engines deemed efficient to shame hauling all that weight.

I disagree I think it has the magic for its own time. The 380 was introduced just as the world was changing after long delays. I have flown on both aircraft many times and favour Emirates 380 especially in business class it is unrivalled compared to American Airlines which do not come close ref comfort. In terms of economical positioning I wouldn’t want to be Boeing right now with all of its issues re the disastrous Max. Airbus has recently developed some amazing aircraft such as the A350 and remains untarnished by reliability issues.

I have probably flown at least 2-3 variants of the 747, including the SP, back in the 90's when UA used to fly to MNL from SFO via SEO. It was UA 808 from MNL to SFO, UA 807 SFO to MNL. Back in those days, flight attendants used to give out coloring books and flight pins to kids and even in economy, we were given toiletry bags. One of the best ones I had was from NWA!

one feature of the early 747 I loved was that even in coach the arm rests were padded. it made a world of difference on long haul flights.

My two favorite airplanes. The 727 and the 747. The -8 is amazing. My Dad flew the 747s, but not the -8's, he retired before they were developed. I flew on a A380 to Korea once, nice airplane, very comfortable. But I'm a 747 fan through and through.

747 was my favorite plane growing up in Hong Kong by Kai Tak watching them flew like crab on landing. That inspired me to be an engineer. Just imagine my thrill when I first worked on them as an engineer years later in Boeing Everett factory.

I have flown both, and once you're inside in a cramped seat it is all the same - bad. I never had the dollars to fly in the good seats. The 747 is without a doubt the most iconic plane ever made.

I’ve flown on the 744 twice, the 748 8+ times and the A350 once and out of all of them the 748 was the most comfortable. It’s large size meant that you felt less of the turbulence while it’s modern features made for an overall more pleasant experience. While I haven’t flown on a 380 yet, I’ve heard that it’s high volume of passengers leads to long boarding/deboarding times and the windows are tiny.

The A380 is undoubtedly a big failure form economical point of view but it is largely recognised as one of the most pleasant plan to fly. And I don't see why boarding would be much longer than with the 747 as the number of doors is adapted. Anyway if you want to have a chance to fly the A380 hurry because airlines are (sadly) retiring them very quickly !

I flew with A380 twice. It is a huge plane. The problem of A380 is that its wall is inclined outward so that you can't lean against it when you taking a window seat.

I have flown the A380 with Airfrance, Luftansa and British Airways , I have also flown the older 747 with KLM and the 747-8 with Luftansa. The A380 hands down was the most comfortable!. On the A380 I would walk down from the 2nd floor to the 1st and I never felt cramped like on a Single Isle plane and felt more spacious compared to 747 or 787s.

That's my exact experience of a Lufthansa A380 vs 747-400 (sadly haven't had the opportunity to fly a dash 8). Size aside, 747 is just a better aircraft.

Having flown from the US west coast to China and back about 30 times, when it comes to Boeing I'm happiest to ride a 787, followed by 777, followed by 747. But the 747, along with the 757, is the "noblest" from an appearance standpoint. A350 is also gorgeous, and I would like to fly in one if I ever get to do China again.

I was on my way to Vietnam in July 1969 when we had a stopover in Hawaii. When rolling into the terminal gate we rolled past 2 brand new 747's parked at the terminal. It was exciting to see such a humungus airplane anywhere!

I love the 747 but the A380 is a nicer plane to fly on in my opinion. Unless you're in seat 1A on the 747 the A380 is going to be a better plane

The only problem with boeing to day is this: When are they going to correct the errors of the 737-MAX-8 or 9 MCAS programming code so that it becomes safe to fly that again?

An interesting video. I worked at Boeing for 21 years, retiring in 2009. I never worked in airplane production but I did attend three roll-outs in my time there, the 737-800 and the 777, and the 787. Of those the 777 roll-out was the most memorable because we actually got to talk to many of the engineers who worked on the design. I remember standing under a 777 while I had a conversation with one of the engineers who worked on the wheels of the landing gear. He was so proud of the work he had contributed and talked about the features of the wheels and what they were capable of.

My father was one of the 747 engineers under Joe Sutter and I started my aviation career on the 747-400. The 747 is in this families DNA!

Thanks for your comments. Looking at what's been happening at Boeing in recent years, it's refreshing to know that the company can still get something right. And yes, I do know that many of the decisions Boeing did right date from the late 1990s, before the bean-counters shoved out the engineers. But Boeing did at least stick with that strategy of leading Airbus to make a major blunder.

I love the Queen of the Sky. Around 1983 she was parked at the FBO at McCarren Airport Las Vegas. We had flown in on my partners Bonanza and tied it down. Parked behind us was the original 747 (she is now in Seattle at the Museum of Flight) . In Las Vegas engines were protected from dust and dirt with foam, thick plastic and plywood covers. We individually climbed inside the massive engine cowlings - cameras ready of course. I found climbing up inside the landing gear to be an almost hypnotic experience in the marvels of exceptional American innovative engineering. Few (me) outside of the aircraft industry has had this awe-inspiring experience. Imagine, just like an Atlas Saturn 5 Rocket, Mercury, Gemini, Appollo, and the LEM, this gear was designed using early computers, slide rules and by simply amazing engineers who had that special "IT"

I remember my first flight on a 747: 1970, TWA, NY to London. One class of service as I recall. I sat near the front of the aircraft so that on takeoff I could crane my neck and look back on the rest of the aircraft during climb-out. Yes, I could see from about the eighth row all the way to the back -- and it was a very impressive sight. That is all I remember, except that after we landed at Heathrow I walked around to the front of the aircraft (there was no jetway) to take a picture.

There's also the issue of noise. A Boeing 747 eats through the airline's noise quota at airports much faster than an A380.

The last passenger 747 was delivered in 2017 to Korean air, after that, orders for passenger 747s were relegated to military and government use. I don’t see a world government, other than us of course, placing orders for it. Though if they need a plane to carry cargo in times of crisis, the 747 is it.

I'm going to miss the A380. I've flown on it a few times, and it was _smooth_ from start to finish. There was barely any turbulence at all, whereas with smaller planes, turbulence was as normal as the sunrise.

Sounds neat and sweet but there’s one variable you haven’t addressed that could have changed everything: if Boeing had gone ahead and produced the Sonic Cruiser as they had intended to do in the early 2000s. After that program got axed the 787 was actually Plan B.

I wouldn’t say that was entirely true. With ever more limited flight slots they planned for a hub system which several of the Arabian carriers utilise. Advanced avionics and composite materials especially in the A220 which is mainly built here in N.I with our state of the art composite process.

Ya, you're right. The 380 is a VERY impressive plane. I've flown both business and economy and both classes are comfortable. Nobody wants a 4 engine behemoth nowadays though.

Yes, I agree. It is an exceptional aircraft to fly on, which offers a great cabin experience especially in first and business class. However, the high operating costs and logistics involved served as "red-tape" for airlines lacking the required equity (unlike Emirates). This is what resulted in the few initial orders of the aircraft. Moreover, in my opinion, Airbus was too bent on creating their version of the 747, which made them turn a blind eye to the true demands of the travel market at the start of the present century, which involved designing twin-engine, efficient aircraft. In this respect, I think Boeing was ahead when focusing on developing the 777 and 787, which currently serve the long-haul routes of airlines operating Boeing aircraft in the most profitable manner under the current circumstances of the globe.

My first ride on a 747 was in 1971. I have loved them ever since and have been on them dozens of times, mostly to Asia. I can't tell you how much I love and respect that plane. I have been on a 380 a couple of times and must say they are nice, but they don't give me the chill I still feel when I walk up to the gate and see the "queen."

Very good and unique comparison I get it you're trying to say the A380 looks like a pregnant whale sometimes things can get too big prom and aesthetic standpoint anyway and I guess from practicality also thinking about it. It's hard to make any money flying a jet that big unless it's filled to the Max and that's a tall order

Completely disagree. Not a fan in the slightest of his looks if that matters to you but that's not even the main issue. I could completely do without him showing his face at all. That's why I don't really watch this channel and just stick to DJs Aviation and Simple Flying. The main issue is that I'm not here to watch some dude get off at the thought of making the video about him; I'm watching these videos and here because of my love for airplanes and aviation. Show me more footage of these engineering marvels that we call airplanes, not your dumb face that has nothing to do with the contents of the video much less add any substance to a video about aviation. But the latter part of that last sentence is the reason I decided to watch this anyway as it showed up on my feed despite how negatively I feel about this guy's videos and constant need to make it about himself by putting the focus on himself instead of the aviation content; I love all things aviation.

As a passenger I loved flying on a 747 right up until my first flight on an A380. The A380 won me over instantly. I have no doubt this will probably generate a lot of hate comments.

As a young lad I was curious about that upstairs area. There was a curtain blocking my way but being little and very young I was able to swiftly get around it and quickly dart up the stairs. Greeting me was a lounge area with some typical seat belt equipped seats and also some little round tables. Wow! I went back down and invited my sister to join me upstairs. We took our complimentary deck of cards upstairs and played some games. We were the only ones there. A magical time. I still have my meal menu - it was printed on embossed multi-colour card which also has bronze gilding too. I also have the souvenir postcards and the gold stick pin with the airline's mascot / logo.

As a child, I was watching the very first test flight of the Boeing 747 on TV watching King 5 news. Then I heard a roar, I then ran outside and saw it fly over my house. It was a low flyover. It was so huge. Loved that plain ever since. I never have flown on one but Oh my I love that plain. Its shape is so different from other aircraft, It will always be the queen of the skies! Sad to see it stop production.
