Airline upgrades have ZERO to do with who you are or your performance or gender or political beliefs. It is simply seniority. The only reason she never became captain on the 747 is because of the day she was hired and her desire to fly the 747. She'd likely be a super senior captain on a United 737 since those airframes and more widely available and have a higher turnover rate.

My childhood home sat near the end of the Paine Field/Snohomish County airport runway. The Boeing plant was at the opposite end. When the inaugural flight of the 747 occurred we watched it take off on the TV and then ran out onto the driveway to see it fly low over our home. It was so huge that it boggled the mind that it could stay in the air. Our home has been bulldozed over along with most of the neighborhood and deep forest and now the Queen of the Skies is gone. She was a beauty.

Way back.... in the time before time... we lived in Wichita, Kansas.. my dad worked for Boeing... He came out to the Seattle area in 1966 on a traveller.. to do work for Boeing out here... it was to work on the new thing.. the 747... and when he came back to Wichita.. they were building most of the parts in Kansas and then shipping them by train to Seattle. They built special train cars to carry the parts... They were larger than regular cars and had a weird shape.. much like the planes themselves.. and on the outside it said.. ANOTHER 747..... my dad put his suggestion in the suggestion box... and for the second time... they took his suggestion and ran with it. He suggested that they add... ... 'from the Wichita division'...... and it was on every car after that...

For anyone who really wants to fly on a 747: BA's don't retire until 2024. QFs will likely retire around then as well, along with DLH's -400s. Air China, Korean, and Lufthansa all purchased the 747-8, and should retire it for another 20 years or so.

Interesting thing about Airbus, they built the A310 which would now be perfect for transatlantic flight requirements of today (medium sized widebody with decent range - and aesthetically beautiful as well) - but back then airlines were restricted to the one hour limit for twin engine overwater operations. Now it would be no problem...except Airbus doesn't make the 310 anymore.

Regarding 747 Hawthorne productuon from LA Times: Northrop Corp. won a Boeing subcontract to produce the plane’s fuselage panels in 1966. The company’s Hawthorne plant made the basic fuselage assemblies, while another facility in Ventura built the structure that connected the fuselage skin with the wing. Plants in Anaheim and Long Beach produced the plane’s flooring. In 1969, the Hawthorne plant employed 5,000 workers, as well as an additional 2,400 who were indirectly involved in 747 production.

@davidhoffman1278
@davidhoffman1278 6 жыл бұрын
JF , So? The original B747 was derived from the USAF C-X competition that produced the C-5. The first three proposals Boeing made to the airlines were a passenger version of original high wing double deck cargo plane, then a mid-wing version, and then a low wing version. All double decks very similar to the A380. Why no double deck the way the A380 is? Much more primitive evacuation slide technology at the time. The airlines did not think any passengers could live while attempting to evacuate from an upper deck, so they told Boeing to forget about passenger seats in the upper deck. Boeing shrunk the upper deck into a lounge. The flight deck had to remain where it was for the freighter version's nose loading door.

I still don't get your point, why compare the 747 to the a380? they're both on different leagues, 747 can go passenger and cargo but the a380 can't because it'd make more profit as a passenger plane than a cargo plane, don't forget that the entry of a380 signaled all airports around the world to dramatically enhance and expand all terminals and services for the plane. it's crazy to think you guys fighting over 4 engined planes when twin engines are running the business.

I concur, a well done tribute by the journalist who understood the entire history of the 747. It is amazing my entire life, the 747 has reigned queen of the skies being a kid of the 70s. My many years globetrekking as young adult the 747 was the aircraft to Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, South Pacific and Hawaii. Thanks to the 747 and United Airlines, I flew into the once iconic Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport, with its world famous checkerboard approach to runway 13. Such a historic masterpiece of American technology thanks to Joe Sutter, father of the 747 and WW2 veteran. Always will be fondly remembered thankful my generation grew up knowing the 747. The 747 changed the world as we know it, facilitated free market economies and democracy.

Interestingly, the plane that will truly replace the 747 will be the upcoming derivative of the 777, the 777-9. Why? Because by the time the 777-9 enters service in 2020, airlines around the world will start the replacement cycle of replacing their 777-300ER fleets, and the 777-9 is well-suited for this purpose.

People used to say that how a plane so big can fly? A USA’s 747 did it. But, people had no idea what the Russians had in plan. Years and years went and they built one huge aircraft with ‘6’ engines, super long wings and body length, with a take-off weight up to 600 TONS! That’s right it’s the Antonov 225 Mriya. Built from the 80’s and until now it’s working hard this year. Owned by the Ukraine it shows a difference of an invention between different continents. I could talk more about that and different range aircrafts but hey, I guess you know what I mean. :P

Great tribute, but s ort of a misleading special. For people who aren’t entirely familiar, it’s the 747-400 (aka: “744” not “747”) that is being decommissioned as a passenger jet in US airline carriers. However, the 747-8, the new 747 (“748”) will be in service for a long time with Lufthansa airlines as a passenger jet, not to mention Cargolux will be operating freight 744’s for a few more years. I believe KLM and British Airways will also be operating 747-400’s for a number of years more. This video makes it seem like 747’s are gone from the skies, but that isn’t true at all and won’t be for a while, as many 744’s and 748’s will continue to fly over the United States, particularly the northeast, to service other international airlines.

That's the thing, I thought Boeing was still producing updated brand-new airliner variants of the 747 (-800 and -900 variants) which weren't more than a decade old, so I'm REALLY surprised that they're being phased out as an entire airframe, and not just older sub-models. That pilot they interviewed is entirely correct, though: if any pilot has ever told you they've never wanted to fly a 747, they're lying to you. :) In particular, I always wanted to try my hand at flying a 747 through the approach to Kai Tak, the old Hong Kong International Airport that apparently closed decades ago. :)

The 747-400 passenger jet will always be my favorite, especially Delta’s and I hope to see the 400’s in the sky for a while longer. I wish Delta kept theirs or replaced it with the 800. Oh well.
