I find it really sad how many people in the years 1997-2002 weren’t aware of how much Layne Staley was struggling behind the scenes. People were aware of his drug addiction but didn’t know how bad it really was.

I was 17 in 1991 and remember everything in this video like it was yesterday. It was a great time to be alive and young. Unfortunately those days are long gone and seems totally unrecognizable to the world we now reside in.

The 90s was so real. I’m a young gen xer & a lot of heartbreak happened back then. A lot of our parents was drug addicts & we was basically getting it how we live. 94 was a horrible year for also. My mom died 4 mths after Kurt. A lot of my generation had no choice but to grow up fast. Alternative music & the hiphop that came out back then was the soundtrack of our lives. It was how a lot of us kids felt back then. I honestly love AIC, Nirvana, Pearl Jam & Soundgarden. I have a deep appreciation for them & wish everyone who passed were still alive growing old like the rest of us.

I'm glad you decided to cover Shannon Hoon. He often gets forgotten when people talk about the great singers of that era due to Blind Melon's career being so short, but his death is one of the biggest losses of that era. Blind Melon was one of the most talented and cohesive bands out there. They were on the verge of something great, but it wasn't meant to be. Shannon's death is one of the toughest for me. He was such a talented singer and songwriter, and he is all but forgotten by most people. It sucks.

I am a former addict, and I have personally known 12 people that have died from drug related causes. Four of them were close friends or family members, and I lost them to four different drugs. When you step back and take a look at the path of destruction that drugs have taken through our society, there is no better example to be found than 90's rock. Nearly all of the bands have been impacted by drugs to one degree or another, and very few of them even survived through the 90's. An entire musical revolution was annihilated by drugs. I remember when Layne died. My best friend and I were huge Alice in Chains fans, and we did our own little private memorial. We got high and listened to the music. There is so much sadness and loss that you get numb to it after a while. I wish there was some way to eliminate drugs or at least make them safer, and reduce the toll they take on society. Unfortunately, that's nothing more than a pipe dream.

It's not just the 90s, drugs took some of the best parts of the 60s music scene ... Janis Joplin, Henderix, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Keith moon , cass Elliot , Elvis and more that survived the decade but eventually succumbed to addiction I think instead of the decades, the music scene as a whole shows the enormity of the havoc drugs wrecked

Absolutely the best music era ever. It is so unbearable that so many beautiful people were lost . Substance abuse is always blamed but it is the symptom of depression. The bravest thing you can ever do is ask for help but it is also the hardest.

I grew up during the Grunge era and I have an extremely large music collection. When I heard about the death of Shifty Shellshock a couple of weeks ago, I decided to go through my collection and see how many bands had at least one member that has died. I focused only on rock acts that came out between 1990-2005. Of that group, I counted 25 bands that have a lost a lead singer, and 48 that have lost at least one member. One lost 2 lead singers, and 5 bands have lost multiple members. So much great music came out during that era, but it died because none of the bands survived. Of the major bands from my era, only Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls have survived intact without having a breakup or extended hiatus. It's crazy.

Amazing video! I've lived in Seattle my whole life so these bands hold a special place in my heart, especially Layne Staley as my Father was friends with his half brother on his dad's side. Please make a part 2 😁

You can sum up the tragedy of the 90's simply by discussing the top 5 bands (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots). Four of the have lost the lead singer, and the fifth was formed by members of a band that lost a lead singer. Two of them have lost more than one member. All of them were suicides or drug related. It's heartbreaking.

When you read Lanegans book, you understand the desperation and darkness wrapped around the addictions: Lice, scabies, abscesses , homelessness and the worst part is that they didn't have to suffer like they did . Top of the world and they fell to the bottom. God bless them all

He didn't pull the trigger. The amouny if Heroin in his system he would have died with the needle in his harm, The note was a retirement note. He wanted out of Nirvana and wanted to do a Solo acoustic record. The shotgun had birdshot pellets in it to scare off people from his house. The last 4 lines on the note were added on. The note was in Black ink and the RED pen had no fingerprints on it. 2 needlemarks- 1 on his Left and one on his Right arm. He was dead and the gun was put there later.
