It's sad this isn't more popular. It sold very, VERY poorly in the 90s. In fact, they sold almost no copies. There's 12 episodes & we only got ONE in english. This is a crime against anime & VHS fans alike. Kenny lauderdale takes a look at a retro anime series that's famous in Japan, but unknown everywhere else. Shonan bakusozoku was released partially in the 90s as bomber bikers of shonan, but never went past the first part which is a shame. I cover the circumstances surrounding this delinquent series & why it's stuck on VHS, & touch on some of the spinoffs of this Japanese series as well. Less of an anime review & more of a series analysis / retrospective. Currently there's efforts to translate it into english by fansub groups so we're hoping that pans out.

it's so crazy. i started riding motorcycles and now i've gotten into embroidery because of it a lot of biker gangs have emblems, and they wear them proudly. but where did all of those emblems come from? someone had to design and sew them biker gangs and embroidery are deeply connected. they got deep roots in both japan and america through WWII i felt like i could connect with my heritage by blending the two cultures i've been raised with in designing an embroidery for my own jacket i ride solo though, so it's an emblem representing just me

I was at Otakon (the one that was held at Penn State back in the 90s), when Robert Woodhead explained why and how he brought this over. It was an experiment, and he got the rights (at least for the episodes on the single tape) as a "round up" on another license fee (he said to the next increment of $10,000 but he didn't say what was the original show he was licensing). He said he had turned a profit, but the demand hadn't been there to do the others (he was already doing all of Urusei Yatsura, one crazy project at a time). He joked that he hoped it would catch on with American biker gangs, who would demand more "Bomber Bikers", Loudly..

@bruh drake no worries, dude. No one could predict the "return" of anime VHS or just VHS in general. Mainly, the fanbase likes bad horror movies from the 80's, which is cool. Just not my thing. I just like all the wacky cuts and dubs of something like Dagger of Kamui becoming Revenge of the Ninja Warrior. A lot of folks on my "old school" anime Facebook pages found recently that Techno Police was an inspiration to Bubblegum Crisis. Fun stuff like that. Plus, Celebrity Just for Kids tapes are fun. This is easy enough to fix. 1. Plump out 30,000 yen or roughly 280 dollars for the BDs. 2. Learn Japanese, or beg/pay others to translate it for you. 3. Do the sort of things we know about but won't say. And there you go. Oh wait, did I say easy? But yeah, even today there's strange gaps in what's subbed and available and what's not, due to all manner of reasons. This is especially weird when you're into robot anime and such, where we only recently in the last few years got all of Tomino's directed work (in regards to just robot anime of course, there's a fair bit of his work prior to him starting on such shows still in limbo). It's only been in the last few years that we've had releases of Mazinger (with the original and Great) and there's still tons of stuff not only unreleased in the West but unsubbed (even if you take crabsticks/HK-subs as subbed which no one should) so if you wanted to grab JP releases (and pay that huge amount of money), you can't.

Then there's also something like SF Saiyuuki Starzinger, one of Leiji Matsumoto's lesser known works as a writer, which was a clusterfuck outside of Japan. Being a "journey to the west anime, but in space" they decided to rebrand it to be about the three musketeers and call it "Spacekateers" instead in a package show called Force Five in the US, of which I'm aware of a single upload exists (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqKxkq2ia6yGe8U). Similarly, it was aired as El Galactico alongside Steel Jeeg, Gaiking and Magne Robo Gakeen in another package show called Festival de Robots. In Italy it was dubbed and released in its entirety, but in Scandinavia Sweden got episodes 5 through 25 and then the final episodes on VHS, while Finland based their release on that, but the final VHS is exceedingly rare, so for all intents and purposes Finland basically did not get the ending. In the UK it was released in some form as Sci-Bots, but I have no clue what the deal with that one is. Currently there exists a "Starzinger movie collection" that you can buy on Amazon, but it's a weird English dub directed by William Winckler that just compiles various episodes into movie format (episodes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 for the first, 36, 49, 50, 51 and 64 for the second and 65, 66, 70, 72 and 73 for the last one). Starzinger is by no means a very special show, but surely they could've done better than make one character's line be "Who let the dogs out woof woof woof!" in that release. As far as subs go, ILA did subs for about 20 episodes at some point, and had the script for the rest but never got around to finishing it. Then TSHS picked it up again years later, doing touch-ups on ILA's release, but I have not seen many updates on that since the 11th episode. It's gotten to the point where I just watched raw italian dub of the show and tried to piece together the plot with a dictionary.

@@farout_tech have you heard about Captain Harlock and the queen of the thousand years? In the US Harmony Gold decided to import Harlock, but it had too few episodes for sindication, so they mixed it with Queen Millenia. Not only it makes no sense (Harlock is a self contained future, QM is set in 1999 about the earth being invaded) but it also had like 20 episodes too many. So they did a free mixture, cutting first and making the dialogues and plot later. It's a hilarious mess.

@@canalsincontenido Yeah, I've heard about that one, but more due to Harmony Gold's shenanigans with Robotech which is an equally amazing mess.

@@farout_tech Robotech is pristine in comparison. They didn't even get Leiji Matusmoto's name right in the opening, characters die and come back to life in the same episode (because they though they were different people), voice actors get confused on which character they are, and of course, they try to set Harlock in 1999 as some sort of space military trying to stop the villain from a different anime. HG went mad with power, I guess.

I wish more old anime was more readily available. Anything made earlier than the mid-90s starts to drops off the deep end with scarcity. But I generally enjoy old stuff a lot more than most main-stream anime out today. This sounds a million times more interesting the Fire Force or Attack on Titan to me.

As soon as I knew what this was about I paused this and found the subs scattered throughout different sites all the way to ep 11. As someone who loves Yankii stuff it kills me that the genre isn't more popular in the US since they largely got their style and music influence from us as well as that "bad boy biker who does what he wants" attitude that Japan loves to apply to Americans, that we just do whatever the fuck we want. And they're right for the most part. Anyone who loves Yankii stuff and is willing to learn some hiragana, check out the Kenka Bancho Series of games. it's exactly like the Yakuza games(bar Like a Dragon) except instead of yakuza you are Yankii students who get into fights and get into insult matches, followed by more fighting and romance options.

I lived in japan for just a bit over a year between 2012-2013 and that was enough for me to grow quite familiar, even before that I remember trying to get my hands on the manga after I had my yankee manga phase as a teen (kyou kara ore wa/ crows/worst/clover/shonan junai gumi/ gokusen) after a Japanese friend recommended it but I couldn't find it translated in any of the languages I spoke at the time. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't gotten more recognition since, at least the first 6 volumes appear to have been fan translated then dropped since then.

when I was a teenager there was this local vhs shop owned by a family (not a big box name brand thing) anyways they had a huge selection of anime and after I found your channel some years ago I started feeling like a dummy because a lot of the rare anime (including this one) where on the shelves there and I wish I had known then what you have shown me in the last few years because the place closed down and all that anime has disappeared somewhere. It had a great name for a store too, it was called "vidiots".

Alright, firstly, that was a fantastic way to end your video. Putting your channel avatar in the Warning: Bear sign was brilliant! Secondly, fantastic video. Thanks for sharing another awesome-looking series you've found. It really does look a fun, crazy watch - I mean, vampires!? I just can't a handle on Japanese biker anime; one minute they're _Wild 7_ and violent and gritty and played mostly straight. The next they're this. I guess ya just never know what you're gonna get, but it's almost certainly gonna be a great time. Hopefully someone like Animeigo like you said - or fellow "old anime connoisseur" distributors like Discotek/Eastern Star or Nozomi/Rightstuf - end up hunting the rights to this down someday and subbing it up for a release.

I despise the fact that modern streaming services only bring currently airing shows when they could also bring back some classics from the '90s, 80s and beyond that would be just as popular as seasonal shows today with some clever marketing. I highly recommend the streaming service RetroCrush. They don't have the greatest selection in the world but for people who are willing to give retro anime a shot, they're an excellent starting point as they have the most popular 80's/90's anime like Kimagure Orange Road, Urusei Yatsura movie 2, City Hunter etc. complete with Blu-ray quality.
