I spent most of my life going to this theme park, with little to no changes made in the last 10 years, it's spiralled so quickly because people tired of its lack of new anything ever and when they start charging more for entry and the rides feel like they could fall apart at any second, it's a recipe for disaster, not to mention the fact that the majority of grounds staff looked between 16-18... Don't get me wrong, I loved pleasure Island and it was upsetting when it closed... However, its was obvious why.

I held a season pass for this place, it was literally walking distance from home as a teen, I was even there with my cousin the day the gates didn't open and the staff were laid off (your facts were a little off, there wasn't a sign on the gates, there was literally no information until about an hour after the gates were supposed to open and that information came from the angry teenagers that'd just lost their jobs). It was a great place to go and hang out with friends for the day but the entrance fees kept rising and nothing new was being opened. By the time they actually brought some new rides to the park they'd killed off the trade with the costs. p.s. you forgot The Gravatron, a simple ride yes but by far the crowd favorite and the one I miss most fondly. p.s.s. NOW I'VE GOT THE TINKABOO THEME IN MY HEAD! Thanks!

Anthony Mcdonnell Totally agree there, and with no real warning either. I was part of a campaign to save it back then. Very sadly she got her wicked way and left that park totally trashed. Don’t like her general business strategy, even at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Her last victim was the beloved wooden Wild Mouse. Haven’t been back there since. No respect for her punters IMO.

That's life! So sad. Many places that we enjoyed as a kid, close. Almost nothing last forever... Times continue to change and those parks and places suffer the consecuences and ultimately need to close. Now Disney is still going strong, the most visited park in the world. So I can safely say they will last for veeeeery long (especially their 2 resorts in USA).

So much to do with why these places fail seems to be location. A lot of the theme areas, rides & throwbacks to it's time as a zoo that this park had seem very similar to Chessington's. Tommy Tinkaboos Sweet Adventure especially, that's the twin ride to the old Professor Burp's Bubbleworks that used to be at Chessington's. In the days when I used to go Chessington's was small, some places were tatty & all of the animals really looked like they wanted to be somewhere else. They never had the biggest or best rides, haven't rebranded in over 30 years now, but one thing they always got right was the atmosphere & considering where they're located, on the doorstep of London with good local transport, means that they always have visitors all through the season. It wouldn't matter if you went in April, August, or October, there were always huge crowds. I guess not being so dependent on holiday crowds makes a huge difference.

When it was £7.00 entry, you could get in for 50% off if you collected (I think 6.1 of each flavour) lids of a drink called Punika. Many brands used to trial products in the Grimsby / Cleethorpes area, something to do with the right social mix (rich, poor, young, old etc). This drink was on trial but even with the offer, it never took off. I remember Ariel wash tablets being trialled there and possibly Sunny Delight juice. Nowadays Cleethorpes still has some random things for the UK at least, a drive thru Taco Bell being one.

The sad thing i see is the amount of space for development. The problem with theme parks in general is a lot have a clone of another ride. There are so many more flat rides out there that you never see In a theme park. The only flat rides that come to parks are ones that come with theming. It's the same with fun fairs a lot of them have the same 4 main rides, Twisters, Waltzer, Ski Jump and Miami.

I used to go there so often. I would only go on the Boomerang because I don’t like flat rides (except the pirate ship and the Gravitron but they were tiny). Boomerang bashed your head so much on the restraints that after going on five times in a row I’d have to take a break until my headache died down and then I’d go on it five more times and go home feeling sick. It also felt kinda janky so I was always convinced I was going to die. They were great times.

I was at the opening of the zoo in '77. There was a Planet of the Apes show & it was a really hot summer's day (hot for Cleethorpes anyway lol). I was 7 so I thought it was the real apes from the show at the time lol. After the zoo closed it was called the 'Leisure Park', which was basically just the old zoo grounds with a couple of really basic rides & a bit of a dump tbh, until the Pleasure Island people bought it & redeveloped it. The '80s were a hard time for the town with virtually zero investment in the area. Much of the reasons being the same antiquated attitude of the local council that had turned Butlin's down from developing the site back in the '50s, a decision which ended up costing the area £Millions as he decided to build the proposed camp at Skegness 30m down the coast, (allegedly he did this to spite Cleethorpes council for refusing permission), turning Skeggy from an empty agricultural area into the mid-East coast's biggest tourist destination. The reason for refusing Butlin's was that the majority of those councillors lived in the more expensive area which was closest to where his camp would be & they didn't want their nice homes potentially losing value. One somehow doubts that the fact this decision, (which ultimately had a negative effect on thousands of local residents & businesses who would have benefited enormously from a Butlin's in the town), bothered the councillors too much but hey, at least their peace & quiet wasn't disturbed lol.

because nobody's talking about it, this park had a rock afire explosion show at some point in the 90s and it's like not documented at all and i find that very interesting...

Talking of Barry Island....the Pleasure Island Gravitron ride actually began its life at Barry before residing at other parks invluding Alton Towers, Flamingoland and of course Pleasure Island. The Gravitron has now returned 'home' and is currently undergoing a facelift in time for the 2018 season at Barry Island Pleasure Park

That woman didn't want to deal with the park. If they stuck with there plans they would have done great and they still would be open she let down her father and everyone who enjoyed the park. I can tell when she talks she didn't care about the park as much as her dad did and the people who visited since it opened. It's sad very sad to see a park that could have been something great get shut down and for the people who had jobs lose them and the people who enjoyed the rides is sad and it never had to happen, If they put there heart and soul into it would have been the best place on earth. But it's too late its gone never again to be enjoyed by the people and the family that owned it couldn't be happier.

Been to haven cleethorpes many times and if you wanted to walk into town you walked past the park, gave the older kids money to visit the park and they were back half an hour later saying there wasn't any rides they wanted to go on, they would rather go to the penny arcade in the park or go swimming, had a pint in the bar at the haven end entrance,mc,cormicks I think you called it, shame it closed seaside towns need amusements and cleethorpes beach is top class goes on for miles

The stock car stadium was actually next to pleasure island on the land that is still there now and still derelict...it usually plays host to the various circuses...i live there and used to play in the abandoned zoo and on the stock car stadium :)

2 years on & the real reason for closure is its location wasn't the easiest to get to & the haven holiday resort next door had its own theme park on hire within the grounds, however there is some good news as the site has been sold but nothing has materialised & the carpark to the right belongs to haven too
