The Tunnel is located atop Moosic mountain in Jefferson Township. Constructed between 1848-1850. The tunnel was dug and blasted thru rock by black powder to a length of 755 feet. It served the loaded or heavy track, meaning the cars were loaded with Coal on its way to Hawley. It also served for passenger and freight service. A spur line was extended to Jones Lake, which was later renamed Lake Ariel. The tunnel was constructed to avoid building another Plane (Lift mechanism ) on the too steep mountain top. The tunnel was in use from 1850 to 1885. At that time the entire gravity system was eliminated and replaced with new trackage and with steam locomotive propulsion. The route was altered and the tunnel was obsolete. The tunnel is in remarkable condition 134 years after it was abandoned. The tunnel area is now part of the Lost Trails Systems pay for use program. (4x4s & motorbikes). It is on private property but foot traffic is allowed from the Mount Cobb area.

My brother and I hiked out to the tunnel today. We came up from the parking area off of Tigue Street in Dunmore. Round trip the hike was a hair under 9 miles and we ascended 1,300 feet. It's a beautiful mountain and the tunnel is great to explore. The rain and fog was heavy today.

Actually a well organized ATV club can be a good thing and keep trails maintained and free of trash.

You mention Native Americans most likely being there at rock shelter, also arrow heads. My son for years when a little boy growing up, found several arrow heads at beaches at Lake Wallenpaupack where our summer home is. The state routes and roads are all former Indian Trails and became our roads. Lenape. I loved this video.

Great video Cliff... I guess I got to start going back and watching more of your videos😩... Believe it or not last night I thought I stumbled upon this abandoned tunnel following the old rail line on Google Map... I was chatting with Mike about it, at first thinking that I might have found something no one else and stumbled across... Now, I'm realizing I got to try harder to find somewhere you haven't been😩... Great Vid WW? Are you sure Cliff Trail wasn't named after you? I always wonder how those workers dug through for that tunnel. That very hard work and moving all the loose rock. Wonder if they used black powder or not. Would seem risky with all the layered rock. Thanks Much! daveyJo

I live a few miles from there and know every inch of that mountain . The history and mountain is being ruined now from all the off road quads and dirt bikes from that the business down the road. They killed the mountain,. The hidden secret , where is Indian spring the site of Indian massacre in 1778 and the toll road operator that was near Indian springs. The springs are mentioned in the history of Lackawanna County taken from settlers diaries. Took me many years to find the spring, but i know where it is.

A very interesting hike! Cool little tunnel. I really do dislike that whole ATV scene, though. There are few things that screw up a hike worse than jerks on loud ATVs tearing through the forests and mucking up the trails.

It depends. If they're not going full bore ripping apart the ground as they go it's ok. The old culm banks near the UPS hub in Taylor, PA used to be a pretty nice hike back in the day, even with the ATV's and dirt bikers driving all around there. There were lots of mining ruins in the area too. All gone now though as Kane took over that whole area.

The tunnel area is now part of the Lost Trails Systems pay for use program. (4x4s & motorbikes). It is on private property but foot traffic is allowed from the Mount Cobb area. Lost trails maintain the trails in and around the tunnel also up by the lakes. ATV and side by side are fun and most good and respectful rider only ride on trails designated for atv use. Also hunter use then to get around state game lands, were they are allowed. Also PA and NJ both require very expensive registration (as much as a truck or car registration depending on the state) for these vehicles and in pa that registration allows access to the designated parks and lands for trails. These tunnels and trails dont fall under pa registration laws as they ate owned and maintained by lost trail.
