Exploring the abandoned NVA Flugplatz Löpten in Klein Köris, Brandenburg, Germany.
Built between 1966 and 1969, the Flugplatz Löpten was constructed as "alternative" airfield, i.e its main purpose was for training and emergency uses - hence the East German airfield only had two 2350m x 37.5m long grass runways. It was in operation from 1969 until 1990, where it served as the training ground for the East German Jagdgeschwader 7 (JG-7).
After German reunification it briefly served as a storage area for retired NVA military vehicles, and has since been left abandoned. The abandoned Flugplatz Löpten was used in the 2007 Movie "Valkyrie" (starring Tom Cruise) as a stand in for an Airfield in the Soviet Union as as as for Hitlers Wolfschanze. The tarmaced Taxiway was "restored" for the purpose of the filming and a period correct Junker Ju-52 landed on the grass runway.
The airfield has since been left abandoned again.
