I lived there twenty years ago with my mom cuz she divorced my dad, we lived in the green one that the roof was falling down on. I found out that the reason they shut it down was cause the septic was running into the tap water. I had weird experiences in the attic of that house. Scary creepy stuff

Two things, the owners charge $35 and you can go in any of the houses. And those weren’t homeless people camping. They were trout fishing. I used to live in Yellowdog. We moved in 1979. It was awesome to grow up there! Many, many fond memories!

The homes at Yellow Dog Village were built in the 1910s and 1920s to provide housing for those that worked at the mine. Yellow Dog Village closed in 2009 due to unsafe drinking water.

I disagree about the vandalism being attributed to it's proximity to Pittsburgh. I think it's more likely that local kids (from Kitanning) or more likely the culprits. When kids have nothing to do, they break windows.

Holy Yinzer, Post. You were in my backyard. I live about half an hour away in New Kensington, birthplace of the aluminum industry and original home of Alcoa. Next time you come down this way, make sure you get yourself a capicola and cheese sammitch at Primanti Brothers. By the way, loved your video about the Kinzua Viaduct. Have you ever done a piece about Titusville, Pa. and the Drake Oil Well? Fascinating history. Btw.....Knock off the cracks about Pittsburgh....we had a couple hundred thousand people in town last weekend for a pair of Taylor Swift concerts with zero shootings. It's actually a relatively safe big city.
@mkelly0x20 Жыл бұрын
Yes, Primanti's is the obligatory yinzer food to try. And yeah, Pittsburgh is pretty safe as far as cities go. And nobody is driving an hour from the city to vandalize some abandoned house. There's plenty of abandoned homes, overpasses, etc in the city to vandalize already...

In Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, the former mining town of Kramer successfully revitalized itself into the village of Stump Creek. You could buy a house then for two or three thousand. That price included the outhouse. That was back in the 1970's, though. Gruda Metals had a huge recycling center there. It's about halfway between DuBois and Punxsutawney.

I grew up in Worthington, right next to Yellow Dog. I knew people who lived there. Pittsburgh is over half an hour away (30+ miles). Nobody in the "bad" areas of Pittsburgh drives up rt 28, 10 minutes off any major roads, into random empty houses in the woods, just to break some windows. Most of the vandalization would be from people (mostly kids) local to the area, as you find happen pretty much anywhere.

Eh, 50 miles from Pittsburgh is not that close a proximity, and that town was not vandalized because of it. You made it sound like it’s in the inner city and that Pittsburgh is a bad place. Most of the old mining and mill towns in this part of the state have fallen onto hard times, and their construction was probably substandard to begin with. Company houses were built pretty basic and on the cheap, to squeeze more profit for the mine/mill owners.

Sometimes the zoning laws prohibit tearing down buildings until the buildings are completely condemned. This entices the realty companies or investors who want the property to break windows and undermine structures where they can to accelerate the deterioration.

These houses are far older than ten/thirteen years. I'd guess seventy years at least. The asbestos siding stopped being produced in the 1950's and the way the houses are constructed is reminiscent of "corporate construction" or a company owned town.
