I have never owned or used a lathe. I am retired and saw some bowl turning videos. A friend suggested I start with a mini lathe so I finally found your site. I liked how you explain things like I am a 5 year old. I like how you actually show how things are done on film. I like how you explain every little detail because for this I really need to be treated as a 5 year old. I will be watching a lot of your videos just trying to learn for now. I really appreciate your time and patience. What brands do you suggest? A friend suggested Grizzly, another just said look on ebay, one said check out harbor freight. I did not even know there were companies that built something like this! Maybe you answer these questions in your videos. Thank you anyway, I'll be watching!

Thank you Leah. You are very ingenious. I appreciate you showing folks about a wood lathe, its parts and their names and the principle behind the operation of it. I was a lucky kid, in that my Dad had a little home DIY shop and raised me in it. He traded something and got a little wood lathe and had me trained in its use, well before graduating elementary school. I made matching lamps, handles, and such. When I got married and was moving our stuff, I accidentally dropped my wifes Mothers table lamp and it busted. I stuck it together enough to measure it and glued up a chunk of wood and, with my new wife there with me, I turned a lamp base, just like the one I had broken and drilled it and put all the busted one's hardware into it and gave it to her and told her, "this one wont break !" She love it and asked how long I had been doing this type craft. When I told her I had been doing this stuff from 8 years old, she was amazed. I had a good teacher. Thanks again, Leah.

I'm a woodworker going on 3 or 4 years now. The one thing I haven't done yet is turning. I'm surprised I've gone this far in the hobby without giving it a shot. Well, my neighbor recently passed and his widow asked if I'd like to take a look at his tools. I had no idea he was a woodworker! I walk in and there sat a JET 16X42 EVS lathe. I bought it of course! I've been watching videos for a few days trying to get an idea of what I need and how to proceed. This is BY FAR the best beginning lathe/turning video I've found! Sometimes people forget that for those of us starting out we really don't know anything at all. Thanks for going over the lathe, how it works and the centers on either side. She couldn't find the centers and I wasn't sure which type to buy. I know how to get started now. Thanks!

WOW!!! I've been wanting to use a lathe for a long time. Sadly, I haven't been able to find anyone to show me (I'm a girl so God forbid I even LOOK at a guy's tool), nor found any books/videos that I felt truly helped. They were good for educating myself on how tos, safety, etc., but none that made me feel like I was ready. I stumbled on your channel when I saw your 'find tools cheap' video and loved your advice about taking a closer look. It was so refreshing to FINALLY find videos that are not only educational and highly informative, but also easy to understand, follow, and not feel stupid or talked down to. Not to mention enjoyable to watch! (I've already been watching your videos for almost three hours and it doesn't feel like it! Lol) Because of you, I finally have the confidence I need to start using a lathe. Thank you SO much! Looking forward to learning more from you. 😃

Being a wood turner I feel that your tool rest was adjusted a bit to high. Generally for most lathe tools the tool rest should be set so the cutting edge of the tool is in line with the center of the wood blank with the handle parallel as you stated. Reason: If you should get a catch, the turning wood will did deeper into the tool because the wood is still coming towards you. With the tool at the center, if you get a catch, the wood is turning away from you at that point and the less tragic it will be. A lot of videos on lathes on youtube. Appreciate you clear explanations in all you videos. Nice job.
@seejanedrill7 жыл бұрын
Hello Dwight, thanks for commenting. Interestingly, someone asked earlier if the tool rest was positioned on the center-line. I explained that it was, however, the camera angle distorted this. Nevertheless, I appreciate you explaining to the community the importance of tool rest position to prevent catches.

Hi Leah I remember in high school shop years ago in the 60's. I tried to use a lathe when the teacher wasn't around and I never had any instruction. The turning tool was pulled out of my hand very fast, it hit the cement wall and bounced back at me hitting me in the upper chest. Lucky for me I was hit with the handle end, I sure had a good sized bruise. My gosh I could have been killed. I could have been hit in the eye or throat. I sure was stupid. I never told the teacher and never used the lathe again. Just a reminder for nubees to always have instruction before attempting anything. THANK YOU Leah for all your hard work teaching. Oh by the way I was recently given a lathe and all the tools by a good friend who was moving out of state so I'll give it another try ONLY WITH INSTRUCTION. Hey a few shows on safety with a lathe, table saw, band saw ect. would be wonderful. Thanks again.

As a newb to woodworking, I absolutely love how you break things down and make it easy to understand. You mentioned a couple more advanced things, but didn't get sidetracked with those things. Awesome job! I love your personality! I look forward to learning from your videos!

Thanks again Leah,it's been years since I've been able to use a lathe... elementary wood shop,and high-school I loved it. Again and again I've always wanted to have a nice shop for myself. Maybe one day 🙂

I've been a woodworker for about 13 years but just now jumping into turning. I've watched MANY videos on KZbin on every part of the subject and, to be honest, most either assume you know all the basics or they wander off into rabbit trails. Yours was, by far, the most comprehensive, best explained, entertaining, well narrated and well filmed tutorial I have seen. I love how you don't skip basics, stress safety and most of all, show how turning is something anyone can do. Thanks!
