when he said they never raced in group B, it means Ari vatanen did not get his body back to normal fast enough because group B was ended so early, however, he dominated in group A!

timo salonen was maybe the most chilled and one of fastest drivers... sometimes if there was straight road long enough he asked co-pilot to fire up a cigarette for him :D

One of the first races was held in 1895 across France The race went from Paris to Bordeaux and back, which took exactly two days (48 hours) to complete

Thanks to Group B, Audi developed the 4x4 Quatro. This technology made Audi one of the most successful automobile manufacturers in the world, because Audi quickly began to install this technology in its production vehicles and today this technology is almost standard at Audi.

When rally stages occur, the drivers are against the clock and start at 1 minute intervals

Jean-Marie Balestre, the president of FIA (FISA back then) did get replaced eventually, in 1991, after he interfered too much in the outcome of at least 2 F1 championships in 1989 and 1990, going against Ayrton Senna and doing favors to his compatriot Alain Prost. As for Group B, I think the actual golden era of WRC was during Group A afterwards, during the 90s and the early 00s. The level of competition and popularity of the sport was incredible in that decade, especially the late 90s and early 00s.

Once you ditch the rules engineers can go crazy and you get them thinking out of the box. We wouldn't have the save cars nowadays without the madness from racing especially rallying since it is done on all surfaces.

These guys are insanely talented and pretty fearless. I tried driving some of the courses on a PC, I think I crashed within about 50 meters. My guess the reason the president of the FIA didn't want to cancel it was purely a financial reason.

The cars are seperated by a time gap judged to be enough to guarantee that a faster car behind shouldn't catch the car in front, but if the front car is in trouble or too slow, then they will be caught and passed. The co driver and driver and sometimes the TEAM walk the track and drive it slowly, taking notes......then the co driver collects all the information and writes it down in CODE. This formatted code has a name..... but my memory has gone blank. lol Anyway.......the co driver reads out the coded notes to the driver. The driver has complete cofidence in the accuracy of the information and the timing of it's delivery......if NOT, then he finds another co driver before they both die. The co driver must have total confidence and belief in the drivers skill.....as the driver is using the pace notes ( code ) to drive beyond the cars capabilities so as to win. The best rallye and race drivers always drive faster than the cars limits when necessary......or they are SLOW !!!! The champions are the ones who can consistently drive further beyond the cars abilities and the laws of physics, and stay alive.

The thing with Group B Rally, was that those cars was insane powerful for their weight and very fast, but without any assist system, it was only the car and the driver and nothing else. Today's rally cars are as fast or faster, but they have a lot of assist systems like: stearing assist, automatic power distributions and break distributions, etc. and a lot of safety system, thus now Rally cars are: the car, the driver, and the computer.

The spectators were standing at regular public roads and very often on the roads. They were super enthusiastic and felt part of the race.

After the Group B cars got banned from Rallying, they competed in Rallycross and Ice racing The Ford RS200 won the British Rallycross Championship in 1987, 1988 and 2002 The MG Metro 6R4 won the British Rallycross championship seven years in a row from 1989 until 1995, and again in 2000 and 2008 The Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 won the inaugural Trophée Andros ice racing series in 1990

Michelle didn't just win a WRC race, she won 4 and would have won the the 1982 championship if her car hadn't had so much technical problems. She came second in the championship losing by only 12 points.

There are some great irish rally on board videos you should watch and react to. Give you an idea what goes on inside the car. We have great rallying in Ireland where we close off public roads and rally on them

Rally-Racing is a time trial. There's many cars going through the course, usually separated by a determined time (at least when thry start).

group B era was only 4 years.. 3/4 of the group B era world champions were FINNISH, and after that finns more likely started to dominate in rally. of course a lot of wins and champions came earlier too :)
