I’m from Michigan and it’s weird when I hear someone say they planted an apple tree when they grow wild all over the place here! My neighbor has one and we just go pick how many we want! I make apple pies from them. You can’t beat the smell of a homemade apple pie cooking in the over on a cold fall day!

I definitely agree with you about having him tested for asthma. My son was a preemie at 31 weeks and showed similar symptoms very early on and he was diagnosed with asthma at around 2 I believe (he’s 20 now! Lol). He was prescribed maintenance meds and a nebulizer for when he flared up and it helped a lot. Hopefully whatever is going on with Asher can get figured out soon! ❤

We went through this with ny daughter, she was eventually diagnosed with asthma at about 3 years old. Nebulizer treatments of albuterol (opens airways), and pulmicort (a preventative) were the best thing for her. Helped so much! Don't be afraid of the diagnosis, it opens the door to easily get meds that helps so much, making life easier. She's 22 now and we've got it down to a science now.

My daughters asthma started as a barking like cough at night-- to the point where she would throw up on herself. It lasted awhile until she eventually started having wheezing too. Once we got on the right meds its made such a difference. Her cough from colds would last about a month and was always worse at night.

One of my twin boys is asthmatic and his coughs (as well as my own) always get scary sounding, too. I swear by mucinex and looooots of water to thin the mucus, and benedryl to take down the inflammation is his airway so it can be expelled. The coughs that are the most concerning are the high pitched ones…that means his airway is getting smaller, so taking that inflammation down is super important. Good luck, Mama.🙏🤍😷

My daughter had a croupy bark as a baby and toddler. It was so bad, people would literally remove their children from around her when she started coughing. This was even pre covid. Turned out to be asthma. She has since grown out of her asthma medication and is solid at 12. I think it would totally be worth it to take him to a pediatric pulmonologist. The difference in her cough and breathing was night and day once she went on her inhalers. Good luck.

My daughter is the same way and shes nine, any time she gets sick she gets a horrible croup like cough and none of her friends get like that. I was told it could be asthma / allergies. But the thing is when shes not sick she is perfectly fine and dosent have any signs of having asthma. Its rough! Weve tried inhalers and pretty much every trick and medicine. I noticed kids claratin seems to to help sometimes, and i think it may be something they might grow out of because it dosent happen as often as it did when she was smaller.

My middle son had that Bark like cough and he did have asthma. He also had a lot of allergies that contributed to the asthma. When he was little though, he also had ear infections that were a precursor and then the bark like cough and then full on asthma as he grew up. So I would highly recommend getting him possibly tested and checked out. For my son, the seasonal allergies would bring on the cough and then in the winter, colds would bring it on. Over time though we just knew we had his inhaler and it helped him so much. Do what calms your momma heart. It is always best to have things checked and it be nothing than to let it go and have issues.

This meant no more middle of the night trips to ER. But definitely have him checked for asthma. The way the doctors explained to me is that with Croup - they struggle to breath out. And with Asthma it's the opposite - they struggle to breath in. Or vice versa - lol ! Wishing you all the best ❤❤

My daughter who is 19 months probably has asthma but they don’t diagnose it till 5 years typically, we do a humidifier, warm showers or just sitting in the bathroom with the water on so the steam helps soothe their chest, she does have a nebulizer and an inhaler, we also get it bad when she gets a runny nose and I bought something off of Amazon called a syringe nasal irrigator, you out water in it with saline and put it through their nose with them leaning forward and it gets all the boogers out, it’s a little scary the first time because they act like they can’t breathe but it really helps

My oldest was like that and I give him warm water in the middle of the night. When sick he is a mouth breather, it dries his throat so badly and it crates a bark. He has a nebulizer but his ped agreed after it happening every time that it’s from mouth breathing. He would get so worked up that he would vomit and then he’s crying, vomiting and can’t breathe out the nose and coughing and choking on vomit from all the above. It made nights when he was sick just the absolute worst.

Omgosh…I do not miss those days. You and my daughter are the same but I remember that cough very well. Definitely look into having Asher tested for asthma because my daughter, like I said use to deal with croup all the time, ended up being asthmatic. So you are right to be concerned if asthma may be playing a role in this. Now, I’m sure there’s been some sort of medical advancements in 29 years for treating croup, however when my daughter was dealing with it, I found that the only thing that seemed to work was sitting in the bathroom with the shower running hot. That steam build up seem to break all of the mucous up that was in her nasal area and chest. Sometimes old school methods just can’t be beat. I hope this helps. I know how you feel when you hear your child cough this horrible, painful sounding cough, and all you want to do as a mommy is make it go away. You’re a great mom. Those kiddies are so blessed to have you and Justin as their parents. Prayers to all of you but mostly to your little ones that are under the weather right now. Sending love hugs and prayers❤️🤗🙏🏼

I took my oldest toddler to the doctor when her cough sounded kinda like that and she stayed sick so much longer than everyone else in our family. The doctor didn't necessarily recommend that we get her tested for asthma, but did say that she might have "more asthma-prone lungs" than the rest of the family and is just more affected by the cough and cold symptoms, and prescribed her a asthma inhaler to help with the cough. Huge improvement, toddler is a pro at using the inhaler and is also really good about advocating for when she does/doesn't need to use it. If this kind of thing keeps happening I might pursue further testing, but I'm leaning towards she will grow out of it.

My pediatrician recommended keeping some sort of soft drink with caffeine to use when I was desperate, because that helped to open up their airways. I actually had to use it a timer or two I was desperate and it did work. Also, I kept oximeter closed at all times. You can get them at Walmart or any drugstore. You just put it on, and it helps. Tell you what their blood oxygen level is. I would check with your pediatrician to see if they will test him for asthma, if they think he has asthma, they will give you a nebulizer that you can use. He has a flareup.

Both my brother and I had bad croup coughs as kids…my mom would have us sit in the bathroom in the middle of the night breathing in the hot steam from the shower until the throat tickle went away (takes a good 20 mins sometimes). I also propped myself up with pillows to sleep sitting up a bit. Because laying down made it worse. I feel for Asher because I know how frustrating it can be. We both turned out to have asthma so have him tested. Thankfully we both grew out of it as adults. Now my only issue is if I get a cough it lingers a long time… my doctor finally gave me a nebulizer for those situations and that really helps. I use it 1-2X a year at most. they make them for babies/kids and it’s often more effective for coughs than a regular inhaler. Hope he feels better soon!!

Oh goodness that cough is rough . My son had this type of cough with croup and his paediatrician had him on short course steroids and monitored. My baby is a Vlbw premmie , almost 8 months. He recovered well . He then got sick again , they swabbed him and he had rsv/covid and adenovirus at the same time . This made the cough more intense and lingered . Clear chest sound, clear on xray . Fast forward , he developed a chest infection. Fortunately - the Paeds team were monitoring him and we commenced treatment . He’s recovering now . Worth further investigation with a respiratory specialist and perhaps PCR to rule out active viral infections . That are present . It’s been 9 weeks of illness for my son. (He is now under 3 percentile thanks to the sickness delaying development- brutal )

Cold induced asthma is very much a thing. Advocate for an inhaler and potentially an at home nebulizer. This sounds like it may be helpful for you guys. Hugs to the littles.

Sounds like a croup cough. My son's been getting them and recently diagnosed with asthma. My son is 2 weeks younger than the twins. They described it as a flare up which causes the croup cough and is actually asthma. They did a chest xray and started him on an inhaler. We haven't had any issues since!

When my baby sister had croupy cough like that, my mom would take her outside, because the cold night air helps with the breathing.

Ask them to check his tonsils and adenoids. My granddaughter had that really bad cough and what appeared to be asthma. Once they removed the tonsils and adenoids she no longer has asthma.

I keep hearing that sucking on marshmallows helps with a cough. It’s the gelatin. Hope your kids feel better soon.

Not sure how helpful. My son sounded like that, we told our doctor and they prescribed a preventative inhaler. It’s helped so much! We found it got worse in March/April he was coughing so hard that he was sick :( Hope you get some news soon. X

Could it be allergies. Some grasses and plants can constrict airways and cause the croup cough. My son had allergies, which caused breathing treatments. He grew out of it though. Thank goodness.

So his cough sounds very much like croup. Croup is more inflammation of the upper airway. Asthma is more down in the lungs, the cough sounds different and usually sounds more wheezy when they check the lungs. My daugrher would get “croupy” like this with every virus or cold. We saw an ENT and she actually had what’s called congential Subglottic stenosis. Essentially her trachea was a little narrow and it was causing this. An ENT may be helpful over a pulmonologist who would do asthma stuff. She would sound like this and even get stridor breathing but her lungs would be totally clear when listened to by the dr. They would give her steroids as well to reduce the inflammation and a couple times we had to go to the ER to get a special breathing treatment for it. It’s not the same medication that’s given for asthma and can’t be given at home. Just wanted to share our experience! Make sure to describe the croup like syntoms with your pediatrician to see if they think an ENT would be better.
