If you watch the ep he was basically trying to throw his chef under the bus. Gordon later reams the chef out but the chef takes constructive criticism, and Gordon is basically 100% on his side and against the owner (who is a manipulative little narcissist) by the end of the conversation. It's amazing to watch.

I feel bad for Sukie (5:40) .. They can't afford a chef because the hotel went downhill after her husband was in an accident some years prior. They can't even afford an apartment, so they stay in a converted closet in the hotel. The ending of that episode is the sweetest in the entire show, with Gordon going out of his way to not only find them a new chef, but also pay for her for a full year, *and* find Sukie and her husband a place to stay. Last I checked they were doing very well since the episode aired

@ole998

@@eros4211 people have cared about food for thousands of years, sure there have been times in human history where simply not starving was the goal but ever since we invented agriculture (and even possibly before that) we’ve cared just as much about how food tastes and how it’s presented. Even cavemen used simple herbs and spices to enhance the flavour of their food and ever since the dawn of civilization those that could afford it spent a lot of time making sure the food the ate and served to their guests were presentable and flavourful. Food idn’t just survival, food is status and dining is a social event that’s been around for thousands of years.

She seemed like such a sweet lady though, trying to find anything positive. She was so happy when Ramsay wanted the other half of the cake. Lol

Considering how Gordon Ramsay can compliment a cake that's store bought really makes you realize that his standards for good food isn't as ridiculously high as most people think..

I think you completely missed the point that the rest of the food was so damn bad that even store-bought cake was a ray of "hope" for the hotel... Not that the cake would be able to survive in a fine-dining establishment for its flavor

Noooo guys it’s way more simple than that. Gordon’s a real-life pro. He knew the moment he saw that cake that is was manufactured. The feign of surprise was for effect. Don’t forget, it’s still TV at the end of the day! (Plus, those manufactured desserts are usually objectively pretty good!)
