Tea ceremony context from my rusty knowledge about the subject: entering that room makes them become equals and Buntaro has to humble himself by literally lowering himself in the process (that’s why the room is so small), no matter how high above her he is, part of the ceremony revolves around that notion, when Mariko spins the bowl, it’s because she is offering the prettiest side of it towards him, showing both respect and, if not love, appreciation both for his skills and for his gesture, as for her rejection, part of it is the mistreatment, yes, but it’s also the fact that she is from a lineage that’s far above him, so, when she said the life thing, it’s because she aspired to bigger things that she simply couldn’t reach due to her tie with him, as for the ikebana arrangement behind them, the red camellia (tsubaki) historically symbolized a noble death among Japanese warriors and samurai but it also represents love. 17:36 Those stares and that blink has lead many to believe that he understood that his death wouldn’t be in vain, it’d help Toranaga continue playing this facade of accepting becoming a loser and, alongside that, he figured that he’d die sooner or later anyways, so, why not show loyalty to him until his dying breath as well as helping his lord achieve his goals whilst simultaneously teaching his son a lesson in humility? The acting from every single member of this cast has been stellar and they deserve countless awards for their work.

The seppuku wasn't prearranged, but the generals were rebelling and putting the plan in jeopardy with their resistance. Hiromatsu didn't know what the plan was, but he did know there was one, and if Toranaga keeps insisting he's surrendering, then Hiromatsu knows its important to the plan. As Toranaga's #1 guy, he can't allow things to get derailed by this sudden resistance...so he pulls the seppuku card in order to stop everyone in their tracks. Once that happened, both of them know that Toranaga has to stick to his guns, and Hiromatsu has to go through with it. It was already decided (figuratively speaking) the moment Hiromatsu made the threat. The moment was so emotional between them because they were suddenly saying goodbye after all this time, with no other good options. So, what looks like Hiromatsu taking a stand against Toranaga is really him making the ultimate sacrifice to ensure Toranaga's plan will work.
@norikoma46616 ай бұрын
There was a silent exchange between the two during the seppuku scene. Hiromatsu said ”Use my life to deceive the enemy. If you reject my admonition and order me to commit seppuku, my chief vassal, then Ishidou will surely believe in your surrender." Toranaga is faced with a difficult choice by Hiromatsu. Should he lose the life of his most trusted vassal here? But he knew that this method would surely deceive Ishidou.

Her family was killed because her father committed a grave act of treason. If you are able to abstract your opinion of Mariko from the great performance of Anna Sawai, there is nothing honorable about her, as she is ultimately a prideful, selfish hypocrite at best. @@JazzyBelle611 Everybody seems to think the husband knew that she was seeking death to escape him, despite the whole reveal of her wish being in the episode that she explains the eightfold fence. When she would ask him to kill herself she presented it as doing it so she could do it for her family that she lost. Of course she wouldn't tell him to his face "I want to kill myself because I hate being stuck to you." so every time he denied it he thought he was doing her a mercy by telling her to live and hopefully with time she would come to forgive herself for what happened with her family. It wasn't until the tea ceremony that she finally told him and he understood why she wanted to kill herself. It wasn't because she wanted death she wanted to be away from him. Despite not knowing this though it's clear Mariko was cold to him during the marriage. In small hints you can see it where he walks in on her laughing with their child and then instantly turns to ice. He's unforgiveable for being an abuser but he was pushed into it by her constant ice routine. She thought herself better than him and even lamented to her friend why did her father choose someone so bad for her to marry and that probably leaked through into their interactions which caused him to crash out and react by taking it out on her. Again, it's obvious and plain as day that the husband had no idea that by denying her death he wasn't saving her or offering her a mercy. He was unknowingly being a villain in everybody's eyes by forcing her to live her life chained to him.

Great interpretation, but I think you are forgetting when the phrase was originally said. When at the beggining of the show Tadayoshi had to commit sepukku and kill his heir due to disrespecting the council, Hiromatsu criticized his recklessness and called him a fool, to which Toranaga replied: "No, he was brave. I don't approve of all this pointless death", which implies he doesn't approve of the cultural act of seppukku to right a wrong. So when Hiromatsu threaten to commit seppukku and Toranaga didn't back down, he tells him "so you DO believe in pointless death".
Google Translate: An important relative of the person committing seppuku, or a person who is excellent in swordsmanship, is chosen to assist in seppuku. The act of cutting one's head in seppuku is not a cruel act, but an act of compassion that relieves suffering. When Japan was defeated in World War II, Takijirou Onishi, the commander who invented the kamikaze attack force, committed seppuku instead of surrendering to the Allied forces. To atone for the sin of leading his subordinates to death. He refused kaishaku (assisted decapitation), committed seppuku, and died after suffering for more than ten hours. Many other generals also committed seppuku.

And Toranga and his eyes wee looks and secret code like he knows what he's donig and he is going to lose his best friend. In the previous episode he said winning this war is costing him a lot. And in that moment he realized that its costing him is only and best friend to keep the plan ging straight.

Hiromatsu sacrificing his life wasn't apart of the original plan. Toranaga needed his 3 generals to pledge their loyalty/allegiance on paper so that the plan could continue. But he also had already suspected that he was losing them so when they ultimately spoke out against him and were prepared to revolt against him, it confirmed his suspicion which also put his plan in jeopardy. Hiromatsu reading the room, acts quickly and makes the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the plan continues. Toranaga doesn't lose his 3 generals and the idea/image that Toranaga is completely "defeated" is cemented so that Crimson Sky can truly commence.

Toda either guesses this or still didn't know, but he framed his seppuku in a way such that only he died right then, thus saving all the other retainers who Toranaga would definitely need later. I think the subterfuge is easier to see, if you think about the world they live in. Toronaga has spies everywhere feeding him information, so he knows that his enemies do as well, watching everything that happens in Edo and then reporting back to Osaka. Toronaga is a feared because of his intellect and his bloodline, so when they hear word the he is going to give up without a fight, no one in their right mind would think of it as anything other than a ploy. Toronaga knowing this pretends to act sickly and not attend his own sons funeral because of it knowing that word would get back to them giving some weight to the claim he would surrender. Toronage then brings all his vassals to pledge their loyalty knowing that some of them wouldn't and was absolutely ready to sacrifice a few of them to prove unconditionally that he plans to surrender. At the meeting when these things start to develop Hiromatzu immediately understands the ploy and offered himself instead knowing that his sacrifice being his best friend and mentor for decades would cement toronagas plans and that this would be the best way he can serve his lord in his mind. As for the Subbuku and seconding in general, its not a disrespect to be asked to second, it would be considered a great honour and would generally be performed by a loved one or someone who you deeply respect. The idea is to open your belly to show that you yourself would be willing to die for your belief, honour, dishonour etc. and your second would end your suffering as a mark of respect. You are not required to have a second and many chose not to and would just bleed their guts out on the floor in agony, but that kinda ruins the mood so wasn't often done.

Hiromatsu committed suicide to make Ishido think Toranaga is truly broken and defeated.

Hiromatsu's death was one of the craziest scenes I've seen in recent years. It does show how strong is japanese culture and how far their customs about loyalty go.

Imagine being servants on the cleanup crew for these big meetings never knowing if you’re just gonna bus some empty tea cups and half burned incense or if you’re gonna have to clean up a bloody suicide and beheading.

The only ppl that know what's going on is toranaga and Mariko. He had to let his best friend die in order to continue putting on a facade. It's fucked up but there was nothing he could do

Y'all need to react to 'The First Slam Dunk'. The greatest sports anime movie IMO. Directed by Takehiko Inoue, the GOAT himself. The madman made 3 of the greatest manga ever (Slam Dunk, Vagabond, Real) and directed this masterpiece. He can't miss

Was so stressing watching this reaction knowing what will come at the end. Stressing even more knowing what will come of the next episode. In another note, anyone else at 14:19 get Perona vibes from that laugh😂😂

I truly do love this show, with that said, Toranaga has me stressing. Trying to figure out his plan, with me doubting myself everytime I think I know what he's doing

Love your guy's reactions, I deeply enjoy them. You guys really need to watch a show called "The Curse" with Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone. The ending to this show is insane, trust me
