I watch only Director’s Cut. Theatrical cut shouldn’t be included. The transfer is outstanding.

I imported The Abyss and enjoyed my time. I hadn't seen the film in years. You're right about that FIGHT! scene, it's hilarious but somehow Cameron pulls it off. Apply heat on the sticker using a hairdryer. It peels off easy.

Gave a like immediately after the fight, fight clip while the rat was breathing in liquid. Second best performance behind Ed Harris. This is based on Russ' revelation that the rat approved the script and was inspired by James Cameron.

And FIGHT we shall!! The Abyss isn’t Citizen Kane (Cameron is incapable of such lofty heights), however it’s a sentimental favorite for anyone who saw it in the theaters that summer. I’ve always loved this cast, and it’s my favorite performance by Mary Elizabeth. In 1989 the world was blown away by the special effects of this film. I remember people saying they were going to make a Spider Man film using the water alien FX. I still respect the deep dives taken by this channel, and I respect the differences in opinion, frustrating though they may be. You got jokes? So do we. It’s all good. To be fair, I subscribe for their reviews of physical releases and whether or not I should spend my money on them. I enjoy their excitement for these 4K releases, so I’m bummed they’re not as stoked as I was for the 4K Abyss.

I (Matt) am super pumped The Abyss is finally here. I think rewatching it now gave me a different perspective on it, but it is still all of those things you mentioned, and I still love it to this day. My only gripe about this release, which is small in the grand scheme, is I wish the packaging/art was original and not this stupid floating head nonsense.

Spot on about Cameron's bottom of the ocean obsession . I think what's kind of fun about him is that he's eccentric like the old Hollywood filmmakers. There's truly not many - successful ones - who are kinda that cuckoo. I did crack up when Russ said, "He's passionate about being basic."

You said it better than I did... that's a great comparison of his eccentricities to old Hollywood filmmakers. What's unusual about him, is that most filmmakers with those tendencies focus on more arthouse or important films, where Cameron is cool just remaking Ferngully 😂 It sounds like a diss, and would be against practically every other filmmaker, but damn can Cameron make it work.

My only complaint is they changed the blue tint of the water on the dvd to a green color grade for the 4K. I liked the blue better. Other than that, I'm happy with this 4K. And the ONLY way to watch this movie is the director's cut.

Had to import to the UK because of the rat based BBFC shenanigans but glad i did, forgot how enjoyable it is. And Directors Cut 100%, theatrical loses so much of what the actual tone and message of the movie is

I want nothing to do with Cameron's "remasters." I don't want the Abyss to look like a modern movie, because modern movies look like absolute garbage. I'll stick with my DVD of The Abyss.

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio said she was very angry with Cameron because of that scene she was topless and he had to do the scene over and over. Cameron is such a perfectionist but she felt like he was humiliating her on purpose and taking advantage of her that's why she walked out. Then he ran out of film 🤷‍♂

I got and watched the 4k disc and thought it looked great. I understand the setiment on A.I. and changing the look and feal of a movie, i'm torn on what I agree and like more, i don't know? I always likes the Abyss, prefer the directors cut though. Got to say I always found it to have a pretty serious tone. The one big gripe about this movie is that it seems to me the aliens are at fault for starting the whole mess of the sub going down, if you know your craft disrupt or produce electrical interference, maybe don't approch a sub by a rock cliff in the sea. Note: I have been through two copies of Aliens 4k, and both dont display the menu screen correctly and only sometimes actually play on my Panosonic UP-DB 820 4K disc player. Anyone else have this issue on Aliens or other 4k Cameron discs? Keep up the good work guys!

Thank you! And yes, totally agree on the serious tone of the director's cut, which isn't bad if that's what you're looking for. The light, kid friendly theatrical cut is what I've always known, so it's a bit jarring going to the other version for me. I also haven't popped my copy of Aliens in yet, but I hope there's no issues...

I just watched my 4k of Aliens today and the extended version played perfectly but the theatrical version had a lip-sync issue. The sound was just slightly late. I only watched for about 35 minutes, then switched to extended and it was perfectly synced. That's the version I prefer anyways. I also liked the extended version of The Abyss the best.
