Nobody taps into our collective fear of drowning quite like Mr. Cameron
@shainewhite2781

This movie had a lot of problems behind the scenes, as James Cameron was going through a divorce with his wife Gale Anne Hurd at the time. He would yell at the cast and crew for not doing a great job on any of the scenes. Ed Harris got into a fight with Cameron and punched him in the face for all his constant yelling. Cameron almost drowned during the scene where Bud and Catfish swim from the side of the platform to the other. He punched the stunt coordinator for not helping him. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio walked off the set crying after her resuscitation scene was filmed over and over, until Cameron yelled "Cut!" She said, "We are not animals!" A hurricane hit near the set of the movie, forcing production to be shut down until the repairs can be made. After 4 months of filming had wrapped, the cast and crew tore apart the set with their bare hands to let out all the rage and frustration of working with Cameron. Ed Harris pulled over the side of the road and broke down crying, as his experience of working with Cameron was finally over.

Yeah, the videos on the making of this film are well worth watching. Also, based on a lot of personal accounts I've hear and read, Ed Harris is a nightmare to work with on his own, which is terrible to hear because he is such a great actor but allegedly not a nice guy on a set at all.

Apparently Cameron was almost as bad on the set of Aliens (2 years prior)... the filming and set crew were used to working with Ridley Scott (A Gentlemen) and refused to work with him after he treated them like crap. He would later go on about how "the crew were just faithful to Ridley and had never worked with a real director, so i put them in their place"... but according to the crew he just treated everyone like dirt. Cameron sounds like a real dime to work with...

As a guy who was a former submariner, I can surely tell you that the beacon that was released from the crashed naval submarine was only released to provide a location for the sub for when a retrieval team comes for the nukes; not to come rescue the crew.

33:50 - In the novelization it was explained that the ring was made of titanium since he and Lindsey worked on these rigs. Made more sense than something ornate. In my opinion, this Extended Special Edition is leaps and bounds better than the theatrical, which cut the major subplot of WW3 being on the horizon up top, and didn't have as much time to develop the characters. I literally waited 14years to get this on bluray and FINALLY did a few months ago (I even put up a video about it on my Channel). Being a fan of this is what got me excited for Avatar when it was first announced. I hear Cameron can be difficult to work with (as some highly creative and passionate people can be) but I sure like the result of that hard work.

Achara: "I'm Not Prepared To See A Dead Bloated Body." Me: No Worries. At that depth, there's little to no decomposition, due to the near freezing temperatures, and lack of sunlight and oxygen. Is the reason that in deepwater wrecks (like the Edmund Fitzgerald, on Lake Superior), the bodies of crew(and/or passengers) that go down with the vessels, are seldom recovered. No bacteria. Meaning no decomp. Meaning no gases building up inside the corpses, to cause them to float to the surface. Large number of deep wrecks are usually declared grave sites.

I've seen this movie many times, including going to a movie theater to see it when it first came out. I only just now realized that Bud is the direct opposite in this movie to Bruce Willis in Armageddon. Bud: "My guys are oil workers, they're not qualified for this!" Bruce Willis in Armageddon: "Shit yeah I'll send my oil rig workers into outer space! In fact, I insist!"

This isn’t just a film, it’s an EPIC, in every sense of the word. This film was also a game changer for filmmaking because James Cameron came up with a technique of controlling ambient light from the surface of a water tank by covering the surface of the water with shredded rubber tires, making it so no light would be refracted in the water that they couldn’t control. He used the same technique with ping pong balls in Avatar: The Way Of Water.

They used several rats for the liquid breathing scene. All initially survived the ordeal, but were terrified and traumatised. After the first screening of The Abyss on UK television, which included this scene, all further screenings have featured an edited, pan and scan version of the scene, due to complaints from animal welfare charities, as they feared animals would be mistreated by people imitating the scene in real life.

According to Michael Beihn, who started in Hollywood with James and Bill Paxton, James was so prolific, while they were filming the first Terminator, he would drink and talk with James and Bill, in James's trailer. Beihn said James was storyboarding Terminator 2, the abyss, and Aliens, all while filming Terminator! And Bill and Michael were in those films.. Bill not in this one...but in Titanic and True Lies.

"I dont know nautical knots but that sounds fast" A knot is 1 nautical mile per hour. Which is about 1.14 miles. The term comes from Age of Sail days. The botswain would toss the end of a knotted rope into the water (the rope had knots tied into it at measured intervals), and then let the rope play out for a minute and count how many knots passed. And that would indicate their speed. A typical schooner in the Age of Sail could travel 6 to 10 knots on the open sea. Large clippers travel around 12 to 15 knots iirc. 1990s submarines could travel about 25 to 30 knots cruising speed, 35 max redlining the nuclear power plant. Torpedoes travel about 40 to 60 knots. (The Mark 48 torpedo used by USA at the rime had a max speed.of 55 kn.) So 80 knots (91 mph, 148 kph) for an underwater device is UNHEARD of at this time, let alone the faster speeds. And the faster something travels in fluid the greater the wake (pressure wave following it). Hence the turbulence the submarine got tossed around in. Also 1800 is crush depth (hull collapses) for that submarine (probably Ohio class ballistic missile sub)... the sub was passing quickly from 1500 through 1750 right before stuff started rupturing. Ended up way deeper than that.

This movie feels different now with everything that has come out in the news. Back in the 80s it was just classic science fiction albeit one that hadnt been done before. James Cameron had really come up with an interesting take with aliens existing underwater. Now, its seems like he was closer to reality then he realised. I recommend people look up the Nimitz incident along with Admiral Gallaudet's recent comments concerning our oceans.

great movie. awesome reaction. i feel a lot of anger is directed at the military officer in charge of the dive. i think a lot of people just see him as a pain in the butt, but nobody talks about how even though he is definitely not doing well. he did his very best to control the effects of the deep dive as best as he could by using pain when he cuts his arm to control what is happening to him. yes, his character is meant to be the bad guy, but he really isn't a bad guy. he is a person who is highly trained and just happened to have all the elements that could go wrong on his mission happen. ultimately, he is the character we have to hate, but i think it was just bad luck and he could have cracked way sooner but his military training kept him somewhat stable for a longer time then other people.

The blue was a chemical in the toilet to keep it sanitary but it does stain and was pretty common in industrial toilets back then, on ships and such. So everyone that saw Bud's blue hand pretty much knew he'd had to get something out of the toilet but it wasn't unsanitary.

This is definitely a film to learn more about, and not just for all the behind the scenes drama. It's also fascinating due to the filming location and the logistics involved, Cameron inventing and building his own underwater cameras to get the shots he wanted, not to mention the incredible and very crucial leap in CGI for the water tentacle, which was the basis and only reason we got the liquid metal terminator in T2.

Ironically, the dark blue water in the toilet is cleaner than just a normal toilet, because its essentially solid cleaning solution. Granted, these were in the old days before fancy cleaning things you could install. Instead, it just used a cleaning fluid mixture as the toilet water. Blue bleach basically.

The blue in the toilets is the same chemical agent still used in a lot of ports potties and at one time it was used in the toilets of commercial airline bathrooms! Why "The Abyss" looks so good even in 2024? Because these actors suffered under Jim Cameron's direction, submerged in cold water during the shooting of this movie. This was real water, not cgi water. They had problems in their eyes, because of chlorine in the water, etc. Ed Harris doesn't even want to talk about all that... But, Cameron seems to be like a sadistic director, but he has created masterpieces like this one, and all the others. The only CGI relly important here is the water controlled by the aliens. The water tentacle was a hit in those times, like the liquid metal terminator in T2.

The blue substance in the toilet is basically just bleach and blue dye. It's a common cleaner. The rat(s) really did breathe the liquid oxygen live on screen. It's a real thing. Its use in diving is largely theoretical and impractical. But it is used in the medical field to treat certain premature newborn conditions. Yes, too much oxygen is dangerous when diving. The body needs a certain mixture at specific depths. If your mixture is off, you're in trouble very quickly.

Hammering thr doors on the sub.... If there's water on both sides of the door then the pressure is probably equalized and the door can be opened. If there's air on the other side, then even if they do manage to get the pressure-locked door open they'll drown anyone alive on the other side. How the hammering sounds will tell them if the next compartment is already flooded.
