Billy said earlier on in the movie “We’re all going to die” because he knew that their fate was inevitable. He knows what the mindset of a hunter is because he was one, and that it would not stop until they were all dead 1 by 1. Him stopping to face the Predator was him taking is fate into his own hands and saying I know I’m going to die but I’d rather die on my terms fighting face to face instead of running away which is why he threw his gun away. A very noble death which is why the predator took his skull as a trophy and not anybody else’s.

Whats interesting with this movie is the tone change midway. First we see a "classic" Macho filled with testosterone action flick, where US commandos brings Freedom to Locals in their own country, like we used to see in the 80's. And then... we see those same bad asses who can take a whole little army on themselfs, getting picked one by one, by an unknowned enemy, and you see them loose their shit for the first time. And the climax is the Hunted becoming the Hunter and vice versa, when Arny reverse the roles, of him laying traps and becoming invisible for its adversary, taking him by surprise. Its once again a terrific job By John McTiernan, who is also the director of Die Hard and Hunt for Red October.

24:00 Let me explain, the reason why Arnold's wound was lesser from the plasma cannon compared to other people whose body parts were blown off, is because the predators plasma cannon has a charging mechanism. The more it charges its shot, the more power it has and the more damage it will inflict. So the predator only fired off a weak, uncharged shot on Arnold so that his wound is lesser.

Some feel that the violence near the beginning was gratuitous because it was for a subplot that went nowhere and had nothing to do with the Predator, but I think the subplot was to throw the audience off in order to surprise us later as well as to get us invested in the characters before they are hunted, and the ultra-violence we were shown was to establish the characters as bad-asses among men, which provides a contrast with how they're mercilessly picked off one by one by the Predator. The latter makes the Predator seem even more impressively scary, of course. He was successfully hunting some of the world's greatest bad-asses, not just a bunch of random people.

@rbrtck
@rbrtck 7 ай бұрын
@@CT2507 Of course, the setup was necessary, but I recall the question being why was that whole subplot was such a big deal, meriting such a big action scene, political drama, and so much thought on the part of both the characters and audience, when it had nothing to do with the real plot of the movie? And the answer is that we not only got to see just how bad-ass the future victims were, but we were also distracted and thereby felt blindsided like the characters did. The whole alien trophy hunter thing thereby comes even more out of left field and is a shock. At least that's why I think *such* a big deal was made out of an otherwise abandoned, pointless subplot.

@@CT2507 I just meant it's played as though it were important, and that whole scene of ultraviolence ate up a bunch of the budget as well as a fair amount of time. If you think it was nothing to begin with, then OK, but others wonder why, to them, it seems so involved and over the top for nothing.

So the reason I think the Predator wasn't able to get a better shot on Dutch in the "get to the choppa" scene is because Dutch was unloading nonstop fire on him with his mini-gun, basically causing it to be distracted enough that it couldn't get off a clean shot. It was just able to clip Dutch, but that's all. It's hard to have perfect aim when a nonstop barrage of bullets are being fired at it. EDIT: Spot on about the acting. I really undervalued how good this film was growing up and dismissed it as another cheesy 80s action flick, but the acting is extremely convincing and lived in as well as the film has as strong horror atmosphere.

Greatest action sci-fi horror movie of all time next to RoboCop, released the same year too :D Trivia... - Sonny Landham (Billy)... had to have a bodyguard on set at all times. Not to protect himself though. To protect others from him. Considering he was surrounded by guys who were all over 20 stones, and athletes, his antics were legendary. His form of play fighting was actually just fighting. His bodyguard was apparently 3 times the size of Arnie and was ex-military :D - Predator's good tech first aid kit, was a real veterinary kit :D - Greatest handshake in history - Jean-Claude Van Damme was the original Predator... but he acted like a diva, moaned that he was the biggest star in the film even though he was unknown at the time, then moaned about not having his face seen on camera... then he caused a stuntman to get injured because he had a diva-tantrum, and then got fired. They then replaced him with Kevin Peter Hall, redesigned the Predator, and then also cast KPH as the chopper pilot at the end of the film so his face could be seen on camera as a middle finger to JCVD. The casting of Shane Black was so McTiernan could have an emergency writer on set when something didn't work.
