I'm from Alberta and I recognize that accent. Some people have it, and some people don't. I carry it intermittently, especially when I'm a little nervous. It's weird. He's putting a lot of emphasis on his R's. You don't notice how different we look and sound until you see it in a KZbin video, and then the familiar becomes strange.

No one thinks of themselves as having an accent but we all do, we just sound "normal" to ourselves and our communities as that's how we speak, everyone has an accent of some sort though. I am from Ontario and people asked me where I was from in Alberta, I could hear an accent in people there as well. Western Canada has a different accent than English Ontarians/Quebecers and Eastern Canada has a different accent while Newfoundland has another.

As an American English speaker who frequently meets Canadians, I can tell by their accent. I can say most of the way you enunciate words is very similar to Americans just south of the border in upper mountain states of Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and even lower mid west like Kansas and Nebraska. I met an older middle aged couple, the Millers, from Alberta and both of them spoke their words like they were Americans. Mr. Miller even had close family in North Dakota.

My uncle who is a retired Alberta Farmer and Rancher, is in his 70’s and has a strong drawl in his accent, very similar to an Oklahoma accent which makes sense since during the dustbowl a lot of Oklahomans aka Okies and Texans left those states and those who didn’t go out to California headed north and quite a lot settled in rural Alberta and Saskatchewan. Also rural Montana and Wyoming people have a drawl as well.

I think people in Alberta fantasize over being southern/country. I think this accent is made up by the younger generations from being influenced by country music from the Southern US. Its like when a kid from the suburbs starts to talk and act like a “gangster rapper” of some sort, even though he hasn’t stepped foot in a real ghetto, they’re only mimicking what they think is cool.

I find that males tend to have more pronounced accents than women of the same region in most cases. I haven't heard anyone that sounds like him in Central Canada, and haven't heard a similar sounding accent in Calgary or Red Deer either. I'm more accustomed to rural Ontario dialect, which can be choppy and doesn't drawl as much as this particular youtuber.
@teengenerate082 жыл бұрын
I hear similarities between this guy's accent and rural Ontario, but you are right, there is a certain kind of choppy, almost staccato patter to a lot of rural Ont, esp SW Ont that contrasts to this man's drawl. In addition, the Alberta accent has a certain "flat"-ness to it (it don't know the proper linguistic term) that contrasts to how nasal and creaky rural Ont can sound.

+Andrew Kinamore Down by Del Bonita there are a lot of people that talk like this. You basically have to live right on the US border. I've heard three main accents in Alberta. This one, a "general American" accent, and then an ugly, annoying as hell rural Albertan accent (like what premier Alison Redford had).

this is a really strange type of Albertan accent i've only really heard a couple times spoken. only really with some people who live really out in the countryside, south maybe around okotoks area. in Calgary, virtually no one really sounds like this. strangely some mormons and hutterites do seem to have this accent though.
