I'll list some spell combos here wizards can do. feel free to clarify how any of them works: 1. web + grease/mind whip 2. dissonant whispers + summon undead (ghost) 3. summon greater demon (barlgura, grapple) + phantom hound 4. watery sphere + command: sing/psychic lance 5. black tentacles + grease/mind whip 6. telekinesis + bestow curse/synaptic static 7. erupting earth/storm sphere + transmute rock (if environment supports) 8. hold person/monster + scorching ray 9. mind whip/dissonant whispers + wall of stone (if environment supports) 10. mind spike + pyrotechnics

Just a fog + fireball at lower levels can get your enemies disadvantage in their saves. Sleet storm+steel wind breaker, have them slip and go prone and than smack them all with advantage for 6d10 and maybe crit for 12d10 with all the extra rolls

the biggest flaw of the bigbys hand + bestow curse combo is it's hard to do it consistently until tier 3 because both are 5th level casts and a wizard only has so many 5th level slots. the better way to do this is through the divine sorc. a divine sorc can easily convert unneeded 2nd-4th level slots to 5th level slots so you can comfortably do this tactic every combat. to take the penalties further, i'd add in a synaptic static as well (another 5th).

Oh, good addition with synaptic static. One of my favourites for 5th level dmg spells.

@@thedungeon1578 yup. its one of my faves too as its blast and a debuff all in 1 without concen. i like combining it with telekinesis as well.

I think if you're coming from a place of wanting to have fun and not actively trying to steal the limelight, there's nothing wrong with making a build that's self-sufficient. all of my builds are self-sufficient which means they can fit in any party and doesn't need specific party members. there's nothing wrong with holding the limelight for a time. it's up to the DM to balance the spotlight. there's a very big difference between a build that performs great that it overshadows unoptimized builds of other party members handled by a collaborative person and spotlight hog person. the 1st one is ok imo. the 2nd one needs to be talked to. just like in my other comments where i recommend a fighter 2 dip, i again think superior technique-ambush is a worthy consideration over defense. going 1st and imposing control/inflicting burst dmg imo is more valuable that +1 ac which won't matter if the enemy is controlled or dead. for level progression, i agree starting fighter 1. then i'd personally go wizard 9 before going back to fighter 2 for action surge at level 11 as rushing to 9 is important for wall of force.

I ST Ambush is definitely a worthy consideration. Defense is a good all rounder though, which I generally like. Especially if your DM likes to target casters concentrating on spells, not getting hit is pretty important. OTOH, as you mention, if you have everyone CC'd, there's no one left to hit you anyways, so good suggestion.
