I own a Sony A7 III and Metabones 5 adapter. In your video you mention the Canon/Metabones 'hunt' problem. I, too, experienced the same hunt-focusing issue. Fortunately for me, a photo buddy owns a Sony A7R III with Metabones 5 adapter. He simply changed my Metabones 5 from 'phase' focus mode (blue LED) to 'contrast' focus mode (red LED) and the focusing since then has been sharp and very rapid most of the time. I also purchased a Sigma MC-11 which performed totally unacceptably with my Canon 17-40mm; 70-200mm and 24-105mm lenses, all of which work very well with the Metabones 5. My friend also said the contacts on the Sigma MC-11 are abrasive and can cause permanent damage (not sure if he meant both camera and lens mounts or only one of them). MC-11 will be returned.

I shoot the Canon 135/2L, 200/2.8L and 400/5.6L on the Sony a7r2 with the Sigma MC-11. Great results with all three lenses. However, if the subject is moving fast (sports and dogs) forget it. I think your review is spot on.

Right. Adapted lenses work fine for casual or deliberate work, but not really for anything requiring speed for the most part.

Hi Dustin, I have a Sony A6500 + Sigma MC-11 + Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS USM lens, there is a trick to make autofocus works on this lens. This lens has a very narrow focusing rotation therefore before we press the shutter/focus button, first we have to turn the focus ring to just make the object slightly clear then press shutter/focus button, once we done that it will focus very very fast and accurate, the photo from this combination is ridiculously sharp even at wide open. I would never sell my Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS USM lens, this lens is superb and I don't need a Sony FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS lens to do a macro photography on Sony camera body. Anyway thanks for your great review.

I know what you're saying. I also find that using the focus limiter (where one exists) on lenses appropriately can make a huge difference in those very slow focus racks that makes AF seem slower.

I see that you always make every effort to bring us a very straight forward review and I also appreciate the hard work and the time you contribute to it. The Metabones V tripod foot is especially useful when you're using the Canon 85.1.2 and the 70-200 2.8 IS and I like the weather sealing.

I have to say that my experience with both adapters has been a bit different. I own the MC 11 as well as the Metabones V and I use them both with the Sony A7R III. What I have come to realize in my experience is that my Sigma Art lenses focus much faster with the Metabones V in AF-C mode. To achieve this, I would depress the side button on the MB-V WHILE attaching it to the camera. The indicator light on the MB-V will now be blue instead of read and the lens will focus incredibly fast in AF-C mode for photography. I usually use Flexible spot for this. For video however, the MC-11 is fantastic for video autofocus when using Sigma art lenses. Maybe you can give this a try for photography as I described with the MB-V. I also shoot weddings. Thanks for another great review DA

I tried both modes (including Green), and I'm surprised that you had better Sigma ART performance with the Metabones. That hasn't been my experience, but it does highlight that using adapters continues to be a somewhat inconsistent experience.

I received my A7iii the day it was released in the US. I got the Sony 85 1.8 and the MC-11 with it. I used the MC-11 along with my Sigma 150-600 C lens and went straight out to take bird photos. It worked amazingly well. All focus methods were at my disposal and I was a very happy camper. Then I just went to shoot a senior portrait session this weekend and planned on using my Tamron 24-70 G2 and my Canon 70-200 L 2.8 (first gen) along with my new Sony 85. He was a competitive swimmer and I needed to get action shots. When needing the Tamron to work to get him diving because I was forced to be close to him it couldn’t focus on him and I had to switch back to the Sony and change my angle. We moved to another side of the indoor pool area and I tried using my Canon lens and it focused on him but didn’t track him reliably enough in mid dive. (I was about 40 degrees to him so he was coming towards me and sideways at the same time). Once again I switched back to the Sony lens and changed my angle a little as I was using the Canon at 70. The rest of the shoot I never left my Sony 85 1.8 again. What an awesome lens it is! I still posses my Canon 7Dmkii but have zero desire to pick it up and will probably sell it to purchase native Sony and maybe Sigma glass! (Edit: I forgot to mention when using the 150-600 with OS combined with Sony IBIS I was able to take a shot at 600mm hand held at about 1/50th of a second. Only 1 of the four were good but it did it. My Canon would have never been able to do that with just lens stabilization. )

That sounds about right. Sigma glass via the MC-11 seems to be the best option for adapting. I've been bugging Tamron to make something similar for their lenses.

I like both (Billy Martin), there is one reason I often use the Metabones V. The V has been modified so that you can mount a Sony tc on the camera followed by the Metabones. The Sony tc’s are great but will not fit into the MC-11. I have used the Sony 2x TC with the MetabonesV and the Sigma 300 to 800 f5.6 and have had good autofocus.

Hey Dustin! Great video bud! I rented the A9 bought both the mc11 and the Metabones mark V. Coming from my 1dx and all the Canon glass I was interested to see performance at my weddings. Video coming soon on my KZbin channel but I found the opposite to be true. I found the mc11 to be far better than the Metabones. I also did a styled model shoot and had all day to use both back to back and really was disappointed with the metabones. I used 85mm 1.2l, 70-200mm 2.8l, 100mm 2.8l macro, 16-35mm 2.8l, and 50mm 1.2mm. Yes firmware was updated on both as well. Face detect was much better on mc11, and much better AF. I agree native for speed is the way to go. I also found performance on both to be actually impacted the most by the position of the focal length such as on the 70-200. It struggles when at either end extreme. Back it off a tick or two and it works much better. Annoying but interesting. 😂
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 6 жыл бұрын
You seem to be getting at something else that I've noticed - adapters seem to work best within the moderately wide to short telephoto range. I've seen good performance with lenses from 24-135mm. Wider lenses will pulse more, and longer lenses will more often just give up.
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is defiantly the factor of focal length. I shoot a lot with the 70 - 200, and was frustrated when at 200mm (either adapter).. but, as soon as I went back to 135, 100mm etc.. it would work much better. Specifically, I mean I am able to use more of the far outer points. At 200mm, I have to keep the points closer to the center etc.. Now, with that said.. when my bride was walking down the isle I was using the Canon 70-200mm IS, MC-11, and using large flexi-spot and ensuring not to goto the full 200mm setting (even 180mm made a difference) and I was able to shoot pretty much like I would normally. Later at the reception, I wanted to also compare the Metabones V. at a glance they both worked "the same" but, with more time I just ended up preferring the MC-11 based on focus. I may need more time to spend with them, so I really can't say for 100% sure. I only had 5 days.

I’m not surprised of this result, Lensrentals will not suggest the use of this adapter for professional use because of to many complains by photographer. I’m thinking of adding A Sony but I decided to stick with Canon mine was base on Ergonomics and menu and cost the only way to use the Sony camera is with natives lens my humble opinion. So for me that is to costly at this time to switch 29 year years with Canon. As alway very professional revue thank you.

I've been using the 7 artisans adapter so I can mount my old canon ef-s lenses on the a7riii while I wait for my e mount lenses to arrive and it works pretty good. The autofocus probably isn't as good for moving subjects as a native e mount lens would be but for everyday photography of still subjects it should do just fine. I actually tested the same lens on my Canon SL2 and then on the Sony with the 7 artisans adapter and the autofocus worked nearly the same. I switched back and forth focusing on 2 different objects and couldn't really see a difference in speed. Not bad a $70 adapter

i had the 100-400 II with the MB with several sony bodies and it worked GREAT (both af-s and af-c) in GREEN mode only , surprised to hear it didnt worked for you, the first time always doesnt work well because the adapter has to "learn" about the lenes, you have to focus several times at all focals and then turn off the camera and the MB will "store" the lens and it will work better afterwards (this info is in the mb website)

For video, FYI, Dustin, you can set it to advanced mode by pressing the button on the Metabones and reconnecting the lens/adapter while holding the button, and in video mode focus at the center of the frame works OK. However, manual focus is definitely better if you plan out your shots. I use that button all the time anyway! It's my "preview aperture" button, I use it for checking hyperfocal length when my lenses don't tell me. I've been using the Metabones for about 6 months, and it's definitely been a hit-and-miss experience, but I am glad I got it. Since I got an A7RIII things have been amazing! It can be a little hassle: I've had the Metabones freeze up in the middle of a game twice in a few hours; but when it messes up, I can manual focus, and in the freezes, I was able to unfreeze it by disconnecting it and giving it a quarter-twist and back, so I lost a few seconds each time. It's been worth it for my general style of shooting. I'm happy with it instead of the MC-11: I didn't find that any Sigma lenses really fit my needs and/or budget. I've got all EF lenses, as well as some old Minolta SR glass. I didn't actually own any EF lenses before I got a Sony: I explicitly made the decision to go for a frankenstein's monster schizo camera system held together by an adapter, and am happier financially for it. I refuse to buy Sony native lenses that are 2x+ the cost for similar (sometimes worse) performance, and especially with a III camera the focus is loads better than it was on my past Nikon DSLRs. It keeps my sensor a little cleaner and I'm saving thousands of dollars for it... like US$2500 or so right now for my system? Jeez. The 17-40L isn't an amazing lens, but it does the job well: I don't have an alternative from Sony except for the just as not-great 16-35 F4 that's twice the price, for one. It's definitely a difficult balance, but it works for me. A warning: you may lose your Canadian citizenship for that "Jordan and Kyle" comment. For shame! Chris Niccolls is a national treasure.

Best adapted long, variable aperture zoom experience I've had on the A9 and A7rIII is the Tamron SP 150-600 G2 A-mount on the firmware updated LAEA3 adapter. The new f/11 min OSPDAF does well. Still requires decent light but that lens requires decent light, anyway. It is a viable combination, though.

That may be true, but who is buying A mount lenses these days?
@setaside2
@setaside2 6 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott haha! No, seriously, that A-mount lens in particular sells surprisingly well. There are plenty of A-mount users who converted over and picked up either the LAEA3 or 4 and made their merry way with a very nice collection of glass. The Zeiss 24, 50, 85, and 135 lenses are all superb, with the 85 and 135 requiring the built-in motor of the LAEA4 to AF... In any case there are still very few 400mm+ considerations for E-mount and both the MC-11 and Metabones Fifth Gen suffer from power degradation with heavy glass. The LAEA3 handles the SP 150-600 G2 with surprising grace on the new gen III / A9 systems. I have the A7s and access to pretty much whatever I want from Sony... And I have 4 adapters (down from 6), including the MC-11 and metabones and LAEA3. If we're looking for the best long glass experience, what's another adapter? *shrug* no big deal except for the expense. At least the lens is priced fairly and has decent secondary market value.
@DustinAbbottTWI

I can definitely attest that the Metabones and MC-11 don't push longer glass very well. I know very little about A mount, and am unlikely to find out, as it seems that pretty much everyone has abandoned development for it (including Sony!)

You can use EF-S lenses with an MC-11 by unscrewing/removing the internal baffle. Not the most graceful solution but it works. Also, some Canon or other-branded APS-C lenses do have full frame sensor coverage...or very close to it. A Tamron 11-16/2.8 at 15-16mm has full-frame coverage. The Canon 10-18 EF-S almost has FF coverage at 13mm. Lots of info on the interwebs. Using APS-C lenses on the A7Rx series especially is reasonable as you still get 18 megapixels in crop/APS-C mode. It's a nice way to use what are usually smaller / cheaper lenses on a FF body, esp if you already have them for another camera body.

I scored a 5D2 super cheap with a couple lenses last year. 28-135 IS & 500mm f/1.8 STM. I sold the 28-135 so all in I'm maybe at $200 for the body and 50mm. I also found a 200mm f/2.8 L and 24-105mm f/4 L IS. Both were cheap as well. The 24-105mm needed to be internally cleaned and I did that myself. I was thinking of carrying over the lenses to another body, but seeing as I'm using the camera to shoot my kids sports, I'm seeing that one of the major downfalls of adapting lenses. Would suggest any other adapter? Or stick to native lenses? Would I be happy with a newer body and a single or maybe two kens setup going from the old 5D2? The only issues I have with it is Obviously the single cross type focus point and the low ISO compared to anything new. My pixel 6a does way better when the sun goes down at the ball games. I basically put the 5D2 away when the games go beyond sunset. Even with the big lights it's just not enough. Making it usable with ISO just destroys the image quality.

I'm shooting with an A7RIII, and I want to invest in a quality range of glass with the future flexibility to use other systems like a BMPCC4k, XT3/XH1, or Panasonic S1H without needing their own new glass. Is performance of lens adaptation good enough to invest in Canon/Nikon glass + Metabones/Novaflex/Vello? My needs are almost entirely based on staged/studio shots - action isn't really something I'm interested in. I also tried Viltrox Mark V EF-E5 this seems to have the IBIS on across all lenses (Steady Shot is always ON) this was greyed out on the IS lenses using the MC-11 adapter. I was wondering, which would be a better options between the Viltrox EF-E5 or the MC-11 in terms of performance if we want to use both IBIS with Canon IS. I bought the MC-11 for my a7III and yes, all my Sigma lenses work wonderfully with it. Granted I don't actually own a native lens yet so don't really have a point of comparison, but just know that I have no issues. (I have not tried anything with video but have seen enough from other reviewers like Peter Greg, to assume that it is probably abysmal.) One lens that I did stick on that I rarely take off -and it isn't even a Sigma, is Canon's Nifty Fifty 50mm f/1.8 (which costs half of what I paid for the MC-11). That combo really works very good and makes the camera actually 'fun' to use since it makes for an almost point-and-shoot system, at least compared to the 5D IV (and Tamron 15-30) that I am usually lugging around.

Thank you for the detailed review of these two adapters, found this information very useful. Overall your results agree with the general consensus in that the adapted lenses are fine for casual photography but not great for paid shoots where speed is of the essence. Anxious to see how well the soon to be released (hopefully) Sigma E-Mount adapted lenses perform and how they compare to OEM lenses. It would be interesting to see how the Sony/Zeiss 50 MM 1.4 you recently tested performed at the wedding, my guess is that this lens was already returned to the lender and unfortunately not available. The focus accuracy difference between the Canon 6D and the 5DMIV using the 35MM F1.4 II is puzzling.

I'd be interested to see how well Canons own M mount to EF Lens adapter works given its essentially in its own native domain. In theory it should work seamlessly and certainly I've no doubt it works much better than offerings from Metabones or Sigma. The reason I ask is that when both Nikon and Canon finally release Full Frame Mirrorless it's inevitable that the only way we'll get to use legacy glass is by way of an adapter. Now obviously we won't know how well their adapted lenses will work compared to their new mirrorless native glass but if say you compared your collection of L glass on a M50 body with adapter and compared it to your 6DmkII it might give us insight as to what level of performance we will likely get compared to our DSLRs when the whole adapted set up remains native 😊

@dunnymonster
@dunnymonster 6 жыл бұрын
teslar1 Thanks for that, what this kind of tells me going forward is that adapting say my Nikkor lenses to a future mirrorless Nikon might not be as straight forward as just buying an adapter. Had your experience been essentially seamless using Canons adapter with Canons DSLR lenses I'd feel more confident going forward doing the same once Nikon get a FF mirrorless out. Sadly I suspect Nikon will likely face similar issues and that's not going to please those with huge telephoto primes and zooms who believe they can carry on using them on a mirrorless body with no negative impact on AF speed and Acquisition. If your experience is anything to go by Nikon shooters with a vast range of long glass might be better sticking to DSLRs. You can be sure they won't wish to repurchase mirrorless mount versions of these very expensive lenses even assuming they become available any time soon after mirrorless launch ( which is extremely unlikely ). In fact it's starting to make sense now why both Canon and Nikon are holding back so long and also perhaps why Sony or Fujifilm haven't exactly been rushing to release long Tele primes. I think they are all still trying to find a solution before going forward. Hmmmm...food for thought there, I for one won't be jumping into Nikon's first mirrorless FF camera, adapter or not, I'll wait and see what those with a bigger investment in glass feel about it first lol. Perhaps DSLRs will be around a bit longer than we all think after all 😊

I've missed several important shots because of this issue and will no longer use this camera for paid gigs. When the viewfinder/screen freezes, the camera will no longer function and must be cycled off (sometimes twice) or the battery must be removed. I just did wedding last week and there are times where my friend (Canon shooter) and myself couldn't tell who's pictures were who's after I edited them in the same style in lightroom. The focal length is what mostly gave it way. I'm a huge fanboy when it comes to Canon colors but after editing thousands of Canon/Sony a7iii files this week I found that I often times preferred my image's sharpness and colors over my friend's Canon 5d mkiii at least when editing with the new adobe profiles. Could also partly be due to the extra latitude (DR) I have when pushing sliders on my a7iii files as well. This was not the case with my a7rii and the old lightroom, so much that I really thought about switching back to Canon.

I don't know how they are going to handle that, but I agree that having existing EF lenses work natively is going be very important to their success.

The shorter focal flange distance between the sensor and lens mount due to mirrorless design wouldn't allow native EF lenses to focus to infinity correctly even. So they have to design a new flange mount and lenses system to accommodate the reduced distance.

I'm afraid that nothing works as well on the RII as it's focus system is not nearly as good as the third generation cameras. It's a great camera in a lot of other ways, but not in the focus department.

Dustin, my MC-11 Sony a7III with Sigma 35mm ART EF combo acted weird yesterday. My camera stopped responding 4 times in the span of three hours on my first outing, so I had to turn it off and turn the mount (with an additional shutter click at the end) for my camera to work. There was at one point where the screen was black but the display was on (maybe the shutter was in it's closed position?) Everything is updated with the latest firmware. Did you experience any camera freezing while you was tested or did I get a bad copy? I am exchanging this mc-11 for another one.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I used to shoot the A7r2 for about 2 years (I'm a Sony shooter moved to mirrorless from the A99). Sony didn't offer much lenses back then, so I ended up with a bunch of Canon glass. The AF was ok-ish but far from perfect. I ended up buying a Canon body (5DsR) and it worked really well as long as I calibrate and re-calibrate my lenses :) Now I got the EOS R and it works very well, but I'm still curious to see how the A7r3 AF evolved compared to the previous generation. Most likely will rent it next week.

Sean is correct. If you are hearing noise, it isn't from the adapter. Many DSLR lenses have a focus system designed for Phase Detect autofocus. USM-type focus motors aren't as quiet as stepping or linear motors on mirrorless bodies.

Would you explain how the actual AF should work while on MID or HI/HI+? The AF (and Eye AF) will lock and not work when I keep the shutter pressed down.
