Everyone praises the SNES's soundchip and I'm not here to discredit in any way. But this soundtrack is indicative of the unique textures and qualities the Genesis was capable of in the hands of a master composer that simply could not be reproduced on the SNES. The soundtrack Jesper Kyd created for this game stands as one of the best ever on the Genesis, and perhaps any console.

Strictly speaking the SNES probably could reproduce the Genesis' music but to do so would take a ton of space. The SNES plays back samples on command with limited live manipulation to generate music and sound effects. The Genesis meanwhile is a synth with a few features missing but the essentials are there. Only six of its channels have full synth capabilities and the other four are basic tones and a noise channel, but the stuff you can make it do and with how little space it takes is pretty incredible. Of course the Genesis can play samples too, but only on one channel to my knowledge, and those are generally kept small and compressed for storage reasons.

@@fisherdotogg It wouldn't quite survive on Super Fami even if you fed it a ton of cart memory, as the Zyrinx/Crionics custom sound driver for MD/Genesis could produce a true, 44.1khz FM output. The SNES would bump up against its 22/24hz 8-bit maximum for samples, even if you gave it - I.e. - like a 64 MB cart size to work with. It would sound close - drums and percussion could ostensibly be improved, but Jesper intentionally used synth drums anyway, so who knows - and you'd lose a lot of other detail, tonally. "One of the programmers, Jens Albretsen developed this insane music program for the Amiga 4000 that would connect directly to a Sega Genesis Dev Kit and create 6 channels of pure FM 44hz CD quality music. That allowed me to really get creative with music making on the Sega Genesis. That just goes to show we were not going to use some 3rd party software in our games - even for music and sfx." - Jesper Kyd Not to mention, the amount of synth-based, coded-to-the-metal modulation and effects work in the very best Genesis music - you can't represent those hardware synth dynamics via a handful of limited sample channels. Jesper and his team probably had one of the best MD/Genesis sound drivers developed outside of Japan (whose developers simply had a massive leg up after working on similar Yamaha chips for popular Japan-origin arcade titles throughout the late 80s and early 90s). That driver developed and propagated by Sega of America sounds downright feeble in 90% of the games that used it, when compared to the stunning Mega Drive music pumping out of developers like Technosoft, Konami, Sunsoft, and all of Sega of Japan's 1st party teams. It's no wonder Jesper's programmer hooked him up with a custom sound driver.

I used to think that the best soundtrack of a game was the soundtrack of Blizzard’s Diablo ll game which Matt Uelman was the composer. Now l realise that the soundtrack of Sega’s The Adventures of Batman and Robin game is the best ever

Hi. I'm not sure I understand what you did: how did you isolate the instruments to be able to reblend them ? Did you port a SEGA Genesis emulator into a VST plugin format and somehow injected GYM instructions into it with a MIDI conversion system ? How was this done ? Sounds great !
