Pete & Pete is peak Nickelodeon. The best thing they ever put out and likely ever will. So much wit, brains, and sheer heart in any given episode. Often a wistful melancholy, too, like it was made by people who truly remembered what it was like being a kid and knew there was no going back.

While I enjoy several 90's Nickelodeon sitcoms for nostalgic reasons, Pete and Pete is pretty much the only one that has increased in my esteem as I've gotten older. I would recommend it to those who missed out or those who were too young for it without any qualifiers; I can't say the same thing about Salute Your Shorts, Keenan & Kel, or Hey Dude.

My all-time favorite show as a kid. The Adventures of Pete & Pete spoke to me on such a visceral level. The odd humor and art film direction gave it such a nuance and uniqueness that just felt right to me. Thanks for covering this one! 👽💜 P.S. Some of this show was filmed in my hometown and high school. I am considering doing a mini filming location video for the show. My parents heard they were looking for kids (minor parts/background) for a Nickelodeon show, so we stopped into the casting location (inside the gym of the high school) , but they were told I was too young (I was only 4 or 5, they were looking for 10-13 year olds) . Still pretty cool. Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" video was shot in the same high school, as well as a few other videos and shows.

I can't wait to hear you talk about this show again. This show is one of the things from my youth who made me who I am today. For me this period of my life is more than just nostalgia, it's special. It's that time where you're really developing a sense of who you are, and not who your parents want you to be. I started watching your show because I'm a TV/ lost media nerd and you've done extensive research on my favourite channel as a kid, but this and Clarissa tapped into my inner artist.

Comparing the show to a liminal space is great. Do people really think this episode is mid? For some reason I remember seeing this episode aired a lot more in comparison to all the other ones, so I feel like it became my retroactive favorite that way. The entire concept of a character that jumps through hoops before admitting he's an alien is such a Pete and Pete concept.

This show will always remain in my Top 5 of all time favorites. The characters, the premise, the soundtrack. Everything about it pushed boundaries for a kids a show and I always find myself re-watching nearly every summer/fall cause its the kid empowerment and turning the mundane into an adventure is what made it unique. But damn, that soundtrack was my exposure to indie rock in the 90s. Polaris, Drop Nineteens, Chug, The Nths. The show itself even had musical guests like Iggy Pop and Luscious Jackson. I can gush about this all day, but ill save it for the Pete and Pete episode.

I made up a term for the general atmosphere evoked by Pete & Pete, which is the same atmosphere you see in other fictional works like Edward Scissorhands, and that term is "Not Quite Reality." It refers to a fictional universe which is functionally identical to our own, but drastically different in subtle or rarely considered ways. Like how an entire neighborhood can casually acknowledge that an aluminum siding salesman is literally a supervillain, or that there's a Dracula-esque mansion across the street where a mad scientist can just make people. Bee-tee-dubs, the Mr. Swirly two-parter is the best Pete & Pete episode.

Johnny Unitas...now there's a haircut you can set your watch to. As someone who also consumed football history as a child and could also give a basic rundown of what happened in an NFL championship game from 30+ years before and name half the 1958 Colts' roster, this episode ticked a huge box. Also, shout out to the cameo from Art "HOW MUCH DOES DIS GUY WEIGH?" Donovan.

One thing special about Pete & Pete is the fact that it has this nostalgic aesthetic; and I don't mean it looks "nostalgic" in hindsight, it looked "nostalgic" at the time. Reflective. Evocative. Sentimental. Almost as if they made "The Wonder Years" and had it take place in what was then the present day. Something intended from the start to be a time capsule of an early 90s childhood. Something that would really hit the kids of the time hard once they grew up.

This show by far is another favorite of mine growing up. I remember most of the specials and pretty much all the episodes. I would of been younger Pete's age (maybe even younger) during the shows run. My all time favorite (which I'm sure is most of everyone else's) is the Mr. Tastee special "What We Did On Our Summer Vacation." I was also glad they included him in this special. I have the first 2 seasons (Which they never released the third one) and I can't remember if he was in any of the episodes from the show. Can't wait when you get to 1993 of Nick Knacks. Keep up the great work!

The angle you're approaching Pete & Pete here is super interesting, and hearing your full thoughts on the series as a whole might be the thing I'm looking forward to the most in Nick Knacks! As I've said before, I didn't have cable and my only exposure to Nick was at someone else's house. As such, I only really cared about the cartoons, Ren and Stimpy especially at the time. Also as such I regretted the HELL out of not getting into this show until I was much, much older and caught reruns of it. It's EXCELLENT! It's weird, it's wacky, it's eccentric, it's just pure magic. NONE of the Nick-coms could ever be as poignant or mesmerizing, and at least they didn't try to copy this show. Nope. We got like "Some guy who was popular on the internet show #38B." Also, I love how there's a connection between this much beloved Nick show and one that isn't looked upon as fondly. Sanjay and Craig. Will Mcrobb was one of the producers and co creators, and the show even had Toby Huss provide a couple voices. And watching Pete and Pete and Sanjay and Craig, there are weird little parallels, especially the weird man-child like adult characters in the show. Hugglebunny and Tufflips to name a few. Shame that show never got its due.

I don't have a Patreon but I have one request for a Sample. It's a controversial one simply for being a modern Nickelodeon sitcom. But not only is it infinitely better than the other recent Nickcoms, it's just as good, if not better than most of Dan Schneider's work. It's called Warped. It's essentially a buddy comedy with a savvy guy/energetic girl duo named Milo and Ruby who work in a comic book store in a mall. If you watched Austin and Ally like I have, they have the same creators so you'll immediately notice the similarities between both shows. And also of the Nickelodeon Easter eggs around the store. There's somewhat of an arc where Milo wants to write his own comic book and when Ruby comes around, she shows off her drawing talents and they decide to partner making the comic book together. Their chemistry between each other and with the other characters are surprisingly believable but maybe that's because they casted actors in their late teens/early 20s. Speaking of, we never see them go to school. We don't even know how old they are. It's also hilarious as hell. I'm in my 20s and I'm shocked at how good the jokes are and how clever the pop culture references can be at times. Especially Ruby's actress, Kate Godfrey, whose comedic timing and physical humor help make the show. It's even funny when Milo is the show's resident butt monkey. Why does Milo being the butt monkey of the show work and not for say, Freddie from iCarly? 1. It doesn't comes across as mean spirited most of the time. And even when it is, bullies like Carl always get their commupence. 2. Milo isn't annoyingly whiny about it for the rest of the episode. And yes, I ship it. I have a feeling they're not staying friends later on in the show. 1. Spoilers for Austin and Ally, the creators do the same thing where they wait until Austin's spoken for in the second season for the couple to express their feelings for each other. 2. Milo has a love interest halfway through season 1 and Ruby doesn't. 3. Ruby is the only platonic example of a manic pixie dream girl that I've seen in media. Unless any of you can name me some examples. Speaking of season 2, we don't know if the show is getting that. The sad status quo is that unless you're SpongeBob, The Loud House or a Henry Danger show (haven't watched the latter two), you're ALWAYS in danger of getting cancelled or worse, quietly cancelled. And this show doesn't have a real review on KZbin, critiquing the show. I found one for the pilot, it wasn't even a review. He just described the plot and defended himself for watching it and that's it. Again, don't have a Patreon, but maybe someone who does can make the request for me. If there's any single episode that showcases how good the show is, either Space Conflicted or Sandwiched. Bottom line, this show is really good and Nickelodeon hates good shows. So give it the attention they won't give.
