The Aeroscout, A Great FPV Platform!

Hey all! Today I take out the Aeroscout and try out FPV again! This went really well, and I wanted to share how I made this little conversion with everyone.

This isn't really a how too per say, but just a way of making this airplane RC. there are many other ways, and other types of equipment, like goggles instead of screens or different all in one camera units. This is just how I have it and I'll answer any questions best I can.

I agree, the AeroScout is a great FPV platform. That Spotter V2 is a cheap way to get started in FPV. I have two AeroScouts and plan to use one as a test bed for experiments. Preparing to hack the locked down AR631 receiver and I'll probably turn off safe and AS3X on the one for now so I can play with some flaperons and different props to see how it will do with STOL flying. I modified an AeroScout in RealFlight 9.5 RC simulator to give it flaperons and it made quite a difference so now I want to do it on the real one. Keep up the great content.

Oh wow that sounds like a lot of fun! I was thinking of doing something similar with mine, just modify and play with it and see what happens. I wish you the best of luck cause that sounds sick!!

Hey Cap'n John, what would you recommend for some inexpensive FPV goggles for that platform?

I’ve seen a lot of good things about Eachine FPV googles. From what I’ve seen they are the most affordable with a good product

Question: I would like to know if you need a separate wire to wire the camera to the receiver. Does the camera that you use come with that extra long wire? and if I have to buy it separately, what are the specifications?

It comes with the right wire, it’s about 4 inches long as is. To extend that wire you can use a regular “servo extension” wire to get some extra length. It all just plugs in right into the receiver with what’s included.

That is a standard servo extension lead connecting the camera to the receiver?

Yup! Runs off the same 5 volts that the servos do

@@CaptainJohndoes it come into play on the ground transmitter? Is there a switch associated with it? I did not realize I could get power off of my plane receiver. I bought some adapters to plug into my regular battery. But that’s more weight.

Nothing with the ground transmitter!!! I just ran mine to a channel with no commands on it. For me it was “Aux 1” and there is no switches set to it. It just takes the regular 5volts out of the receiver and no programming is required. Hope that helps, feel free to ask anything!

All the FPV gear was about 120 and the planes price varies from 150 -200

Hey, super cool video! I just got the AeroScout and the sport cub to practice since I have no experience. I got the rtf version. What else do I need to fly fpv? Is it only the screen and camera that you mentioned?

Yes, its the screen, and camera, that's all you need. Obviously you need to have power to the camera, but mine just plugs into the receivers extra port for power. thanks for the complement and I'll do my best to answer any other questions!

That's awesome. I'm a new (total noob!) Aeroscout owner and want put FPV in. How do I make sure to get a camera that will fit into that receiver? I'd like to get higher res, if possible and transmit to goggles. Do you notice any power soak from the camera? i.e. do you get lower flight times?

Thanks! I’ve put the name of the camera I used in the description, I know that works well. I believe most of these little FPV cameras can run off the power from the receiver, and you plug them in just like a servo. (I have no experience with the setups that have a camera and a separate antenna connector). Usually the separate camera and antenna setups have better video and the goggles are usually higher quality too. I’m not a total FPV expert myself, but there’s a lot of other people who may be able to give better help. Flight time did not go down a noticeable amount, maybe 30 seconds less, not a lot. I hope that helped, and I hope it wasn’t all that confusing

Where is it plugged into the receiver?

I plugged it into the last channel on the receiver, the AUX channel if I remember correctly

I pulled the wing off and checked, it’s currently plugged into channel 5, but it would work fine on 6. Just never plug it into the bind plug that could cause you some trouble

What are the flight times Captain? How many mins do get with current setup?

I get around 8 minutes, but it’s mainly due to my old battery, should be around 12 or 13 minutes.
