Thanks Brady. I stumbled across your videos a year or so ago. Always enjoy the content you put out and find them very helpful and encouraging. These lenses look absolutely sweet.

Cato or Remus? Now as a buyer I have a choice and no one is comparing the two. Sony shooter as well which makes me think the Remus.
@MoeGunz2 ай бұрын
Think it’s based off of your camera. For something like the BMC6k/Pysis the Catos are great because you have the 6:5 mode.
@noahyv2 ай бұрын
Ok but the basic math is a little lacking here... 1.77:1 * 2 = 3.54:1 not 2.7:1. And Alexa35 open gate is 3:2 or 1.5:1 so 2x on it is 3:1 not 2.39:1. You're severely underselling how much you have to crop the sensor on these lenses

Alexa 35 has a 6:5 Super 35 crop mode for anamorphic use, same with the BMCC6K/PYXIS. 2x is meant for 6:5 where you get a 2.4:1 desqueeze

FX3 is a 3:2 sensor, as are majority of mirrorless sensors. Heard this said a lot in cams video too, but it’s a 3:2 sensor that simply crops into 16:9 for video recording. Look at the FX3 and Red Komodo sensors side by side for comparison. The komodo has something around a 16:9 sensor. Fx3, 3:2.
@waynosfotoscameras2 ай бұрын
Yes true 👍 but most cameras will not let you use the full sensor when you select video.

@@Eyeofkamau yeah, you did, but do you know why having the extra height is so important for 2x anamorphic lenses?
@Eyeofkamau2 ай бұрын
@@waynosfotoscameras of course lol… That’s besides my point though, I’m simply pointing out the fact that the FX3 is not a 16:9 sensor.
@waynosfotoscameras2 ай бұрын
@Eyeofkamau no, it is the point, because you cannot use the whole sensor in video, therefore it is effectively a 16:9, which restricts the height, which you need to get the full unstretched image. Why open gate is very important for 2x anamorphic

It seems the lens is best suited in low lighting or naturally lit situations where the lens avoids direct light as much as possible. Seems quite messy with flares and bokehs. What'd you think? Is it really worth getting now despite the £400 off, or wait until they fix a couple issues with the lens, like they did with the Remus and just bite the bullet on the default price?

@@BradyBessette Oh I'm not saying they are necessarily bad, and I've been keeping tabs on these lenses for a while now. Just wondering if it's worth waiting until Blazar fixes any issues following feedback, like they did with the Remus green flares, or buy them now whilst they're cheap?

Thoughts on Remus vs Cato when it comes to 1.5x vs 2x on a camera that doesn’t offer open gate?
@waynosfotoscameras2 ай бұрын
Remus, if you see the 2x cato on a 16:9 sensor, the Cato are super skinny and wide. If you can select open gate, you film more height and when squeezed it is not so skinny. Cato for open gate, remus for 16:9. ❤
@blazaranamorphic2 ай бұрын
This will come down to taste- while it's true that 2X was traditionally meant for 3:2, 4:3 or 6:5, users who do not love the barrel distortion will find that the Cato on a 16:9 sensor cropped to 2.40 aspect ratio will look really clean and you will still get that nice 2X squeezed oval bokeh.
@waynosfotoscameras2 ай бұрын
@blazaranamorphic that is true, I just wanted to make people aware that if they use a fixed 16:9 format, they will need to realise they will lose a lot of the image with a 2x. Thanks for commenting 🙂

Go for 1.33x it will stretch to 16x9/2:41 but will have that least character. The higher up in stretch more character. If you’re okay with losing more image go for the Remus
