For anyone who might be worried about the rolling shutter, WATCH THIS. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnmmaGOed8qAnpIsi=0Jh1nPhatpjdMWzt KZbin has become this weird space where people feel the need to trash on anything that isn’t for them. Personally, I look at gear for what it can do for me cause guess what, no camera is perfect and they all serve their purpose. I’m looking for a tool, not an issue.

Blackmagic has nailed it by adopting the best of ARRI and RED, making this camera near-perfect. However, the rolling shutter still falls short-gyro data can help in post if the camera’s moving, but it doesn’t fix fast-moving objects in frame which still might be good for most productions. Low light performance is solid, though it’s not designed for run-and-gun, which isn’t expected from a cinema camera anyway! Solid stuff at an unbeatable price point is the key thing to remember here!

I’ll do a video showing the rs fix but yeah won’t fix objects obviously. I personally don’t think it matters as much as people think. Specially if you’re making content for regular audience and not jsut us KZbinrs. And if someone is mainly shooting high pace action stuff, then yeah there’s def better tools!!

@@cammackeynonsense, the rolling shutter is horrible. Just look at the footage from Kofi, it caused motion sickness. Rolling shutter is part of image quality. If this camera was so great, why wasn’t the Pocket 6K a hit? Sure, it may be great on some of the points you made but if your image gets your audience sick, all the other stuff is irrelevant. Plenty of other good cameras at this price point that will not get your audience nauseated.

@@lucapasturini4229one third of the population suffers from motion sickness. It amazes me how many people try to justify this camera with its horrible rolling shutter. This is 2024 and numerous cameras have decent rolling shutter for this price range. This camera is no better than the Pocket 6K. If you want to get your audience sick, then go ahead and buy this camera. Kofi did a video on this camera and 3/4 of his video was on the rolling shutter and he was okay with it yet his sample videos were from he back on the car with the camera being bounced around showed the worst image possible from this camera. If you get motion sickness from watching it on an iPhone then you know the rolling shutter is pretty bad. Just image how many of your audiences would be throwing up if it was ever shown on the big screen. The goal is to shoot something that would stand up being shown on the big screen and this camera falls short.

RGB peaking is across the range. I have a4 year old P4K and it still has that. I knew it was there but never use it - just checking false colour, but you've re-drawn my attention to it now and I'll definitely start referencing it too. BTW, a good set of lenses and an 1/8 black pro-mist and even the P4K has the Arri feel if nicely lit - obviously the pyxis even more so.

@@MtZionMediaProyeah I use metabones too. But I also use my Zeiss lenses without the metabones. Less (but smoother) bokeh and less light but sharper and better focus roll off. Great to have two options for each lens though.

I'm rocking my P4K still with a Metabones x.64 SB EF to MFT. I have not been able to switch from it because of how amazing BRAW is. The only thing I see worth upgrading to is either the pyxis or the Ursa G2 for Anamorphic support. Even with that, I will still use the P4K 🙌🏾

I agree. The two complaints I keep hearing from everyone on you tube about this camera are the side monitor and rolling shutter. To me they are both baseless claims. 1. No one is using there onboard cameras monitor by itself. They have some other 5-7 inch monitor so it doesn't matter. 2. Unless your filming nothing but action sequences where your whipping the camera around the entire movie, rolling shutter is a non issue. The audience has no idea what that even is. The only people that do care are people in the industry. We have to understand that no company is going to give you everything a top of the line camera has at an affordable price. For $3k this is as good as it gets.

I’ve been saying (and others) what they’re saying about the URSA G2 for years! URSA G2 has in my opinion a marketing problem, but the footage has always been an “every person’s” Alexa.

The Pyxis is the Alexa Mini LF. It's comparable to that (unlike the URSA G2) because of it's sensor size and open gate option. But yes, URSA G2 is the alexa (classic) and alexa mini (not the LF).

It's a lil bigger, sure but I've gotten plenty of jobs from people who have seen my camera at a distance and asked for my card

The alexa's just stitch together the ALEV III sensor to get bigger or smaller sensors, so they are able to share those important qualities Not so much for the blackmagic's Maybe that will change in the future if they start exclusively using their RGBW sensor with bigger/smaller cuts of it

@@christopherduran9926 Yeah of course, my enthusiasm got in the way. The Alexa sensor is far better, I'm well aware. I guess I'm just pointing out (and excited about that fact) that the Pyxis with it's open gate LF coverage, is the Subaru WRX to a 911 Turbo. Great results can be achieved for very little money, and those results in many circumstances will be indistinguishable from the Alexa Mini LF - including dynamic range.

@@mtscott44 Mini LF give far more DR than pyxis. And for many, many, many peoples, S35 is far more "suitable" format than bigger format. for many reasons. So pyxis give a very high picture quality and very efficiency codec, with "cubic" form factor. good for somes film-makers, but not for everyone.

I agree, this camera works like a charm. 2 seconds boot time, super for branded, short documentary films. I RIGed it for my documentary shoots but I also use it as overall production camera. @@cammackey I was able to play with my buddy's pyxis and compare it to my red epic dragon. The look of the pyxis exceeds it especially when paired with my remus set. In davinci I used the CST to convert the footage to arri logc4 and it made the footage pop. I am sold on it.

Really learn a lot from your content. I think the visuals of your films are fantastic and inspire me a LOT when I'm out working with clients and filming my own stuff. My only gripe with your more recent films is the voice audio is quite fatiguing to listen to. I don't know enough to say exactly what it is, but it sounds quite processed and super compressed. Earlier videos of yours don't have this, so maybe you make more adjustments in post now? Like I said though, audio is my weakest part of filmmaking so maybe it's just more 'correct' now! Again, just wanted to say I learn a lot from your films and will continue to do so!

Hey brother! Thank you for letting me know. I did music production for a decade and the standard is different from broadcast. So I will say I follow the music frame of mind more than broadcast. Broadcast has safety levels that I ignore haha. So for my own videos I tend to turn my phone down a little. Rather give the option to people to turn it up beyond what they need if they need to! You can match it it to Apple Music levels even. Not Spotify because they normalize their output so you don’t get as much quality

would like to see a comparison between the 12-bit and 16-bit (KX). Is there a big gap still or are the differences more subtle. Everyone now advertises 12-bit raw but how do they compare, canon c400/c80 and blackmagic's internal raw vs external braw and nikon's raw. Like the one you did between 10-bit and KX footage, it would be cool to really see the nuances between them.

it's very hard to show comparison between 12-bit and 16-bit because there is just few situation, with very hard "push" on files , to see anything different, apart file-size.. In fact, i just heard "16 bit is for heavy grading with FX shots" since...decades. So...

It’s the OLPF in concert with the internal BRaw. It’s surprising how few cameras using this same sensor don’t do an OLPF that’s tuned for a filmic image. The only other one is the S1H, but that doesn’t have well-integrated Raw or even I-frame codec in open gate. The only reason I haven’t ordered one is I feel there’s a “Pyxis Pro” imminent that, while more expensive, will have ND and probably V-Mount.

Man every OLPF before and after video, I haven’t seen that big of a difference.. besides a softening the image when you crop in 100%. But overall I feel like it doesn’t really make that big of a difference. So I’m curious if there’s something else to OLPF that I’m missing

@ I find it fights weird color idiosyncrasies quite effectively when they’re strong like the S1H. A LOT of OLPFs aren’t really particularly prominent in what they do. It’s about more than moire when done correctly on a video camera. They are a subtle thing, but I find it makes a difference if you’re after a filmic image.

Man my BM5 was one of the few pieces of gear I’ve bought that has last me years no matter what camera I had! Really am shocked it barely had a scratch. I remember I got the Osee 7 inch monitor and scratched the screen on its first shoot. Like legit a giant gouge. Then my smallHD screen cover was cracked within a week. Granted it’s just the cover but never replaced it cause just went back to my BM5.

The real question for me as an anamorphic shooting s5iix owner.. at the end of the day, would clients actually be able to tell a difference between pyxis and lumix footage? I get that it's about what inspires you to go out and create, and objectively pyxis footage does look better.. but the more I overthink the small details, I have to remind myself that my clients wouldn't know the difference anyways. also I actually got rid of my BMCC6k because iso 3200 was essentially unusable to me. I'm a solo shooter 90% of the time and constantly in a lot of low light situations.. for 3200 being a a "Base Iso" the noise floor is kinda wild (in a bad way) PYXIS does look awesome though, especially in the right situations. I'm not being negative, just bringing up some of my own observations as a former cc6k owner :)

No negativity sensed brother! So I was in the same boat. How I always approached it for my own client use was... if this is just going on social media.. im going to use whatever is most convenient. If this is going to any type of commercial usage, im going to use a better quality camera. Looking back, most of those brands were happy and kept hiring me. But there were an odd one or two that def favor commercial quality even for social use. Now this could stir an argument with a lot of people on here, thinking im saying you can get commercial quality from our smaller cameras. Obviously we can.. but I think the way a cinema camera makes us operate tends to make us put in more effort, feels like theres more weight behind it all simply because rigging and yada yada. So I think we just gotta use what works for the job.

Especially on commercial shoots when the "optics" of the camera you're using matters..DSLR bodies make people think lower quality right off the bat regardless of how the footage comes out. That being said, using a lumix with a rigid pro cineback or "cinerig" as they call it on set versus a pyxis, I still doubt 95% of clients would know the difference when both are rigged out, they'd just assume their both pricier setups. Just how when I had my z cam everyone assumed it was a RED, especially the way I had it built out. All I know is that if overthinking was currency i'd be rich homie lol

Can you please review the new Sony PXW-Z200 camcorder, I am really impressed by the image quality people are getting with that. Obviously not a camera for most bokeh but super versatile as a 1st camera of a beginner student filmmaker with almost every feature like internal Electronic ND, SDI out, 4 channel Audio, built in Viewfinder, Waveform monitoring etc.

I was using the YC Onion one. I tend to use it over my sachtler purely because I beat it up. All these new tripods coming out that mimic the sachtler.. they’re all great, but they all have little things that over time kinda show the quality vs the sachtler just being rock solid. The sachtler is still the best in my opinion, but the price reflects that.

There is many, many head brands, equal or superior to sachtler, sinces decades. smallrig is a just a newcomers for fluid-head. look at cartoni, miller, libec, o'connor....a good head is always some expensive, but you keep it for decades, not like a body-camera. If you have a limited budget, manfrotto friction-head is always a good choice, reliable and sturdy, at least.

Hey Nate , I have personal experience with that camera, its great and only has a 1.3x crop. The only real issue with the camera is if you want to use ff lenses and be able to capture the whole image circle of that lens. The color rendering is way better than the 6k it feels more like actual film, but it all depends on the story you are telling. Sometimes a sony is better than an arri, sometimes a bm is better than a sony it all depends on the job but blackmagic cameras are great especially when paired with actual good glass. (not sure if cam will allow a link post here but if you're curious about the image quality my reel kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKqwl3mBgJdnac0feature=shared has a mix of the 12k and a couple other cameras.)

Concerning anamorphic shooting, with the open gate sensor, would you personally see any value to shooting with a Remus set at 1.5x squeeze over a Cato set at 2x? I understand a 1.5x makes sense over a 2x on a 16x9 sensor, but what about open gate?

Oh for sure I use 1.5X on 3:2 all the time. If I had multiple deliverables that wasn’t just 2.4:1 I would most likely se 1.5X. Or if I just wanted to be as compact as possible, 1.5X. Or if I jsut wanted a hint of a more subtle look, 1.5X. Lot of reasons! I think 2X are for those who really want to go the full anamorphic look and 1.5X is a good middle ground that will still give you a great anamorphic look.

Why do you think braw in blackmagic cameras is better than with the blackmagic video asist on lumix cameras? Should it not be the same technically? I mean its braw and both cameras share the same sensor.

It’s much more than that. There’s a different between processors and processing and just because it’s the same sensor doesn’t mean it’s the same specs. Brands are able to make tweaks when placing these orders. Not really sure what that means myself haha. But yeah idk, from experience they feel and act very differently.

Theres cheat sheets and anamorphic calculators you can find online that can help you find the proper resolution to export at. anamorphic on a budget has a good one on there site.

cammackey, Pyxis is a brilliant little camera and accessible to the masses, but you should get your hands on the new Ursa Cine 12K. This shooter was recording Full Frame 12K at 90fps and 8K (downsampled from 12K) at 120fps. Most of the shots at super35 crop mode 9K 120fps and with the Canon Cine Servo 25-250 zoom lens (for the wide shots he used a Laowa 12mm). Everything shoulder mount (no tripod) and manually focusing. i understand why internal nd isnt possible/feasible with the l mount (which still makes me wuestion to switch to l mount) but black magic moving away from keeping internal nd in their cameras just seems like such a bad call to me. screw on variable nds *suck* across the board, and having to throw fixed nds into a mattebox is obnoxious

I don’t get why people say this stuff. As if blackmagic was like “we don’t believe in internal ND, we’re leaving it behind for good.” This is just how business works. Apples been doing it forever. ​@@cammackey we got the 6k full frame after the 6k pro, and that was over a year ago. where is the 6k full frame pro then? sure, i get that its a part of the tech business model to keep features at a premium, but they released the 6k pro with internal nd. that implementation has its own issues - the ir pollution is pretty noticeable. but instead of improving on that they just yanked it out and then released the 6k g2, same mount, no internal nd. 6k full frame comes out with no internal nd. they then release the pyxis which is functionally the same exact camera as the 6k full frame in a different shell. should this not be considered the "pro" version of the 6k full frame? its clearly designed to fit more into the niche that the fx6, c300, etc. fit into with the improved rigability, but without one of the most important features for a high end cinema camera (i know, its not actually a "high end" cinema camera, but BMD's whole business model has been to make pro features more accessible). im not complaining, im just not buying. and im explaining my reasoning why. BMD doesnt owe me anything, and im allowed to question a design decision that neither you or anyone else has been able to explain to me in a way that actually makes sense. i dont care about a bigger sensor and a "future proof" lens mount. i still use my bmpcc4k adapted to pl mount regularly. If those are the features they were so desperate to improve upon as opposed to the actual user experience, then im not compelled to give them my money.

I personally can't live with the RS out of this camera. I would say that the FX6 + BMVA is a more attractive option should you want BRAW. I understand that you don't consider the image to be the same or as good etc, but I think the tradeoff is a BM fully profiled sensor vs RS and much lower resolution. PYXIS' main advantage to me, is still for people like you that want to shoot anamorphic >50% of the time and want/need open gate. That is undeniably and advantage of PYXIS. The camera I'm waiting for is FX6 II, because I'm fairly certain that Sony will either have to give it a RAW codec or a 12-bit codec, either of which IMHO will be plenty to be competitive. Combined with a BMVA, finally fixing the audio on the handle issue, and having all the other things the FX6 already has (real AF, best high ISO, excellent RS, etc etc) will make it the camera to beat for my uses. Even without said camera existing the FX6 fits more into what I want to do than PYXIS. If FX6 II happens to also have open gate as well... then for me it's the best of all worlds. I think if I shot >50% narrative, then it'd start to make sense, but I actually don't want 6k or file sizes that massive. I shot ZCam for 4 years and that disabused me of any notion of wanting (or needing) a high resolution sensor. Alexa has it right with a 4.5k sensor. tl;dr- Run and gun, AF, high ISO: Sony. Narrative, open gate, BRAW: PYXIS.

I've got a hunch Sony's gonna keep internal raw reserved for their true cinema cameras in the Cine Alta line... at least until the next generation. they just added internal raw to those cameras. I think the FX line will be reserved to external raw for the foreseeable future. Whether or not it's the right move is irrelevant, They're the top dog right now and xavc is still a great 10 bit codec.

@ found Blackmagic Design PYXIS Monitor when looking at the camera. 300 bucks for a 5” monitor. Rear screens are half the size. Factor in the cost of the screens already on cameras. I know myself I’d happily pay 100-200 more for a quality rear screen. Especially on the pricier 4k-6k cameras.

Oh man that’s a loaded question. Technology is constantly advancing. But in reality, real filmmaking won’t be affected by the gear. Creative and unique story telling can be accomplished with any camera.
