John Huston is one of my favorite directors, with a 50 year career that spanned some significant stylistic and technological shifts in how movies were made, which he was always able to keep up with. He was especially renowned for somehow being able to edit an entire movie in his head before shooting a single frame, and then shooting hardly anything beyond exactly what he needed, leading to his actual editors having the easiest job of their lives. Even on his final movie The Dead in 1987, where he was seriously sick and in a wheelchair, he still hadn't lost this touch and several people remarked that he could have shot the whole film with his eyes closed if he wanted.

I remember the first time I saw this film, it was a rainy Saturday afternoon in the late 70's and this film was being shown on BBC2 (they used to show an assortment of old classic movies as an alternative to the sport being shown on BBC1), sat down to watch with little expectation. Soon however I was engrossed in this unlikely duo's trials and tribalations as they attempted to sink the Louisa. Became an instant Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Boggart fan!

Long before Ellen Ripley and Sarah Conner, there was.... Rose Sayer. There is a lot that can and has been said about this movie, but what is rarely said, especially with things are these days, this is one of the earliest strong woman in movies I know of. She takes everything Africa throws at her and doesn't back down. Even when it seems hopeless, she keeps her faith. When threatened with death by hanging, she rubs it in to the Germans just to tell them how close they came. No superpowers, no throwing heavier opponents around like it is nothing. Just an unshakable determination and faith.

She was the daughter of a doctor. Her brother committed suicide in the house and he was never mentioned again. That really messed with her emotions as you can imagine! This movie did the Germans dirty in order to tag a happy ending on the book it was based on. In the book, the German captain does try the couple as spies, but after figuring out who they really are (just a couple of civilian nuts with a crazy plan that does NOT work, not even later) he decides it wouldn't be right to execute them, and instead flies a flag of truce to hand them over to the British navy. Keep in mind that this was the first, not second world war. These were not Nazis. It's the British captain who treats Rose and Allnut like criminals, and steams back out to pursue and destroy the German ship that had just handed them over. The message of the movie is something like "love conquers all" while the message of the novel is something more like "what are you, some kind of nut?"
@katwithattitude50627 ай бұрын
I love this movie but the book it's based on was somewhat different. If I remember correctly from when I read it several years ago Charlie was more spineless. Rose made most of the decisions and Charlie followed along without much argument. They failed to blow up the Louisa and they were arrested. The African Queen does not miraculously ram the ship. The Germans somehow figured out they were the missing missionary's sister and mechanic and the captain decided it wouldn't be civilized to hang them so they were not sentenced to death. It was her idea they should get married after they are released to the British authorities and the story just...stops.

❤ Okay, Sam. This is kinda somewhat based on a thing. The boat they were after was real. A riverboat or a ferry or some sh*t. The Graf von Goetzen? The battle of LAKE Tanganyika. One of those weird war stories. I mean there were boats with names like Toutou, Mimi, and Fifi. You classic warship names. There may even be a movie about it. Oh, i mean besides the AFRICAN QUEEN. i love the miniture work in this movie. The "green screen" stuff is done with 1951 state of the art blue screen. I'm guessing it kind of freaked people out a bit. Most of those effects in old movies were matte work, traveling mattes, and rear projection. We saw a good example in AIRPLANE. Anyway, glad you saw these icons do what they always did. 100% effort. There are more classics out there, babe. Keep finding them.
