I think they're more confused about the fact that a fox had sneak attack, so I looked it up.. It's a Fading Fox, which is a CR 2 creature with a base 25 HP and 21 AC.. (I don't know if these changes for an animal companion) How the hell is that balanced against a badly wounded character at level 1? With sneak attack, it has a 2d6+1 piercing damage

But when Sydney had to roll I was sitting up, leaning over with my hands clasped like as if I was praying like as I was watching a playoff game and my team had to make the next point to stay in the game. Props to Joe for altering his initial character plan based on actual gameplay. Just seems a lot more in character to build based on experience than based on what the player initially planned. While i usually have a general idea as to what I want to do, I do often deviate based on what makes sense for the party and based on what we've experienced.

Real pity about Lucky. She needn't have died if the group was using the actual Hero Points system instead of "bottlecaps" -- Hero Points are a core part of how PF2E is balanced, which I hope comes home to Troy eventually -- but so it goes in the meantime.

Gaming question... does anyone know why it took 15 sessions and maybe a dozen combats into the campaign before they levelled up? They should certainly have been level 2 awhile ago, I would think, and possibly even level 3 by now. Did they establish at some point why they're not leveling at a more regular pace? I'm not wagging my finger at them here for "not playing right," to be clear - I'm just confused and thinking maybe I missed something.

Pathfinder and its difficulty is balanced partly around hero points... not having those rerolls makes the game harder since part of the balance is removed

I hope no-one watches this and thinks: "Yes, killing a PC in the opening minutes of a session and leaving the player to sit around for the remainder while everyone else gets to play" is a good idea. Yeah the timing can't always be helped. It is also why I always try to have a backup character ready to go. As a GM if they don't have a backup ready, I usually let them play some of the enemies just to give them something to do.
