I don't know how many people know, but if it's vertical (upright) there is a small chance the liquid metal thermal paste leaks onto the system board and shorts out. It normally takes a long time and many heating and cooling cycles, but eventually it "can" leak. So in short. Laying it flat can increase its lifespan.

I used to place my ps5 vertically, but changed it to the horizontal position. I noticed that a lot of heat also comes out of the tiny vents, which would be located on the bottom of the ps5, if you would place it vertically. Now by placing it horizontally, the air escapes much better out those tiny vents as well, making it run just a bit cooler.

I've had my ps5 for about a yr now. Originally started with the vertical position. After about 3 months in, I started getting the disc drive issue where the disc gets stuck and won't eject. Looked all over for a fix and finally came to one that said laying it horizontal could fix it. Ever since I laid it on it's side, it fixed the issue.

I find laying it down easier for storage but also stops it from heating up as easily because the fans blow to the base of the console so if its on its side the heat is pushing away from the console where as if its verticle, the heat sits at the bottom of the console.

Not only can it it be used horizontally, but it's actually the preferred orientation for all PS5 models including the latest Slim. There's a ton of reasons for this but mainly because the PS5's APU gets extremely hot and as a result, Sony used liquid metal instead of typical thermal paste between the APU and the cooler. When the PS5 is placed vertically, the liquid metal will pool at the bottom of the APU as it gets hot, which is inevitable, and the liquid metal becomes more viscous and drips down and then the sponge like material around the APU designed to prevent the liquid metal from dripping on other components and shorting something out, which is good, but without a doubt, the top of the APU will develop a dry spot, where the liquid metal is all pooled up on the bottom, being held by the sponge like material. When this happens, if the unit is still used without reapplying Liquid Metal, the top of the APU with the dry spot or drastically reduced amount of liquid metal at the top can start to oxidize, resulting in even worse thermal conductivity and this is the point where the PS5 will either be virtually unusable due to it constantly shutting down from overheating, or it may die completely. If you're running your PS5 (any model) vertically, and it's been that way for a significant amount of time and it has a good amount of play time. I highly suggest either you or someone equipped to do so, take it apart, clean it out, and clean up the pooled Liquid Metal on the APU, remove any oxidation (if applicable) and reapply the liquid metal and cooler. Then, run your PS5 in the horizontal orientation to avoid any future problems. Many people argue against this because on PC's, the CPU is always vertical and people dont have nearly as many problems with that. And that's can be for a few reasons. Mainly though, PC's usually have more adequate cooling solutions, due to the larger enclosures and more capable cooling solutions. First off, typically the only people that use liquid metal on PC's are enthusiasts and very knowledgeable regarding computers, tech, and so on, so they will be much more privy to avoiding, catching, and/or fixing these sort of things. On the other hand, consoles are used by the masses from small children, teens, to even some folks pushing 50 or above and their knowledge in regards to tech and the like vary even more than their age. As a result, consoles are typically used in environments and ways that are not ideal, like in vertical orientation and/or stuffed in a cabinet with little to no ventilation or cooling, or used on a rug or placed anwyhere possibe often being heat soaked by over devices, or in a dusty corner, in the sun, and rarely ever maintained. Conversely, PC enthusiasts will also typically use a custom water loop or some good cooling solution. Moreover, PC's CPU's don't tend to get quite as hot as the APU in the PS5 as PC's will most often have a dedicated GPU, and the modern chips are also more efficient. Moreover, the other main reason is it;s much more common and easy to dissassemble a PC to check the thermal compound or liquid metal and reapply. So usually people with liquid metal thermal compound on their CPU end up taking apart their system to check/reapply much more frequently so the issue never get's a chance to cause a real problem. Lastly, PC's have monitoring systems that are much more accessible to the user, so if any over heating does occur, the user will be aware of it right away and likely will investigate the potential cause.

I have mine horizontally, I've seen some videos with the gallium oxidizing on one end of the apu, I just assume its because the ps5 was sitting vertically and overtime gravity causes the gallium to set on one side while the other side oxidizes and loses the ability to transfer heat efficiently.

Mine used to lay on its side. Apparently it’s better for it if you play for long periods of time as playing for hours and hours with it upright can move the Liquid Metal and then it can have problems reading discs etc…

Laying it vertically upwards can cause the liquid metal to drip onto the motherboard and damage it so it’s better to lay it on its side.

The real reason you are doing the right thing by laying it down is bc of the soft metals DIRECTLY next to the power bank where it gets hottest. So if it’s standing those metals can shift around and sometimes in bad cases melt and drip on the power bank.

I've had all my playstation consoles horizontally and in all honesty, it prevents dust going in to the vents. You need to wipe the panel every now and then and clear the dust but it prevents it for filling the inside with dust

I know it can... But I do agree with others, in terms of looks, it looks weird man. The PS5 clearly was designed to stand vertically, is like people who use the first version Nintendo Wii horizontally while they have that beautiful stand.

I agree with you. I just had to lay mine on its side because it was a little too tall. It ended up blocking the bottom part of my TV screen.

@@boxiii Yeah the PS5 is really big doesn't matter how you put it... The PS5 vertical makes sesne to put beisdes your TV not underneath because most of the time it will block it unless your TV is mounted wayyy up on the wall.

It says right in the manual that playing in vertical mode could lead to damaging the disc, always lay your consoles horizontal and parallel to the disc drive

Keyword “Could” my ps2,360 and ps5 have never had issues and are all working to this day and always been vertical.You’d have to shake the console like a satanic baby while its in the disc drive and running to do damage to your disc or console.

@Doctor_Feel_Good you're probably someone who cares about their systems/games, so you'll be fine as long as there's no earthquakes. But back in the day, I was at my friend's house playing Gears 1 on his 360 in vertical mode, nobody touched it, and that console just started grinding the disc, awful crunching/screeching sound. He immediately took it out and the game was destroyed. Maybe he dropped the console beforehand and messed something up, idk. But I was right there, it just went crazy.

Did you know that you actually can use the dual sense controller without a cable. It has Bluetooth. Just discovered it after 3 years playing with my 15 inch cable. It's much more comfortable now. You need to try it.

Can confirm placing it vertically is bad and causes the thermal stuff to bug out/ power supply problems, console randomly turns off now mid game

It's actually funny. After this video was made the PlayStation 5 started having problems because the liquid metal was dripping from the processor when it was in vertical mode. 1st Gen PlayStation 5 still have that problem so if you never got it fixed and you have your PS5 up and down. You better switch it on its side real quick or open it up and replace the liquid metal with more but you have to seal it off better
