I don't think you will want the wheel, I think you blew a tire, ground down the wheel until riding on rotor then overheated rotor until bearings let loose and whole thing came off. I'm surprised nobody following you wouldn't have been paying attention enough attention to alert you to this pending disaster. I don't think it's all that uncommon for people capable of helping would help, the problem is the number of truly capable people is shrinking quickly. Our nation is really failing, in a few more generations we're toast if things don't change. I think the safest thing you should do is slow down. I know quality trailer tires have pretty high speed ratings but you should really try to stay below 65mph, better below 60 mph. Nobody likes that message but it's true, tire reliability goes up tremendously as well as fuel mileage. Travel trailers have no business traveling over 60mph.

What a level-headed couple of episodes. No click-bait, no drama, no rediculous thumbnails, etc. Very down to earth and thoughtful set of episodes. Sorry this happened, but glad it all worked out favorably. Definitely provided some food for thought for those towing vehicles, including TOADs behind Class A's. I am moving where I store my handheld temperature gun so I actually use it more often as I too have been relying too much on the temperature readings coming from the TPMS sensors. Thanks! Best...

I have to say! I love that you have two Basenji's as pet's! I myself have had one. That was a natural Squirrel hunting companion! That rarely yodeled, once he had treed the Squirrel. He mostly Pointed. Following the Squirrel around the tree. Not the typical Squirrel Dog one would Hunt with. But was beautiful to watch him work! And you couldn't ask for a better House Dog! Smart and in tune with the family. It's great to the Basenji breed gain a little more popularity.

I recently saw a tip that I plan on using. Buy a cheap aftermarket backup camera and mount it low on bumper so it shows the undercarriage of the camper. You can monitor it while driving. I've blown 2 tires and never once heard or felt anything. Didn't know till I got the dreaded car pull up next to me honk and point to my trailer. Safe travels!

I’m so glad it was not worse. You are so lucky to have it happen where it did. Kindness of the locals just shows the real goodness in people given the opportunity. It is also a testament to the MORryde independent suspension, running only on the three wheels without dragging the 4th hub. As for the TireMinder, since you did not find the wheel, you can't say it lost air, and the system was working. It was not meant for tracking runaway tires. I am so grateful for our TireMinder, it has saved us twice from what could have been disasters that could have been much worst. Even though the batteries might last longer I still change all the batteries on the TireMinder same time every year. In the end, it was a very stressful situation that was handled correctly by all involved.

I can attest to the kindness of the people of rural South Dakota. In the mid 70s, I was a Minuteman Missile Crewmember back when there was a missile wing at Ellsworth AFB outside Rapid City. Two of us left a Launch Control Center near Faith, SD one very cold winter morning for the drive back to the main base. We got a flat tire and then discovered that the motor pool had but the wrong jack in the vehicle. A local rancher stopped, picked us up, and went out of his way to take us to another LCC, saving us from a very long, cold wait in below zero conditions. This was not unusual. The locals would often help out AF personnel traveling in the missile field, particularly during the harsh, cold, winters.

Thank you for your service! I was a teen in the 70’s with parents going cross country on Vacation. We were in a medium sized Nebraska city, I guess looking confused. The engine was running rough and we were looking for a service station. Lady pulled up next to us while rolling down the road and demanded my dad pull over. Dad pulled over. Lady got out of her car walked up and says I see you’re from out of state searching for something. What do you need? One mile down the road she sent us on we found a mechanic. Loose wire on the coil. Took 10 minutes and no charge:)

This has happened to us twice. Six months after our install we had to leave our camper on the side of the highway and then install an entire beam assembly and everything that attaches to it. Then last summer we had a brake caliper bracket explode that took out another beam assembly, wheel, bearings, caliper and again, everything in that assembly. MorRyde was very responsive and cannot say enough of how much we appreciated their response.

All trailers have very similar parts here, and bearing failures are really common. I had a very similar failure with a tow dolly behind our motorhome. I heard and felt a bang, looked back to see the wheel and tire drift across the highway, bounce off the median guardrail, and cross the highway again to go off into the woods. A very astute trucker held back traffic while the wheel made its dangerous journey. Like these folks, I hunted for the wheel and never found it, despite a fence just inside the woods.

South Dakota does have the best people. Our daughter is in college in Spearfish. Upon dropping her off 4 years ago (we are from IL) met a woman from the town at a coffee shop, she exchanged numbers with our daughter and said if there was anything she ever needed to let her know. So nice! Then this past Christmas as she was making the 14 hour drive back to school from IL she got a flat tire. She was 3 hours from Campus. She called a friend that lives in Wall who in turn called some friends that were in her area. They jumped in their car, came and put her spare on for her. She we able to drive to a large truck stop where her friend drove to meet her, left her car there but took the bad tire with them back to Wall. Next day she was able to borrow his truck and drive the 30 minutes to Walmart to get it fixed, then he drove her back the hour to the truck stop and put the new tire on for her. She has met amazing people in South Dakota. So glad you had the same experience. Safe travels!

I'm glad everything worked out without serious consequences. Those TPMS sensors have a limited range, and Irene showed it was still transmitting, which means it was in the vicinity of where you stopped, not a mile up the road where the rotor was found. I would guess it was within 300 feet of where you stopped. You showed that it "finally" showed a lost signal after you moved away from the spot you had stopped along the road to check the flapping fender skirt.

We had similar experience. Lost 2 wheels off of our 34 ft 5th wheel. After investigating it was due to overtightening of the lug nuts and twisting the studs on the hub. The studs completely sheared off (this is not what happened with yours). We had no idea when we lost the first tire. We lost the second tire while getting off on the exit ramp. Thankfully we found a tech at a nearby campground to help us. No one got hurt and we were back on the road within 24 hours. No damage to the axle (miracle). We could only find one of the wheels. We ended up having to replace all the wheels because they discontinued that particular rim. Small price to pay in the larger scope of things. Needless to say, we both have a touch of PTSD when staring out on a trip. Also, TireMinder also failed us on both tires. Thanks for sharing your story!

I’m betting the wheel & hub assembly came off the spindle long before where the rotor was found in the burned area. The rotor was probably held in place by the caliper and was separated from the hub assembly. Of course finding the wheel and tire would be nearly impossible to find cuz you don’t know where it came off. Most importantly are the blessings of amazing local residents who offered a place to stay and help to put everything back together. There are truly great people out there! 🙏🏻 So thankful you’re safe!

There are great people in this country ready to help at the drop of a hat. My mobility cart carrier broke off the rear of the RV and everything rolled to the side of highway 1 in Maine. The closest town had about 50 residence no phone and it was a Sunday around 10am. A mile later a couple stopped with their pickup to tell me it was gone (I did not have a camera at that time). He took me back to retrieve it and to my surprise (like you) he had a welding shop about 10 miles away. He took the cart and carrier in the back of his pickup and I followed him to his home. In 4 hours he had it all welded and re-enforced and back on the Rv. He didn't even want payment but I did prevail somewhat and later sent him a new welding blanket which he did not have. Sometime God really looks out for travelers and puts people in your path that you are so grateful for. I was concerned since I had the IS installed on my RV this last summer so I was hoping for a reason for the failure. I hope it was just a fluke... and have an uneventful trip to your destination... It's just amazing how well your rig was able to handle the complete loss of the tire and hub. We had an issue a couple of years ago where a piece of road debris wrapped around our front tire on our class C and caught the TPMS device on the valve and ripped it and the valve off. We were lucky as I saw a flash of something flying in the side view mirror and was able to slow down and pull off the side of the highway. But the same TPMS you have never alarmed even though the tire monitor was gone and about a mile behind us somewhere. We're in a new 5th wheel now and using what I hope is a better brand TPMS that is integrated into the tires. Had great help from a local tire shop and had the tire completely replaced in a couple of hours and our stop for the night helped us out as well with arriving after dark (a local farm that even brought over some of their wares to our RV). It's always great to see how many people are willing to help when times are tough.

I had a similar incident way back in 1976. Just a young pup at the time but learned my lesson well. 4th of July and on the side of the hwy. Wheel just hanging on; EXTREMELY hot. Single axle trailer, so I wasn't going anywhere. 20 miles from a auto parts store. Making several round trips to attempt parts to put it all together. 12 hours later I got a tow truck to tow it . Since then I am absolutely emphatic about packing bearings, good tires and checking the hub & tire temps EVERY time we stop.

Thanks for a great video! Glad everything worked out so well. I wouldn't get dead set on it being a temperature related issue that got the ball rolling. I've seen tires blow instantly off of a debris strike or something hitting it just right, and the driver doesn't know. Driving on shredded rubber, then rim, then the heat seizes the rim, and so on. I'd say it's in the bucket of possibilities. The great story here is how the locals took care of you! Thanks again!

I have a 770 series TPMS from Truck Systems Technology that does real time monitoring of temperature and pressure. I have been making the assumption that I would be able to see a significant temperature increase if a wheel bearing was frozen or brakes were locked on a wheel. I know I can see a temperature and pressure delta on the tires that are on the sun side vs the ones running in the shade. I am now going to carry my heat measuring gun to see what the TPMS is saying vs what the gun says on the wheel and drum. I did have trouble loosing a signal for the tire monitor and the alarm went off very quickly. I fixed the problem by adding a signal extender in the 5th wheel no more loss of signal. Safe travels we enjoy your channel very much good job.

You are so lucky in so many ways. We were in Idaho last fall pulling our 2023 Rockwood minilite 2516s . Travel day and we were in about 45mins into our drive when we lost a tire and the remaining tire could not hold the weight and it blew out. Started swaying horribly. We lost control of the camper. It flipped on its side and we ended up off the highway.

In the fall of 2023 we were on a winding mountain road in Dolores, Colorado. We were about one hour from our destination to Ouray, Colorado. My husband noticed a lot of smoke in his side view mirror coming from our travel trailer. There was no where to pull over. I felt panicked until we saw a random field with about 6 RVs parked there. Feeling blessed we pulled in to check out the situation. The campers there were eager to try and help us. My husband noticed the outer wheel bearing was smoking. It was close to 5 pm and the only parts store in this small town was about to close. We had to spend the night in that field with no hook ups. The next day my husband was able to get the parts and make the repairs. We were then back on our way to Ouray. We made it to Ouray and enjoyed an amazing week there. On our long drive back to Louisiana while making a turn my husband noticed that same tire wobbling. Blessed again he was able to pull into a brand new unoccupied truck stop. He crawled under the RV and saw that the axle was bent. He called a business in the area that was willing to build us a new axle. He removed the bent axle. We unhooked from the RV and drove about 20 minutes to pick up the new axle. Drove back and he installed the new axle. Needless to say my husband is very handy. I know I missed some details but this comment turned out to be longer than I meant it to be. By the way we met you both a few months before this at The RV Unplugged Rally.

Wow, what a freaky situation. I can only imagine of seeing the wheel gone and to think the fifth wheel never shuddered or swayed when it happened and all the awful things that could have happened but didn’t! How wonderful to see the kindness of strangers who came to your rescue. I never thought you’d be back on the road so quickly. We have TPMS on our rv but haven’t used our temp gun on the tires, etc., good tip. So glad you and the pups came through this ok!

So thankful you guys and all of SD are alive and safe. We've been on pins and needles to see whether or not you'd find the tire, etc.; so glad you were able to get things fixed and get back on the road. I had a situation in my early 20's where a gas station attendant (this was mid-70's, gas station attendants checked your oil) left the cap off the oil reservoir and sent me across the street because the other station had the right oil (I know, life was very different then!). I noticed the attendant at the other station coming toward me with a fire extinguisher and didn't know what had happened; the oil had blown all over the engine and had caused a fire (the smoke was carried under the hood and out the front and around so I never saw it). There was a guy they all knew up the hill a ways (way out in the country at that point) who might be willing to clean the engine for me so I could get on my way--it was about 7 or 8pm on a Sunday night and I had about 60-70 miles to go to get back to school. I limped it to the guy's house and he was ready for me, cleaned it up and wouldn't take any payment. If I wind up with Alzheimers I doubt I could ever forget that act of kindness. You guys are definitely grace under fire here, so good onya and so glad it worked out well. Hope you're enjoying the Badlands and wherever else you might be by this time! ❤️

They probably didn't even feel it. Years ago i had a bearing failure on a single axle trailer, the only thing left holding the hub/disc and tire assemble on was the spindle nut. I never felt a thing in the truck, if not for another motorist alerting me i never would have known until it failed completely.

I especially appreciate the end of the video where you bring your thoughts all together , well done ! I have not read all the comments , but I would add the one remaining wheel bearings carried the load . Might want to inspect and or replace those. So glad things worked out… you both were truly lucky and blessed by the kindness of others in that small town.

To say you were blessed would be an understatement between the location, people who came to your aid, ability to park at the shop, solar to aid in the camping arrangement, warranty covering items, and quick work doing the install at the shop. All I can say is wow! No one wants to have an rv issue but it seems if you had to have one it couldn’t have worked out any better. Glad you’re safe and back on the road.

Glad to see the super conclusion to last weeks cliff hanger. Been thru the area before, beautiful but not a lot of emergency services. Looked like great folks though, as usually found in these rural areas around the country. Broke down in Clayton, NM. Blew a turbo on my motorhome, took 13 days to finally get the correct parts & repairs made. Met a lot of really great folks (Thanks Keith @ Coyote Keiths campground for all the help), and ate very good food from a food truck, Subway & a couple of other places. Glad the world is right again, safe travels.

I'm very happy for you guys, that everything turned out as it did. The only one advice I would have is to replace the other tire as well due to possible stress from holding the weight of the rig after the other tire was gone. Good luck on you adventures.

i'm so sorry this happened to you! Your story reminded me of the guardian angels that were driving behind me when a deer hit my car at night on the road between Theodore Roosevelt NP and Belle Fourche SD. 2 hours from everywhere, they happened to be towing a car trailer and happened to be going to Deadwood, where we were staying. I was so grateful for their help and still keep in touch. It's hard not to believe in divine intervention when things fall in place like that! On the other hand, did you look around Draper for that red truck 😂😂

I love watching your videos here from England and felt so bad for you! It's a terrible feeling when big things like that go wrong but you were so lucky to have those people to help. I was on vacation in the US in 2002 and my suv skidded off the road after hitting some black ice into deep snow in a place called Driggs, Idaho. I was in the car with my wife and three year old son wondering what to do, as we were in the middle of nowhere. Then, just like a miracle two ladies came past and stopped in a Toyota truck. They hitched a rope to our car and pulled us out, told us where we could get a coffee to calm down and were off on their way...someone was looking over us that day. BTW American Pie by Don Mclean was playing on the radio with the line "this 'll be the day that I die" I couldn't listen to that song again for 20 years 🤣. Good luck with the rest of your travels 🍀

Reminds me of our breakdown in rural Kansas in 2020. Water pump went out on our Winnebago diesel pusher. When the tow truck driver disconnected the driveline, he found that the differential was going out too. He towed us to a small repair shop in Hays who let us spend the night in their yard, and replaced the water pump the next day. But the differential was a non-standard one that Freightliner used for a week in 2010 because of part shortages. Then, way out of production, no repair parts available. A local machine shop was able to build us a brand-new custom differential in a week. We had a pleasant, but stressful week touring the Hays area before continuing on our journey. We are thankful for the great, skilled people everywhere.

This same thing happened to a truck pulling a 5th wheel that was passing me in New Mexico not too far out of Albuquerque this past November (2024). I kept hearing *scrape* *scrape* *scrape* I looked out of my driver's window as the trailer passed me and saw the same wheel you lost scraping against the pavement periodically. I sped up and honked and waved the driver down, pulled in front and motioned for him to pull over. I've thought of him since then and hope he got the kind of help you did. It's interesting it was the exact same placement, though. I'm glad you and your rig came through this safely.
