The AH-1Z Viper is the Marine Corps’ primary rotor-wing ground attack aircraft. The AH-1Z attack helicopter provides rotary wing close air support, anti-armor, armed escort, armed visual reconnaissance and fire support coordination capabilities under day night, and adverse weather conditions.
The AH-1Z Vipers is fielded in Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadrons, or HMLAs. Detachments from the HMLAs are deployed as part of Marine Expeditionary Units to support ship-based amphibious exercises and operations.

Been working on the new platform for a while. It is quite the machine. My favorite thing is being within twenty feet of a takeoff and feeling the raw power of its rotor wash. I have the utmost respect for the men and women who fly these constantly. It’s tiring and taxing as they do it so well. Don’t even get me started with the maintenance crews. Talk about hard workers.

How much could be saved by eliminating the humans? (Drone) Besides the obvious human factors (salaries, more conservative missions, human exhaustion, etc) you wouldn't have to have as much armor. It could be made smaller and faster, and lighter. Or use the space for guns and gas.

Iran has done that to several of our drones already, they now have direct Chinese support for tech. With drone warfare you don't hit the assets you destroy the Command Control Apparatus (Where the people are). I was a Crew chief on a CH-47, I have seen what happens just waiting for the balloon to go up. This shit is not a video game with a reset button. I spent a couple years as a avionics tech for AH64A and AH64D. I know a bit about most of the systems on older Cobra but would love to get behind the wires and sensors on an AH1-Z to see how upgraded they are. Just going from a AH64A and D variant was a huge step. The switchology and MFDs in the 1Z bear a very strong resemblance to the AH64D.

Russias choppers are the ugly variant of scary, even if the avionics aren’t as good, love how China copied the Blackhawk, that is one epic platform, the way bell is editing it is (I think) criminal, the vipers are I minimalistic solution to CAS without being offensive to it, I think it’s suited to that role over the Apache, I’m not sure what the role of the Apache really is, because it’s not like a chopper can take a hit and carry on loitering, so more armour only puts the pilots in a place of misguided comfort, it’s bigger, it’s louder and if your mission was to level a small town or large convoy in 5 minutes it’s got a purpose, but really I think the cobra could do the same, without being so bold.

October 1983. My boss same day sent me to Hughes Aircraft in Tuscon where I received 1 day training with new equipment on how to calibrate the launchers, the gun, and helmet sight system on the AH-1T. Immediately flew to MAG 29 at Camp LeJuene to train marines on the new maintenance. They informed me of the intense firefight in Beruit after the marine baracks was blown up. They were readying for emergency deployment. Didn't want to let them down. We hustled and got several but not all Cobras calibrated in time. Total blackout in the media just how intense the fighting was.

I got to see the first Super Cobra (to be called AH-1W) when I was stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton, back in the 80's (HMA 169, I think now HMLA 169). It was a retrofitted/modified AH-1T Cobra. One of the good things about these cobras, was their maintenance records, uptime and downtime being better, (at the time), than the Apache, which was fairly new, back then (Which was explained to me by some of the pilots). Flight line mechanics I spoke to mentioned it was designed with the mechanic in mind, meaning it was easier to work on, and access the components.

If the AH64 is superior in performance, sign me up. That said, I must ask how well, and how long that performance can be sustained, without significant maintenance. How much of a supply/re-supply chain must be arranged, to keep the Apache vs Cobra in fighting readiness? What is the cost, in parts/man-hours, to keep each of those machines battle ready? If I had to choose, I would opt for whichever machine could attain the greater level of combat readiness.

I presume the Apache has more combat solutions with the longbow designator, but it’s heavier, from most of the vids I’ve seen the choppers aren’t exactly flying over the heads of the enemy, keeping a safe enough distance with the aim to take the chopper back home, the cobra being lighter and smaller there’s more room on the boats that transport them, but the Apache can lift a lot more weight which is something that can be useful, personally I think both choppers are not perfect, but each has a role they were designed for over the other, the new Blackhawk with the tail rotor I looks bad too, the west struggles with birds, too focussed on fixed wings.

Your first comment is likely due to the fact that the Apache and A-10 get most of the spotlight because they are Army and Air Force aircraft. The Viper and its predecessors are Marine aviation aircraft. Marine machines definitely don't get the spotlight and the Marine Corp generally gets the short end of the stick when it comes to equipment. Now as far as the Viper being the "most advanced", I'm not gonna defend that claim. Lol.

As a Cobra pilot, I'll say that we practice CAS about 80-90% of the time we fly. It's our bread and butter and the AH-1Z is a great CAS platform. The 64 makes a better deep air support platform (in my opinion), with their longbow radar and UAS control. As mentioned above, the TSS is most likely the best sensor currently employed on any helicopter in the world.

Maybe not in my life time but before 2100 that's where warfare will be, who ever is mass producing the cheapest but most effective drones that are more expendable than a human. That is a super scary thought, because people will be more inclined to go to war, who cares about the loss of a drone.

The role of the new Cobra is for air support of Marine Corps amphibious assault operations. The Apache is in support of Air Cav and Armor if I am not mistaken. About the only difference, technologically, between the two is the Apache's digital connectivity. Which is something that, given the size of the Vipers in service with the USMC, isn't practical for the Viper to have. They're also not meant for the exact same roles. The Viper is a true CAS asset. The Apache is a true hunter/killer asset that can also perform CAS. I would agree that the Viper isn't necessarily "superior" to the Apache, however, I wouldn't say the Apache is superior to the Viper either.

The Comanche program was canceled in February 2004 under President Bush, a full two years before Obama was even elected. Besides that, the decision to cancel came from within the Army due to doctrinal changes, experiences in Kosovo, ballooning contract and per/unit costs in addition to a host of serious technical problems.
