In 2005, 4 AD Regt brought their vehs out to CFB Edmonton to trial a new integration concept for the system in the Army moving forward (asymmetric warfare). I don't know what canned the ADATS but the last time I saw it deployed was in 2012 on a Combat Team Commanders Crse in CFB Wainwright. A buddy of mine in 4 AD said it was the last time they would be used before they were retired. 4 AD Regt now is largely UAV/target acquisition or was before I retired. Definite loss of capability, the ADATS would be a capable asset to Canadian and NATO units deployed in the Baltic States.

I would love to see a low profile tank, say an m1 Abrams without the turret, with an unmanned turret on top. I would take and adapt some of the technology in the mast system that replaced the Periscope on the Virginia class and I would add the longbow radar from the Apache. And then put six to eight hellfire missiles on the turret. You could do with a three-man crew you pull back to a vehicle with a reload crew. Along the lines of the mlrs. Come to think of it you could even do a box launcher for the hellfires. Drop them off load them up and go back on the line. Between the low profile and the fire and forget, you could kick some serious butt. Keep the vehicle hold down extend the mast and it is a digital system that can see no matter what the conditions are. Or you could raise the longbow a couple feet, acquire the target, and then launch off the box launcher. As soon as the missiles away you scoot to another spot. they would never see you they would just see dust and smoke at best.

Pain to work on (mechanically) but seemed to be a good piece of kit. It would need a gun these days as the missiles would be overkill for a drone. I think the dual 35 mm orlikon(sp?) ground trailer was hooked into the system but need to talk to a Bird Gunner for full capabilities. We need SO much more capability that has been gutted.
@abchaplin3 жыл бұрын
The Oerlikon GDF-005 and Skyguard Mk II were in the same batteries but not the same troops. We used gun/Skyguard only in airfield batteries. The ADATS troops would deploy beyond the fence to give depth to the defence. Gun/Skyguard did not have the mobility to keep up with a brigade group. That said, with its AHEAD ammunition, there are few systems more capable against drones.

I can't comment on the actual missile system however, I can comment on the chassis chosen by Canada. The M113 chassis was a horrible platform for this system. The vehicle harmonic vibration from the tracks, while running at speed, caused huge problems within the electronics over time and the rotational forces from the turret rotation was actually twisting the M113 chassis, to the point that the rear ramp wouldn't fit properly. That aside, the subsystems for the gas turbine assembly were at best substandard in construction and techs on the ground (me) had to perform "innovative" repairs (that the engineers said were impossible and shouldn't work) to get the system up to any kind of reliable standard. On top of that, the $ markup of parts by Orlikon sold to the Cdn gov was obscene. For example, the gas turbine engine starter from Sunstrand Turbomach was $1600 US, but Orlikon was billing DND $8k cdn for it. Like other Canadian systems, it was subverted by greed and political ineptitude.

Well, these armoured systems tend to be so expensive (the German Gepard springs to mind), that you are better served with platoon of tanks - doing tank stuff. Personally I prefer to have TOW's on the infantry fighting vehicles and supplement that with a mashine canon of - say - 30 mm. If you have low flying hostile aircraft (like the A-10) you will not see them on radar before it is to late for an engagement. What you need is a heads up from the awacs or something similar with expected direction and a time frame for the platoon commander to give out the order to turn the turrets in the right direction and by sight fire the devil out of the mashine canons. Aircraft do not take kindly to transverse a cloud of shrapnel. Besides that your vehicles will be so widely dispersed that close air support is not really a thing. You can have helicopters and higher flying aircraft trying with guided weapons. But that is more the job for an integrated air defence system. Personally I think man portable Stingers are more appropriate. What the Danes are doing is putting the anti aircraft missiles on their frigates and park them in the city square. The real role of the short range air defence is to "lift" low level intruders to where the fighters can see them and slug them with their missiles. The point being that a fighter aircraft will have forward motion that will give the missile a forward boost - and eliminate the need for a booster. There might be an argument for the system in airfield defence - which is a KNOWN target; but these airfields are generally located so far back that it will be little help to the artillery, infantry and cavalry.

Considering those missiles carry shaped charge warheads that are likely alot heavier than your typical blast fragmentation warhead on a dedicated SAM, aside from helicopters, I wonder how effective this system would be at intercepting smaller targets like medium altitude drones, cruise missiles, and other PGMs in a point defense role? Like, would it really have been that great of an purpose air defense system or only really be useful against low flying helicopters? Honestly being able to hit drones, missiles and standoff guided munitions is alot more relevant today than protecting tank collums from hordes of soviet hinds.
