The Oerlikon/Martin Marietta Air Defense Anti Tank System (US designation MIM-146 ADATS) is a dual-purpose short range surface-to-air and anti-tank missile system based on the M113A2 vehicle. The ADATS missile is a laser-guided supersonic missile with a range of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), with an electro-optical sensor with TV and Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR). The carrying vehicle also has a search radar with an effective range of over 25 kilometers (16 miles).
The first firing of an ADATS missile occurred in June 1981. Canada was the launch customer for the system with 36 Units on the M113 chassis ordered for the Canadian Army in 1986. The system was further developed and produced at a new facility in Québec. The US Army also selected ADATS installed on the M2 Bradley chassis but by the time it was ready for service the ending of the Cold War led the US Army to cancel its orders, after Oerlikon invested over CHF 1 billion in the project. A small number of vehicles, many of them the developmental prototypes, entered service with the Canadian Army.
ADATS was trialed or proposed on a variety of different platforms to suit the needs of the user for the defense of mobile field formations or fixed sites such as airfields. Besides the M113A2 tracked vehicle chosen by Canada, ADATS was also installed on the M2 Bradley chassis for the US Army and the Swiss MOWAG Shark 8x8 vehicle, and proposed for the British Warrior MICV chassis. A shelter mounted version either with on-mount radar for autonomous use, or without radar for coordination with a central fire control center could be mounted on a 4x4 or 6x6 military truck or installed in fixed locations. This version was purchased by Thailand. A version mounted on the 4 wheel trailer used for the Oerlikon Contraves Skyguard fire control system and without radar, probably intended for integration with Skyguard and Oerlikon GDF 35mm guns, was also proposed.
There was also a proposed naval version called Sea Sprint using the standard 8-missile turret minus the radar, proposed for the close-in anti-air and anti-missile self-defense role.
Oerlikon also suggested a dedicated anti-tank system without the radar, including a version mounted on a long articulating arm that could be elevated high above the vehicle to clear trees or terrain while the launch vehicle remained hidden.
ADATS entered service with the Canadian Army (in 1989) as a mobile, M113 based system. First systems were deployed as part of Canada's NATO contribution in West-Germany. 36 systems were delivered by 1994. Cost of the system was initially $650 million. Over the life of the project, total cost reached $1.1 billion. After their return from Germany, Canadian ADATS systems were only operationally deployed once: In June 2002, they were used to defend the airspace of the G8 summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta. Canadian ADATS were never operationally deployed in Bosnia or Afghanistan. As 31 March 2011, the ADATS has been withdrawn from Canadian service with no planned replacement announced.
Canadian acquisition of the ADATS system was marred by a scandal relating to the purchase of the land where assembly of the system was to take place. The property had been bought and sold several times over a short period of time and its price inflated before it was sold to Oerlikon.
Hope you enjoy!!

Also if anyone is looking for a squad server that is organized and hard-core without being over the top id look for the tcg server when its on. Its not been very active lately but I think it's going to change once V2 releases especially because our ARMA milsim unit just reduced our number of ops per week so I have a feeling most of us will be playing a lot more squad.

As always Mats great video, if a little bittersweet. I had some exposure to the ADATS in the Cdn Army as Mech Inf (1PPCLI). In 2005, 4 AD Regt brought their vehs out to CFB Edmonton to trial a new integration concept for the system in the Army moving forward (asymmetric warfare). I don't know what canned the ADATS but the last time I saw it deployed was in 2012 on a Combat Team Commanders Crse in CFB Wainwright. A buddy of mine in 4 AD said it was the last time they would be used before they were retired. 4 AD Regt now is largely UAV/target acquisition or was before I retired. Definite loss of capability, the ADATS would be a capable asset to Canadian and NATO units deployed in the Baltic States.

It was a doomed system given the chassis it was mounted on and the Orlikon $ markup on the cost of parts. Even back then, we said it needed to be mounted on a heavier chassis (Leo 1 or 2?) , due to vibration and torsional loads due to turret rotation.

I would love to see a low profile tank, say an m1 Abrams without the turret, with an unmanned turret on top. I would take and adapt some of the technology in the mast system that replaced the Periscope on the Virginia class and I would add the longbow radar from the Apache. And then put six to eight hellfire missiles on the turret. You could do with a three-man crew you pull back to a vehicle with a reload crew. Along the lines of the mlrs. Come to think of it you could even do a box launcher for the hellfires. Drop them off load them up and go back on the line. Between the low profile and the fire and forget, you could kick some serious butt. Keep the vehicle hold down extend the mast and it is a digital system that can see no matter what the conditions are. Or you could raise the longbow a couple feet, acquire the target, and then launch off the box launcher. As soon as the missiles away you scoot to another spot. they would never see you they would just see dust and smoke at best.

Pain to work on (mechanically) but seemed to be a good piece of kit. It would need a gun these days as the missiles would be overkill for a drone. The Oerlikon GDF-005 and Skyguard Mk II were in the same batteries but not the same troops. We used gun/Skyguard only in airfield batteries. The ADATS troops would deploy beyond the fence to give depth to the defence. Gun/Skyguard did not have the mobility to keep up with a brigade group. That said, with its AHEAD ammunition, there are few systems more capable against drones.

I can't comment on the actual missile system however, I can comment on the chassis chosen by Canada. The M113 chassis was a horrible platform for this system. The vehicle harmonic vibration from the tracks, while running at speed, caused huge problems within the electronics over time and the rotational forces from the turret rotation was actually twisting the M113 chassis, to the point that the rear ramp wouldn't fit properly. That aside, the subsystems for the gas turbine assembly were at best substandard in construction and techs on the ground (me) had to perform "innovative" repairs (that the engineers said were impossible and shouldn't work) to get the system up to any kind of reliable standard. On top of that, the $ markup of parts by Orlikon sold to the Cdn gov was obscene. For example, the gas turbine engine starter from Sunstrand Turbomach was $1600 US, but Orlikon was billing DND $8k cdn for it. Like other Canadian systems, it was subverted by greed and political ineptitude.

Russia has just brought out their own version of ADATS, very similar performance, so the system was way ahead of what has been available in the intervening period.

Well, these armoured systems tend to be so expensive (the German Gepard springs to mind), that you are better served with platoon of tanks - doing tank stuff. Personally I prefer to have TOW's on the infantry fighting vehicles and supplement that with a mashine canon of - say - 30 mm. If you have low flying hostile aircraft (like the A-10) you will not see them on radar before it is to late for an engagement. What you need is a heads up from the awacs or something similar with expected direction and a time frame for the platoon commander to give out the order to turn the turrets in the right direction and by sight fire the devil out of the mashine canons. Aircraft do not take kindly to transverse a cloud of shrapnel. Besides that your vehicles will be so widely dispersed that close air support is not really a thing. You can have helicopters and higher flying aircraft trying with guided weapons. But that is more the job for an integrated air defence system. Personally I think man portable Stingers are more appropriate. What the Danes are doing is putting the anti aircraft missiles on their frigates and park them in the city square. The real role of the short range air defence is to "lift" low level intruders to where the fighters can see them and slug them with their missiles. The point being that a fighter aircraft will have forward motion that will give the missile a forward boost - and eliminate the need for a booster. There might be an argument for the system in airfield defence - which is a KNOWN target; but these airfields are generally located so far back that it will be little help to the artillery, infantry and cavalry.

A system like this would be of great use in Ukraine, they have need of AA/Missile systems, especially the SHORAD type, as well as Anti-tank, that is not a MANPAD system. Canada should donate these mothballed systems.

Probably the best Short Range Air Defense Missile System built in North America, even today. Compared to the attempts to attach some re-purposed Hellfire missiles to some launch platform that is never just right or the various Stinger missile launcher vehicle designs. And in the end they just buy a handful of Israeli Iron-Dome missile launchers or attach the 20mm Phalanx CIWS to a truck in the US.

ADATS is the reason why Oerlikon-Bührle came into financial trouble and had to sell its defence sector Oerlikon Contraves Defence to Rheinmetall. Oerlikon nearly went bankrupt because of ADATS.

Another brilliant piece of kit, made pointless (in some people's minds) by the end of the cold war. Thankfully while these are no longer in service, they aren't gone gone, and are just in mothballs at this point in time. Although if we needed to use them again, anyone that knew how to use them are long gone. Best friend crewed these, and started his military career off in the ADATS back in the early '90s, and ended as a Det Commander before remustering. Their motto was if you can see it, you can kill it. Which is why they bragged that they could take out a stealth fighter if they saw one. Mind you that stealth fighter would have to be right on top of them and below 10000m....but still.

@Matsimus The Russian terminator is somewhat useless. They should have marreged Derivatsya 57 mm with Terminator in order to make something like ADATS. Think of it: 2x 57 guns could ba based on T-90 chassis if not then put it on Armata platform along with some missiles (SS2A and S2S).

The ADAT's system is still superior to other systems now in use. It's speed, Versatility and Modular Conformity are still second to none... ^~^ But as you eluded to it's always a congressional battle for the purse-strings as to what gets fielded and what doesn't... o_0 Just remember kiddies your weapon was built by the "Lowest" bidder, not necessarily the "Best" maker... >_
