The USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the lead ship of the Nimitz-class, one of the largest warships in the world. Named after Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, a prominent figure in U.S. naval history during World War II, the USS Nimitz was commissioned on May 3, 1975.
This immense vessel measures approximately 333 meters (1,092 feet) in length and has a flight deck width of around 76 meters (252 feet). It displaces over 100,000 tons fully loaded and can travel at speeds exceeding 30 knots (about 56 km/h), powered by two nuclear reactors that provide virtually unlimited range.
The Nimitz carries a complement of over 5,000 personnel, including aircrew and ship's company, and is capable of operating a diverse air wing of 70+ aircraft, including fighter jets, electronic warfare aircraft, and helicopters.
Designed for longevity, versatility, and global power projection, the USS Nimitz has played a vital role in numerous U.S. Navy operations, ranging from combat missions to humanitarian relief efforts. With decades of service, it remains a cornerstone of U.S. naval strength and a symbol of American military innovation.
