In San Antonio a ragtag army of settlers and ranchers struggle against the troops of Mexican leader Gen. Santa Anna (Raul Julia). The Texans, led by Col. William Travis (Alec Baldwin) and frontiersman Jim Bowie (James Arness), are forced to hold off Santa Anna's armies at an abandoned mission called the Alamo. Greatly exceeded in firepower by the Mexicans, the besieged soldiers of the Alamo wage their final heroic battle as reinforcements are gathered.
The production was shot at Alamo Village, the Alamo replica in Brackettville, Texas built by John Wayne for his lavish 1960 film The Alamo. Also, much of the footage of the final battle scene was recycled from earlier films. Originally aired on January 26, 1987.

This movie is extremely inaccurate. You need to watch the one from 2004. It actually focuses way more on debunking the myths and focusing on accuracy to the actual battle. Including the Battle of San Jacinto.

Not a bad movie- Raul Julia did an excellent job of portraying Santa Anna, wish it had gone on to show his defeat like they do in the 2004 version, which is my favorite Version with Dennis Quaid & Billy Bob Thornton - It's EPIC, and the commentary by 2 Historians is almost better than the movie! AMAZING. if you like Alamo Movies, you gotta see that one.

I saw this when it came out in 1987, proves how old I am, my GGG-grandfather was brother to legendary confederate general John bell hood who led the famous Texas Brigade from bull run to Gettysburg, wounded july 2,1863 @ devils den and again in September 20,2863 @ Chickamagua, went on to command the Army of Tennessee and his biggest disaster @ Franklin and Nashville in 1864.

I saw this on tv in 1987, they took many scenes from Last Command 1955, though this movie sort has a sequel, the First Texan 1956. The Mexican soldiers have the same uniforms depicted in all these 3 movies.

I Seriously doubt that over 1500 Mexican Soldiers died in this battle. Depending on which Alamo author you care to believe, the Mexican Army attacked before dawn and was over the north wall in about a half an hour. Then it was primarily hand to hand fighting until all the defenders were dead. Very well done movie.

The 1960 John Wayne "The Alamo" will always be my favourite, even thought it came out 40 years before I was born. I haven't heard of this one and hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like they used the same set for the Alamo for this TV series. I don't know if this was supposed to be a reimagining of that film or a different script using the same set, just find it interesting as I never knew this version existed

Also, from what is available, in view of the fact that Mexico had banned slavery, the freedom and rights for which the people at the Alamo were fighting included the right to own other people and prevent them from having freedom. And the Mexicans were angry at the illegal immigrants coming into Mexico from the north and by keeping slaves, refusing to adapt to Mexican culture. How times have changed.

I am a 5th generation Texan, and i still like this movie a lot. This version is better than the one originally broadcast. There may not have been any slavery in Texas under Spanish and Mexican rule, but the poor Mexican peons wouldn't have known the difference. At least these Anglos set up a working constitutional government that paved the way for some sort of representational government. Men like Austin, Houston, Travis, Crockett, et al were giants--maybe buchaneers and pirates, too, ah, but what buchaneers and pirates! For further reading try the histories of the Alamo by Lon Tinkle (on which the screenplay was based) and John Myers Myers, as well as the latter's volume, THE DEATHS OF THE BRAVOS. Marquis James' excellent biography of Houston--THE RAVEN--is also of note.

@@fabiotabaton314 The Mexican anti-slavery laws were a joke, easily circumvented. That's why there's a Yellow Rose of Texas. Is a frontier society going to have that much use for slavery? Some folks may have been looking for land (as good as gold then). The folks at the Alamo may have died for the Mexican Constitution of 1824; they may simply have been sick of rule by a military dictator. Stephen Austin had been in favor of reconciliation, until he felt the iron fist of the dictator. Slavery was a factor, but a lot of people had a lot of reasons. To say that slavery was the only issue is good cocktail party history, but it's not a complete answer by itself.

the only serious error in this movie was the mexican army casualties. because of the conflicting reports, we will never know for certain how many died on either side, but the best estimate for the mexican army would be around 800 kia or died of wounds later, based on similar battles and the lack of a medical corps in the mexican army. in fact, santa ana had to hire a doctor for himself when he got sick on the way to san antonio. as to the details of the deaths of some of the men there, we may never know for sure what happened. like bowie, how he died depends on how sick he was at the end. if he was totally bedtidden, he was probably killed ion his bed. if he was able to move, he may have died similar to what was shown, as he was a fighter through and through. but is not likely we will ever know for sure. raul julia showed his greatness as an actor here, portraying santa ana as an equally brilliant leader and a madman in about equal measure, as he was in real life.

@@british.scorpion at the time of the seige, he did wear the coonskin cap sometimes, but he did not even start wearing one until he was in congress. there was a play parody of him with his character called nimrod rimfire, who wore a coonskin cap. crockett liked it and would wear one sometimes. one such time was during the final attack, as several mexican soldiers reported seeing a buckskin-clad man with such a hat.

The truth why the Mexican 🇲🇽 province of Texas was balkanized by US-American immigrants, was because the Mexican central government of General Santa Anna declared slavery illegal in Texas. (Santa Anna abhorred slavery, also the father of the country of Mexico, had abolished slavery since 1810). In addition, the Mexican law ordered to punish all those pioneers who did not free their slaves. This did not sit well with the US-American immigrants who wanted to keep slavery legal in Texas. That's why the Texas Civil War started. The Mexican soldiers who defended the territorial integrity of Mexico in the battle of the Alamo are actually the good guys in a story manipulated by official historiography. He played a British officer in the employee of Santa Anna. Back in those days people from all nations offered their services, either as officers or regular soldiers. For a lot of them, it paid the bills. Just look at our American Revolution, and the officer corps with Prussian and French (Lafayette, von Steuben just to name a few) leaders who offered their services to aid the colonists and fight the British.

Remember the Alamo was fought over the right to own slaves. Slavery had been abolished in Mexico and the Mexicans were restricting the immigration of settlers from the US who were bringing slaves with them. This movie is BS.

It was fought because of a tyrant trying to change what had been an agreement they came a long ways lots of brave men on both sides some Hispanics on both sides died slavery was a bad thing but those men in the allamo didn't they fought for their brothers

Slavery and serfdom were being cornered out in the rest of the Euro-American World during the late Eighteenth Century and early Nineteenth Century except in the United States, which in the events leading up to the Alamo had already fought one war with Spain in Florida to reclaim runaway slaves and expand its slave holding boundaries, and had made clear its imperialist intent in the Americas with the Monroe Doctrine. After winning the war that precipitated from the Alamo, the slavery expansionists would lose the only reasonable chunks of farmable (slave) land, California, Oregon, Nebraska and Bleeding Kansas to free statehood. During and after these losses the slave state governments grew more secessionist until they lost the Civil War. If you think this movie is factual, you do not understand history. You probably believe the John Wayne white western mythology.
