So... The song is “Music For Chameleons” by Gary Numan from the album “I, Assassin”, 1982... The magnificent fretless bass player is Pino Palladino... Also known for playing with Paul Young on “Every Time You Go Away” and with Tears for Fears on “Woman In Chains”

True story - I brought a girl home once after a night out, she had never seen the last episode in the series so I popped it on, we indeed got it on and 40 minutes later the DVD menu was there, Alan looping the shit out of my TV for hours on end playing the air bass and neither of us could be bothered turning it off.
