The Dreaming... Incredible album. This is easily my favorite Kate Bush release. But not only that, this is easily one of my favorite albums ever. I listen to The Dreaming all the time. and I`ve owned it since its release date in 1982 when I was the tender age of 12. These songs were magical to me then and now. I couldn`t imagine a world without this wonderful recording in it.

Yes, this was a good list. I grew up with 5 older sisters and I remember one sister had a grey vinyl version of The Kick Inside and that was the first music I really loved (I was 7 or 8) I don't remember Lionheart making any impression at all but I do remember listening to Never Forever a lot while checking the liner notes and working out what all the instruments were (Moog? Fairlight? What's that?) I bought the singles Suspended in Gaffa and Sat in your Lap from the discount bin with my pocket-money and later bought the cassette for The Dreaming. I was a bit shocked at first but intrigued as well. It was the album that taught me to really listen to music. So these three albums I associate with me growing up (musically) and I would also put them in that order.

Thanks Andy. Respect to your reasoning and choices. Kick Inside will always be my number one album from Kate and is permanently in my top 10 of all artists. I was very impressionable when I first heard the album, it was simply off the page.... I also had the pleasure to see her on stage twice on that original tour, front row at Birmingham Hippodrome, night 2 and that remains my favorite gig of all time. I was also at The Hammersmith Odeon for the gig that was recorded onto CD and videoed. In the Warm Room is the one song I would want her to sing to me one to one if the chance ever occurred.

I've been a fan of Kate since Wuthering Heights. I had chicken pox as a teen and Wuthering Heights was on heavy rotation on Radio 1 as I lay in bed trying not to scratch myself. It was just so different to everything else. A few years later me and my mates used to go to a pub on Sunday evenings that had a dj. He was open to us bringing some of our records in and he would play tracks from them for us, bands like Sabbath, Tull, Genesis etc. I took The Dreaming in just after its release and he said 'why have you brought that shit in?' I lost all respect for him at that moment. For years I think The Dreaming was misunderstood but I loved it from the moment I heard it.

Would love a Powell and Pressburger top ten, Andy! I’m a huge fan, too. ‘Aerial’ is a grower. For me, it’s more of a mood piece, best listened to all the way through. I’d definitely rank it higher than ‘Lionheart’. And I’d have ‘Hounds’ a bit higher, too. But I agree that The Sensual World is even better. Your numero uno is spot on, as far as I’m concerned. I love how she references films in her songs. “It’s in the trees; it’s coming!” (from the very scary ‘Night of the Demon’). Great vid, as always. Cheers.

Again I am reminded that I live under a rock as I have not heard of Kate Bush. Maybe when I go through her discography next week some of the songs will be familiar. Some albums that have stood out for me in the past few weeks are: Don Byron - Bug Music. I don't know how to describe this, "Big band/30's music with a twist"? It held my interest all the way through. Stewart Copeland - Rumble Fish(Original Soundtrack). I have not seen the movie and Spotify recommended this to me. All I can say is this is gold, I hear exploration/curiosity and optimism/happiness. I look forward to watching this movie because this will be the first time hearing a soundtrack first and having a concrete idea what the movie should be like. On the topic of movies, one of my favorite music based movies is "Sound of Noise(2010). Some "new" songs that stood out for me this past month have been. Abercrombie/Holland/DeJohnette - Back-Woods Song. GOLD Don Cherry - Lonely Woman. GOLD. I listened to this after the above song and they both struck similar nerves. These were on an ECM 70's playlist. Dewa Budjana - Swarna Jingga. I found this album "Naurora" because Dave Weckl is on here, but it also includes other giants. Mike Stern - Trip. For me Stern is hit or miss, but this song felt very fresh. 3lation - Frohn Jusciante 2: Electric Boogaloo - 800 Percent Quieter version. 2 of the Aristocrats are on here, Beller and Minneman. Todd Terje - Alfonso Muskedunder. I love the melody, it seems this song can read my mind, just when I start getting bored it changed. Adam Nitti - Antisocialmedia. The bass playing by Nitti is phenomenal

Great job attempting the impossible! I’ve been a fan since seeing the wuthering heights video on top of the pops and Hounds might have to be my #1 as I have at least 6 copies of it, loving the Fairlight and ninth wave (under ice on a good stereo is incredible). But Never Forever and Dreaming are right up there too. I always loved that fusion bit in Egypt! Aerial deserves a bit more love and I would have it above Lionheart just for such fine tracks as King of the mountain, pi, and how to be invisible.

The first three albums, if you reverse the order there you have 1-2-3.. i think never forever is the best one. Then the more experimental the dreaming as 4, then Hounds of love 5.. And i really like Aerial, its 6. Sensual world 7, then 50 words for snow 8.. i also like the red shoes the least. The production is interesting on Sensual world, but im a bit of a sound geek and it just sounds so flat. many many thanks to Kate Bush and the Bronte sisters!

Love Kate Bush. "Hounds of Love" was the album that got me back into progressive music (was listening to a lot of alternative stuff - Husker Du, Replacements, Minutemen, REM - when it was released). "The Ninth Wave" is one of my favorite pieces of music ever. I don't think she ever got a lot of airplay in the U.S., but some of the "Hounds" videos showed up on MTV. Agree that "The Dreaming" is one of the most daring albums ever released by a major artist.

Good list with excellent reasoning. However, I think The Red Shoes is very good, sharing much sound wise and in the writing with The Sensual World. Moments of Pleasure is one of her best songs with wonderfully evocative lyrics, and You're the One is one of the best break up songs ever written, with some stunning Jeff Beck guitar for good measure.

For me, Never For Ever has some superb tracks and a few misses in there too, but what it also has is great continuity. Everything just flows together so well and the whole can induce a peak musical experience for the astute listener. The whole is indeed greater than the sum. It's a bit like U2's The Unforgettable Fire in that regard, though the latter is (to me at least) more of an autumnal or winter experience, while Never For Ever is quite the opposite.

I only found this video by you and as a HUGE Kate fan since the early 80s I have to see it. Well, I agree with some things, but not with all. For example for me Sensual World was at that time as big as a disappointment as the Red Shoes (which is really bad, you are right). Sensual World has great lyrics, but the music imo is boring compared to the previous 3 albums. I really like Snow on the other hand - for me it's Astral Weeks with piano (but I know you hate that album :D). Hounds for me has to be on top because of the 9th Wave, which as you said is one of the greatest prog/art suite ever composed. And yes: Army Dreamers and Breathing are some of the best songs ever! So my list would be: Hounds - Dreaming (only second because of the 9th Wave) - Breathing - Kick - Lionheart - Aerial - Snow - Sensual - Shoes. BTW for me Get out of My House (one of my totally top fav songs when I was a teen and still think it's her best apart from Jig of Life) has several meanings. One of them is really very sexual and the house is her body. If you look at the lyrics it really could be.

Funny how these things work. I’ve always found The Sensual World one of her weaker albums. I don’t like the sound of it and I feel that most songs are mediocre. Lionheart by contrast I think is very underrated. I love it, the songs are wonderful and are beautifully sequenced from start to finish. Totally agree with you on The Dreaming. Remember when it came out and it blew me away and still does after 40 years.

When I first heard Aerial when it originally came out and she started singing about washing machines going wishy washy, I thought ok she's really lost it so maybe didn't give the album as mush playing time as I should. Then I saw her at Hammersmith a few years ago and she played A Sky of Honey, it was a revelation. Utterly amazing atmosphere, a masterpiece. Listening to the live version certainly brang it to life. The whole Before the Dawn album is fantastic. Can't agree with putting Hounds of Love at number 5, this isn't just the best Kate album, it's the best album of all time, definitely for me. Never Forever and The Dreaming are albums where Kate is experimenting and developing her skills in the studio to get her ideas out on to tape and the Hounds of Love is where she has perfected everything. I'd play Get Out of My House to people, they looked terrified and looked at me like I was mad listening to this music, always mad me laugh. The Red Shoes when it first came out sounded very strange, very boxy, something wrong with the EQ like it was mixed in a bad sounding room, I thought this was why she remastered/mixed the albums for the Directors Cut, definitely sounded better. Although not her greatest album but it has Moments of Pleasure which is easily up there with her best songs. Not sure why she rearranged it for the Directors Cut, took all that was magic about it out of it. Kate is one of the most important artists we have and certainly one of the most respected so thanks for keeping the light burning for Kate, let's just hope she's busy in her studio and suddenly emerges with new work soon.

The Red Shoes is great. I dont know why nobody likes it. Probably because its too pop but so what. She does a collaboration with lenny henry and prince on the same song! How random is that?. Bit cheesy maybe but its got great vocals from all, a great guitar part too. Rubberband girl is maybe my favourite video she ever did. A great song and her dancing in the video is sublime.
