After an asteroid impact, the Cosmic Expedition makes a forced landing on the habitable planet called B1156. They make contact and communicate with the intelligent beings there - alien creatures with fish-like appearances. The expedition discovers that the creatures' culture and language are very different from that of humans, and through their efforts to understand and communicate, basic interactions and trust are established. Eventually, the expedition was recognized as gods by the alien creatures, and their arrival and departure left a profound impact on the minds of the locals, becoming part of history and religious lore.
