The All New Bug Out Bushcraft Camping Bicycle

Five years ago I built a three wheeled bicycle for wilderness use. It was a three wheel inline bike that held a duffel bag or backpack for bugging out, camping, survival or bushcraft without the need for gas. The only issue was it didnt steer very well. I modified the set up and still kept the qualities I wanted. Large wheels and a height for ground clearance and a narrow wheel base so I could fit through trees and the forest without having to stick to established trails.

I lived in Africa, and bicycles are basically used like a pickup truck. People will build huge frames on the back out of rebar, or sticks, and use it to haul just about anything, loads of firewood, building materials, farm animals, multiple people, and a lot more. I rode out about 20 miles into the jungle once with a local to harvest bamboo. We rode our bikes out loaded up the bamboo on our bikes an walked it back.

Brilliant! A car will make a recognizable noises. People will come looking-maybe you have something they want. Even if you have a roof mounted MG-once the shooting starts, you have lost. People will get even more interested. This bike makes nearly no noise at all and can not be attributed to a source of other peoples resources. Glad to see you improving the bike setup. On or off trail it gives you lots of options. The pivot system is as ingenious as it is simple. The tool bag is a great addition. The weight of the tools helps offset the high center of gravity of the trailer with the duffle attached. You could easily add an axe if needed. Great job overall. Great mod on your original design sir. Liking the 2 wheel design. A tweak I'd suggest is when you disconnect the trailer from the bike , if you could design a pair of handles to attach to the hitch points to produce a wheel barrel for collecting fire wood or supplies when you are at camp. The duo-wheels are a better way to go. Once you get down how to ride with it loaded you can go anyplace. Your in the woods just make a kickstand from a branch or add one on each side. Nice to have you and Nick together. You two make an awesome team. Peace, Love and Freedom 🇺🇲

Good concept Dave! I'm a bikepacker and my alternative B-O-B setup is my bike along with a garden cart. The cart has tall wheels, is about 2 feet wide and can hold several hundred pounds. It also keeps the bike standing. It is attached to the rear of my pannier rack with rope and a carabiner. Using the bike standing, I can throw a tarp over it for quick shelter. I do like the pivoting swivel point you made Dave!

I have a recollection of WWI pictures of troops walking alongside a sort of bicycle to carry a load of cargo--the inline wheels made it more maneuverable and no lifting of the handles like a wheelbarrow. It seemed to be a modified bike with no crank, and they had canvas bags covering the "triangle" for the cargo on both sides, so the load was relatively low for stability. Fat tires of course.

I can envision this "trailer" performing double duty around our Philippine subdivision. When not out in the thick stuff, this baby could haul a few groceries or bring back the limb wood we collect for the BBQ pit and our favorite twig stoves and small gasifier stove. Beautiful workmanship man.

One of my big issues with bike camping or any type of camp really is having to exist at ground level. Why not use the bicycle and or trailer to convert into a cooking surface or tables. I found some aluminum corrugations much like a card board design which would detach and attach to form an elevated surface to create a galley. While you are at it, having two large masses perhaps forming a series of arches with fiberglass rods to support a tarp. Something quick to set up in case of a sudden shower or other need such as sun protection as well as keeping the bike, trailer and other equipment dry. As a person who has thought about extensively at what your are doing, i am impressed. I which I had your machinist and mechanical skills as well. Congratulations on fantastic solutions. Your idea on keeping the trailer load elevated for water crossings is a very valid point. It is obvious you began with certain design requirements born from many many hours in the woods. Getting ready to ride the Divide or the Appalachian Trail? Glad to have met you both even if it is just in this manner. You both would be welcome at my campfire.

Hi, your trailer is awesome. I see you put a lot lot of work in the hinge and mounting of the trailer. It is easy to take off and maneuver is very impressive. I have a suggestion. You are hauling this trailer into your camp. It should become a functional part of your camp. I can see it becoming a table or stool in a matter minute. You also need a bottle holder on the bike lol. I think Dave should mark down all of the specks, and support with photos, and date it, state that it was all his original invention, and put it all in a sealed envelope and mail it to himself where it would get a post date, and put it somewhere safe when he gets it back, and never open it until he needs to. This is how a person can do an intent to copywrite to protect his idea, because if it is never opened, and has the postal date on it, it holds up in court over any intellectual property proceeding! He could even send out a few to himself. Also he could do same with modifications, and other versions he could think up! Everyone would want one of these!

But he also said he didn't make these things to make money, he did it just for the joy of doing it and share it with us to encourage us to make our own stuff. And I have. Some failed but some I use. Like Dave says " they ain't gonna win no beauty contest" lol but they work. Dave has some really cool tools for fabrication that we don't have but, you can do alot with good hand tools if your willing to put the time into it. One of my favorite was a block of some material with holes in it like a bearing block he hung around his neck and used his body weight against a tree to do a bow drill. FRIGGIN' AWSOME!! it's harder for us older guys to get on the ground and bend over to do a bit drill so I loved the idea. The three generations of t he tree grill , I can go on and on. It's suppost to be " fun in the woods" Dave makes it fun.

Now that’s a trail bike. The camo really helped hide that in the shots. Is there a weight limit you won’t go past on pulling? I ask, because once camp is set. That pivot hitch looks like an eye bolt with the pivot(?) ball? It is a fun video! Dave is a master tinkerer. Can’t help himself. I’ve read that back in olden days there were traveling tinkers who would sharpen scissors, knives and made knives. And repaired pots and pans. Nick's comment on the rescue plane cracked me up :) And Dave handled it, like well Dave. I can imagine a scenario where Nick asks "Dad, where are we exactly?" And Dave say's Georgia... somewhere. I've done a bit of bikepacking / stealth camping myself, but with panniers on a rear rack and a handlebar bag, and I have looked at bike trailers for extending my range and increasing my loadout, but none of them are as good as the one you built! I like the fact that it is narrow as well as high off the ground. I reckon you could put pannier bags or any type of slim bags on the sides too although I don't know how hard that would be to tow. If I had a welding rig and space to work I'd make one like this myself although it probably wouldn't be as good.

I remember when you first built this bug out bike as I was really interested because I'd often thought of using one of my bike's for this very purpose. I'm a keen cyclist and have just bought a gravel bike with loads of braze on's for all sorts of bags fitted to the frame. I noticed how you were doing that as well on your updated model. The trailer looked excellent and once you lower those gears a bit, you'll be able to go anywhere off road... providing you have the energy, of course 😄. Great to see the bike out again with its new trailer.... enjoyed this video very much.... thanks again, both of you 👍

G'day mate & Nick.! You guys are just loaded with wonderful ideas that we're surprise that you're not millionaires.!! A few years ago we purchased a couple of battery operated tri-cycle. Some local business use it for pizza delivery. Got a similar setup as yours but we never thought of the shovel & saw, what a jolly good idea. Reckon you are Mr. Tesla in bushcraft.! We gave it a field test for 3 days & it served us well & because it's battery operated, it is very stealthy. We did mod the bike with thicker tyres, much better for using it in the woods & sandy area. The rear tyres are wider apart for stability especially when turning. Of course we did not forget the bicycle pump & puncture kit with spare tubes. All that is needed now is attaching some sort of solar power to charge the battery while we ride. Thought we leave that to your genius mind. We'll be waiting...! A challenge if you wish to accept it. As always a great show. Stay safe mate. Hi Nick..!!

Fantastic job!! Well Done. It is great to have the trailer load high enough to agvoid getting wet during most water crossings, but lowering the center of gravity on the trailer will help in the trailer"s stability while crossing rough terrain. JMO: From a sailors prospective.
